Why don't translators just use "H" instead of "ecchi"? Isn't it the same thing considering japanese are literally pronouncing "H", even using katakana to spell it out. And "H" is short for "H"entai which I'm sure anyone should know if they've involved themselves with this media long enough.
>>
>>133911173
I get what you're saying but the Japanese usually write it out as エッチ instead of just "H". Might as well transliterate it the same way they write it.

Also, I'm still at a point where I sometimes can't follow the conversation 100%. I ran into one part today where I'm still not even sure how the conversation went where it did. Admittedly, I'd been reading for hours, and was getting kinda tired.

Basically, if I'm really looking forward to something, I don't want to spend the entire time looking up words, and I don't want it dotted with issues like that. Especially since most of them are going to be more plot-driven than moege, and failing to understand one back and forth exchange could have bigger consequences than just missing a joke.

After a certain point it becomes impossible to be satisfied with just porn and games. Every bit of Japanese you don't understand will be a prickling thorn of irritation, glaring evidence of your own inadequacy. In order to learn enough Japanese to understand porn, you must first allow yourself to be engulfed in the language, what was first merely a means to an end becomes the end itself, having stared upon the abyss of language it will be inevitable that you are consumed by it yourself. There is no finding satisfaction in imperfection and inadequacy. There is only a drive for improvement within the language.

>>
>>133914422
Eh. The kanken tests stuff you never see outside of it so it is not really something that will drive you to improve. For example, 2ch and the newspaper and whatnot just has normal Japanese, so there's a drive to learn it, to know Japanese. There is no drive to learn obscure, unused kanji in the kanken, just as there is no real drive to learn obscure English words that one never sees.

I remember some dumb feminist landwhale trying to claim that it was sexist to learn a language in order to stand a better chance at fucking their women.

Her reasoning, when confronted about being so hateful towards men and male sexuality that she has a problem with men even doing so much as seeking out ideal partners? According to her, "learning the language so that you can actually communicate with them" is the same as "feeling that they have an obligation to fuck you". Also, she assumed that he was unattractive, and that the only thing that he should be working on is the gym (yeah, don't bother learning her language, just take your pants off and hope that she gets the message; that'll go over well).

She was extremely stubborn about this, too, even when I pointed out that the poster that she was responding to initially said nothing to indicate that he felt that he was entitled to Japanese pussy regardless of their opinions, and only said that he was learning Japanese because he wanted to fuck them, which is a rational course of action if you're looking for consensual sex.

Goddamn, I hate feminists. "I don't hate men, or treat men like rapists by default" my ass.

Dragons Crown was raw fantasy.
Ys 1&2 Chronicles / Memories of Celceta- enough said
FFXIV may as well be a WRPG
Does Monster Hunter/Soul Sacrifice count?
Crimson Shroud was an okay E-shop game
Fate/Extra boyyeee
Persona 4 Golden didn't have much chuuni
Nippon Ichi games: Legasista, Disgaea 5, etc

Of course is this also overlooking the fact that the most "real" JRPGs are on snes, and most of those are just standard brown-haired nameless protags trecking through a dragon quest-esque world (link lufia 2) so I don't know why the limit of past 3 years was desired.
>>
>>133916205
It's to prove that the genre is fucking dead
>>
>>133916226
If we look at it from Mr Pedantic's viewpoint, I imagine a ~JRPG~ has to be turn based for whatever the fuck reason, so yeah of course it's dead, turn based is archaic as absolute shit and not nearly as enjoyable as any real time system. No argument here. Only thing I disagree with is the absolutely unfounded, absolutely stupid viewpoint that JRPGs are all anime pretty boys that are vampire chuuni edgelords with 10000,0000 chakras or whatever. It's /v/-tier bias with very little basis in any actual games. If you actually play JRPGs you'll find most protagonists to be just normal RPG dudes. Like Chronos from Chono Trigger, the Firion from FF2, etc etc.
>>
>>133916292
No one ever said anything about being turn based, Bloodborne (and souls series) is even more of a WRPG than FFXIV, which you said yourself it might as well be a WRPG.
>>
>>133916411
I won't push the subject, he was the one who brought up the pedantic argument of JRPG vs WRPG. For me, if it's an RPG made in Japanese that's enough for it to be a JRPG. Going any deeper than that starts to violate intersubjectivity and leads it into a pedantic argument with no real value. I only said FFXIV may as well be a WRPG because the character designs were very western, nothing to do with gameplay.
>>
>>133916484
Characters looking western or eastern is just as subjective as gameplay or world style being western or eastern

The distinction between WRPG and JRPG was first made when the west was heavily influenced by DnD, leading to games like Wizardy, while Japan was heavily influenced by Dragon Quest (itself a derivative of wizardy). At this point the terms no longer hold much meaning because clearly 3d action games are not like dnd or DQ at all.

Anki is designed to remind the user of facts just before they slip out of memory so it is kind of a strain to only use Anki to keep them fresh in your memory. Skipping reviews in Anki is like letting things slip out of memory and failing to find -in the context of vocabulary- the facts in their natural context frequently enough is like pushing that "reviewing just prior to forgetting" further on the knife edge of memory.

>>133919377

I've known some very nice Muslims.

These people create a trap that's easy to fall into if you don't know a lot about the world at large, aren't very bright, and have been taught that you're supposed to be blindly tolerant towards certain things and are looking to have this belief validated: Meeting nice Muslims acts as proof to them that Islam isn't inherently bad, and that the people who reject Islam are simply blinded by hate. What they fail to realize is that their favorite bit of reasoning doesn't only apply when it leads to acceptance. This small handful of people does not represent the oppressive reality brought about by the teachings of Islam across the world, where drawings are banned, most music is banned, women wear burkas and aren't allowed to be educated, people who abandon Islam are executed, women are punished for being raped, non-Muslims pay a non-Muslim tax, and gays are executed, all of this enforced by sharia law. Rather, these American Muslims represent a comparatively tiny group of outlier Muslims in a group of countries where Islam doesn't hold any real power... yet. If we let this growth fester, I can guarantee you that most of its non-Muslim defenders will not like the effect that it has on the western world.
>>
>>133920262

>American Muslims

Meant to correct this to western Muslims in general, thus the odd wording.

I think the important thing to note is that Islam is, by its very teachings and essence, a religion of hate, destruction, discrimination and violence. It may be true that many peaceful and kind Muslims exist, but that's because they choose to ignore or willfully misinterpret the teachings of Islam which contradict their own conscience, not because Islam itself is a religion of peace. Therefore it's perfectly valid to criticise Muslims as a whole, and dispense with the "but there are plenty of nice ones" crap.

>That's the fault of Norman snowniggers I think.
I was right. Turns out it's also the fault of Norwegian and Danish snowniggers.

>In the period from the 8th to the 12th century, Old English gradually transformed through language contact into Middle English.
>First, the waves of Norse colonisation of northern parts of the British Isles in the 8th and 9th centuries put Old English into intense contact with Old Norse, a North Germanic language. Norse influence was strongest in the Northeastern varieties of Old English spoken in the Danelaw area around York, which was the centre of Norse colonisation; today these features are still particularly present in Scots and Northern English.
>With the Norman conquest of England in 1066, the now norsified Old English language was subject to contact with the Old Norman language, a Romance language closely related to Modern French. The Norman language in England eventually developed into Anglo-Norman. Because Norman was spoken primarily by the elites and nobles, while the lower classes continued speaking Anglo-Saxon, the influence of Norman consisted of introducing a wide range of loanwords related to politics, legislation and prestigious social domains. Middle English also simplified the inflectional system. The distinction between nominative and accusative case was lost except in personal pronouns, the instrumental case was dropped, and the use of the genitive case was limited to describing possession. The inflectional system regularised many irregular inflectional forms, and gradually simplified the system of agreement, making word order less flexible.

There is much less compelling content produced anywhere outside the Anglosphere and Japan.

Part of this is due to simple economics. Japan and America are among the largest economies in terms of dollars, among the largest nations in terms of people, and among the richest nations in terms of median disposable income.

You've got to be pretty inept to go to a school that isn't offering the classes you want in the first place.

I'm about two weeks in. Usually I have about this many reviews but it takes me twice as long.

For some reason I struggled really hard with core2k at first, I shut off new cards for like four days because I was still fucking up the same 10.

But it sort of came together conceptually somehow and I'm having a way easier time committing new Kanji to memory now.

No, he's right. The job market for new grads is still turbofucked, especially in some fields (and no I don't mean women's studies and philosophy).

Even STEM grads need to have a relevant internship to get anything right now. If you've got no relevant work history, the degree is worthless. If you've got work history, the degree is worthless.

It's weird, college is basically just a necessary avenue to get a good internship for two years.
>>
>>133927506
I checked the few credible local schools, I'm planning on taking ODE's, Discrete math and introductory analysis but they're all offered on weird campuses and impossible to get to without a car. So I stuck with one of those and am filling up my schedule with shit like microcontrollers and a physics class.
>>
>>133927991
That's not going to last so enjoy it. Don't go trigger happy though because what may be fun and easy today can be very different down the road. You said you stopped adding new cards because you got stuck on 10? Imagine when it happens to 50 or even a hundred and suddenly you can't even finish your reviews never mind new cards. Don't deviate too much or too often from your normal pace.
You're not going to listen. I know because I've been there.

Japanese: ~50,000 readers
French: ~28,000
German: ~16,000
Italian: ~3.5k
Spanish: 18,000~

Let's play this your way then

>Curious that there are no language learning generals for European languages on here,

Because this site is an accurate representation. Absolutely. Go find statistics on most popular languages that people are learning,. Japanese is way, way WAY down there.

Saying French only has "one great movie or book once in a while" is not only absolute bullshit, but even if that were to be true, that's still one more "great movie or book" than Japanese will pump out within the same time frame.

From there try changing the parameters a bit until you get it.

>Please, do demonstrate this "constant stream of compelling Japanese content spanning a huge variety of mediums" that justifies spending 4/5x longer on the language than a European one.
VNs (very few of which get TLs), manga (for which scanlations are sporadic and unreliable), anime, LNs, movies, books, porn, porn games, etc.

Are you really going to try to argue that a European country has anywhere near the diversity of media being released on a regular basis?

I think Australia is the only place where learning Japanese could be even somewhat relevant, but they already speak English, so naturally they don't give a damn about foreign languages and can't be bothered to learn any.

Not to mention, those Reddit numbers are inflated. That website's got a fuck ton of half retarded weeaboos, more than 4chan I'd bet, who want to learn Japanese so that they can "look cool" in front of there friends.

You might see a slightly similar effect going on with girls romanticizing French or some stupid shit like that, but needless to say, the amount of dedicated French learners you'd see there would well outnumber the dedicated Japanese learners.

Because it was spelled before the pronunciation changed.

We keep the old spelling because people in old dialects still spell it like that.

Ever learned an indo-european language outside of europe? They do the same shit, except the spelling convolution goes all the way back to their ancestor languages. In return they can communicate in writing even if they don't understand eachother. It's just like chinese.

Syllabery are the same. It's just that all the languages that people care about that use syllaberies (cherokee, japanese, etc) devised their current orthography at a time when pronunciation was still similar to today.

As much as I don't like that guy, and as stupid as he might be in some regards, he's probably right about reddit statistics not being very reliable here.

Reasoning? Nerds are probably more likely to try to learn things on their own, especially for free off of the internet, while the only thought that will go through the minds of normies in regards to language learning is "take a class!" On the off chance that they do take initiative, they'll remember commercials, and go buy Rosetta Stone and/or Pimsleur.

If your only motivation is looking for a job, you're probably looking at Chinese, German, or Spanish. If you're a normie English-speaker who's thoughtlessly looking to have a language under his belt "because it might help you someday", you probably choose French or Spanish.

People are surprised when they hear that you're learning Japanese. Why? Because it's not a common choice.

Nope.

I don't believe that there's an invalid reason to learn a foreign language, so long as you have an actual concrete goal. Having fun is a valid reason to learn a foreign language. He has a strong air about him of being one of those.

Also, the assumptions that he makes about people who belong to the anime fandom betrays how stupid he actually is. Calling someone a manchild based on hobbies alone is the realm of insecure nerds and extremely immature dudebros and cunts who haven't had the life experiences to make them realize what qualities actually matter.

You've just described about 80% of the population.
>>
Arguing baits people into correcting you. When this is off-topic, it's actively destructive. When it's on-topic, it rewards people for shitposting in order to get help. Someone has to step in and correct the crap, which justifies the shitflinging.

Always respond to the original post that's asking for help. Do not respond to shitposters or arguments between what look like members of Mount Stupid. Respond to the original post and move on. Don't fall for people doing the debian forum trick.
>>
>>133936036

Go outside before making assumptions about 80% of the population. I can tell you from experience most people don't care, and that it doesn't act as any sort of hindrance to making friends whatsoever.

If they dislike you, it's because your behavior makes you annoying or uncomfortable to be around, not because of what you do in your free time.

For example, rambling on non-stop about shows that they haven't seen and VNs that they haven't read is obnoxious behavior. It's not the fact that you watch anime that puts them off, it's the fact that you can't shut up about it. Talk about something that they can have a conversation with you about instead, and save the anime talk for other fans.

It's all about having basic social grace and having your shit together in ways that actually matter, i.e. being employed (more professional is better), being educated, taking care of yourself, and doing things with your life.

Anon A does 10 new cards in anki a day, not much else - takes about 20 minutes. Anon B does 30 new cards in anki a day and reads for 5 hours - overall, 6 hours of studying a day.
After 1 year, Anon A knows 3,650 words but can't read and is bad at the language. Is a virgin. Anon B knows 11,000 words and is a very competent reader. Has fucked several Japanese women.
