Good example. The LotR movies actually do a lot to cut out flesh and "focus" the plot and themes more. Writing that's all over the place can sometimes get condensed well in an adaption.

And the fact of the matter is that, the visual and audio elements add another layer to the work that's missing from a VN. Most people just aren't as entertained by reading alone.

I'm not saying adaptations are bad just that the original story tends to be more elaborate and constructed, so if you're interested in the story then it's better, but adaptations are cool too, it's nice to see stuff move around, have voices and stuff

That applies more to webnovels, there are actual light novel writers who write decent stuff but yeah there's a lot of pretty low brow lns too. I mostly just read nisio novels to be honest and to be fair those have some cringe stuff too but the stories and characters are pretty interesting.

Most LNs are really not hugely different because it's a "light" format itself. You might lose some character thoughts or clever wordplay if they aren't directed Haruhi or Monogatari autism tier but it's easy to keep most things in at the typical pace.

On the other hand there are some really rushed LN adaptions and most major VNs have a massive volume of text, so you can lose even fairly basic stuff about the scenario and character motivations as they skim through the plot in full advertising mode, depending on the skill of the director and writer..
