I don't recall any special dynamic apart from "she's my kouhai so I got to protect her", I saw more chemistry in the Centarumon episode than the entire Puppetmon-Piedmon arc. The fact that both Izzy and Mimi are the same grade helps that chemistry, and not only on a romantic level.

Judging only by the original series perhaps, but I think that gap in the current day is not so far that it can't be bridged. It's too wide to hope for spontaneous reaction though, there'd have to be some sort of constant proximity. In any case, if they were to go that route, I think that the current versions of themselves would have a better shot at being able to manage that. For example, Matt is still a bit cold, but he thinks enough about others not to press the issue when they say they have other plans than to come to his gig, which he really wanted them to be at.
