You know, assuming they are nearly the same weight, the shorter fighter should have the advantage. Being a taller fighter means you usually work when people are far away from you, and shorter means you usually work close. In this case, with no pounds to the head, the taller fighter is going to have a harder time keeping the shorter fighter off them, where as the shorter fighter can easily sneak in and practice the short hand punches they usually practice.
In short, reach isn't always better. It's more a test of skill to see if you really know how to dodge and block properly at this point.

As for not getting it as a sport, I guess it's just a case of different strokes for different folks. As a martial artist myself I love seeing what strategies and techniques are employed in a situation close to live combat, but with enough rules and regulations in place to keep it from getting TOO dangerous. There's still danger, but for many people that's part of the spectacle. Seeing someone lay it all on the line in front of thousands, if not millions. It's why fighters like Diego Sanchez are so beloved, not necessarily for good technique or amazing gameplanning, but for the sheer amount of tenacity the dude has.

Combat sports are always kind of niche, especially these days as even Boxing is on the decline. But there will always be people who are enamored by the idea of people of turning the violence of fistfighting into an art form with real, demonstrable efficacy. And there will always be like twice as many that just enjoy watching people throw down.

Natsuo goes through a lot of develoment in the short run of teppu. She starts of bored and miserable. and ends the siries happy and engaged.

The manga was never about fucking dealing with natsuo's nasty personality (at least not yet. This is probably something that will if the writer gets well.)

It was about overcoming boredom and the depression born from it. There is no doubt natsuo does that, and by all standars it makes it pretty good writing, and her character is so fleshed out and easy to relate for people who have dealt with that, that it also makes her a fucking amazing character. A character like that does not come often.

And the craziest part of it all is that Lawler vs. MacDonald II at 189 was an even bloodier back-and-forth war. Imagine that, but with both people beating eachother up for the better part of 25 minutes.
