Setting is indeed shitty. The backgrounds are ranging from nonexistent to just boring beyond belief. That's far from the main problem though. Everything is shit. Dialogue is shit, acting is shit, fights are shit, CG is shit, the Horror stories are shit, and the characters are shit.

I'm really disappointed the most about the Horror stories in particular. I really enjoyed those in the previous one.

The statement from Maruyama on the site implies they weren't even told what the new series was about until after HnK finished. Aikawa said on twitter that originally he and Inoue were supposed to write the whole series by themselves, but do to time constraints had to scrounge up every writer they could find available, etc. They also got Katsura pushed on them even though his designs would be hard to do even for a big production.

It wasn't but it at least had a few cool fights by that point to keep some interest. The only thing I see in Guren no Tsuki's fights is that they usually end in 1-2 slashes by Garo with some sub-par to ok 2-d fighting before the armor's summoned.

The armor fights used to be a highlight, but now it's just a signal that the fight's coming to a close.
