The other half of the story is that the US and Europe have large green areas and deforestation control that counters most of their CO2 emissions.

Rikaisama Anki import is broken for me. Nothing is popping up on Anki when I press the import button and I only hear the audio play when I press the import button. Everything is updated, restarted both Anki and Firefox, and still won't work. Anyone having the same issue?

What is "なによ"?

I swear to god I google so many questions so many times and can rarely find any answers without just directly asking /djt/, even for questions that I find have a non-technical answer or is just basic grammar, or phrase, or word. Googling phrases listed in the guide doesn't help, nor does trying 20 different english expressions. I also rarely find any answers in the DOJG or other grammar websites. Am I doing something wrong with how I'm searching for answers? I hate relying on and bugging /djt/ with shitty questions but I can't seem to fucking find any answers by myself

Because their capita is very low. I'm gonna pull some numbers out of my ass to demonstrate.

Say the US has 1 million citizens, and the UAE has 10.
US has a per capita emission of 0.5, so their overall emission is 500,000.
The UAE has a per capita emission of 100, so their total emission is 10,000.

So even though each UAE citizen is causing 200 times emission than each US citizen, their overall is emission is 50 times lower.

It's more like the opposite if you listened to Part 1. Originally we were supposed to meet up and just have some fun and then just be long-time penpals after that. She said she could handle it even if she fell in love but nah, she fell in love completely. I was okay with just staying friends just as we first agreed on so I said maybe we should continue talking, but as friends, but she ended up going crazy just by me suggesting it. I guess it's a common reaction for people that've never been with someone that treats you well. They end up thinking "he's the only one" or "she's the only one" as a result. Not a very good mindset to have.

Likewise, it's just motivating to be able to look at sentences and actually be able to figure out what is written when mere months ago my brain would just automatically assume it was completely incomprehensible and skip past it.

Added stuff fairly sparingly, focusing on things that I knew I had looked up multiple times before but was still not remembering. Pretty much.
I had watched anime intensively for a couple years before I started reading. Was able to watch the easiest of anime raw at about the time I started reading.

That said, I'm not sure my method was optimal. The DJT prescription of starting out with Anki is probably not a bad one.
The bigger problem is when/if you stop using it or limit your use of it.

It's hard to say how word learning is best done. It's a complicated process. There's research that points to the fact that many important words and expressions are too rarely used to be learned efficiently from repeated exposure by reading.

Read a shitload and was very disciplined in my reading. Had an iron rule the first couple of years of learning: "at least one hour reading a day". Also did RTK which enabled me to jump straight into the meat of it all.

10k hat a lot of the JLPT N1 words, so that's definitely going to help. Never used JGTMW, but I bought all 3 volumes of DOJG and 日本語文型辞典, all of which are useful to look stuff up.
I never read them from end to end or did any other form of organized study with them though.

For the JLPT, I used the Shin Kanzen Master books.

I bought all the N2 ones then realized that I already knew all the vocab from the core decks and that listening is so easy since I've been listening to seiyuu-radio-shows for ages, so I only got the reading and grammar ones for N1.

If your goal is the JLPT specifically, getting some of those mock tests won't hurt either.

>>133889145
1. Read Tae Kim while you do the Core deck. It shouldn't take you more than a month.
2. Once you've got a vocubulary base of about 2k words, it's time to start reading. Go with easy manga with furigana like Yotsubato or Ika Musume. Finish Core6k.
3. Start a mining deck. Add any unknown word you find to a text file and import them with Epwing2Anki, or just add it with Rikaisama's Realtime Import feature.
3. Once you get a feel for basic Japanese grammar, start reading moege with text hookers (Chiitrans Lite recommended). The typical recommendation around here is Hanahira then Flyable Heart.

If you want to go through the DOJG, there are two approaches and you can (and should) do both. These approaches are:
1. Download the grammar reference in the OP that has the example sentences, formation tables and volume/page reference so you can read the notes. You can look up any unknown grammar point easily with it.
2. Download the DOJG Anki deck:
https://mega.nz/#F!HlFTiCxI!I3_D5C9_NyysiMHOfr0pkw
Go through it slowly and read the notes carefully. It'll make your reading skills skyrocket.

This is only for reading but what you need at the start is a great amount of comprehensive input before you even think of producing or else you'll just make wrong sentences.

Now for other skills, you can:
Listening: Use JLPT study material for a systematic approach. There's also JapanesePod101 (most audio files are in the CoR). Once you can listen well enough, you switch to news, TV shows or anime.
Writing: Use lang8 or Hellotalk. Preferably lang8 because they actually bother correcting you.
Speaking: Search for a Skype language partner in the lang8 forums.

>Rikiasama lists "let's do (something)" as a definition for じゃないか.

It also lists "Isn't it" at a definiton, which makes a whole lot more sense in that context.

Anyway, this is already a whole lot easier with context. Take a look at that image.
You can see that there's an illustration of a character there, this illustration is a 描き下ろし, a commissioned drawing or a drawing which has been made for a specific purpose. It's a poster, with a drawing on it. It doesn't become very much more specific-purpose oriented than that.

じゃないか (isn't it) is a rhetorical question. This rhetorical question is a result of the speaker seeing the drawing and noting that it is a 描き下ろし. It's just a statement formulated as a rhetorical question, Japanese does this a lot.

Is there any other reason why this is a bad idea?

I'm eligible for a prize since my work got the highest grade achievable. While plagiarism checks have been completed long before the mark was set, I'd rather not jeopardize anything by publishing my work online.

Though if you send me an email I'll ask my advisor whether it's fine to share it with individual people.

My email address can be found at the bottom of the guide.

I'm not anon.

Aside from which, they don't just google a few sentences to check up on this stuff. They have a whole database with which they cross-check these papers for plagiarism.

Feel free to find something which discusses the loss of information from Japanese to English on a lexical and grammatical level. I didn't find anything when I looked.

Importing Anki cards with rikaisama is a a fucking mess. Fuck all that recommend it.

Would " 私は各人が好きだ" be right?

Works pretty well for me. Maybe the people who recommended it to you had it working pretty well for them too and thought you would also benefit from it. I don't think it's very nice to tell them to go fuck themselves like that just because something went wrong for you. They were trying to help you without asking for anything in return. Your review count should theoretically increase indefinitely, only getting slower and slower as more time passes, but never hitting a limit.

You shouldn't get above around 300-350 reviews daily in a 6000 card deck with 20 cards per day, though.
>>

It gets less painful as you go along. The only rule to me is to keep anki time under an hour. I don't believe the few extra cards are worth the substantially greater mental/emotional toll of going past what you can actually handle. You just improve what you can do a little bit each session. I say that as an amphetaNEET.

>>
>>133895377
No, it should hit a steady state, and if you stop adding new cards it'll decay to zero.

This is because every time you get a card, it goes away for twice the time it did last time.

The sum of 1 + 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/16 .... converges to 2, so adding a card that you'll never get wrong adds a finite load that you'll eventually spend.

The obvious proof of this is that eventually you'll get the card to, say, fifty years, and be dead before it next comes up for review.

Actually it corresponds to newcardsdaily * floor(log(time since starting) / log(ease))

Where ease is the number that the interval is multiplied by when you get cards right.

Here's proof: http://pastebin.com/YwsCF5PG

Set retention to 1.0, newcardsdaily to 1, configure numcards and days to limit how far it gets (numcards being too high will stop on "days", days being too high will stop when "numcards" cards have been added)

I like to read VNs by lying on my bed, my back supported with pillows and my laptop propped on my stomach, I find it the most comfortable and relaxing thing ever.

However I have problems when I reach sex scenes, since obviously my laptop gets in the way if I try to masturbate in this posture. I've tried but I can't find any way to lie down on my bed and still be able to comfortably both masturbate and read my laptop screen, so I usually have to head back to my desk for the scene, which is a huge inconvenience. If someone could offer a solution to this problem it would be great.

You know, while I don't think that a serious learner will fall into the traps, I can definitely see how a text parser could fuck over someone's learning.

If you look at the text parser before the game text, the incorrect shit that it throws at you can be kinda disorienting, and make things a lot harder than they need to be. If you didn't make a deliberate effort to always read off of the game screen before clicking, droning through with sort of a half-understanding of what's going on would be very easy.

声をかける
>>
>>133901622
声かける is the verb, it roughly means to raise your voice, but not in the sense that you're yelling.

It's in ~てくる + past form, てきた
Then add んだ and し (they're separate grammar points).

See if you can figure it out now.
>>
>>133901622
声かけ is to say something, yes from 掛ける. きた in this case could mean 'finally', but I probably wouldn't put that in the translation. The young child finally uttered something, or however you want to say it

>>

A very shitty version of anki with a shinny interface.
>>
>>133902150
Memrise is pretty crap, I really wish it was better because when I used it the point system and so on was more motivating and less dull than anki, however it has a lot of flaws. You have to pay to use certain courses, you can't really add your own words, each language has one central database that you pull words from, and Japanese is divided into stupid sub-categories for things like only kanji (think RTK)... Basically it's a big clusterfuck, and things I complained about in pre-beta were never fixed (it uses a Chinese font for Japanese text by default for example).

That's just because all the uses of 掛ける don't translate well into a single word in english. In very general terms, 掛ける means to 'apply' something, or to 'put into use'. So to 掛ける your voice means to say something

I'm starting to dislike a trend that's become common for DJT users to follow - the trend of urging people to learn Japanese at the drop of a hat, the trend of mocking those who choose not to, and above all else, the trend of underselling the difficulty and time investment involved in learning a language, especially Japanese. I have come to the conclusion, that Japanese is hard enough, and enough of a time sink, that it is unreasonable to expect the average dude to learn it. For context, this is in direct response to all of those who go around on /v/ and mock, say, vita fans for not learning Japanese for jrpgs, or go to /vn/ or h-game general and mock those people for not learning Japanese, for those of you who go around talking about how easy and simple Japanese is and how everyone should learn it.

I've been studying Japanese for close to two years. I've studied hours each day, I've read close to 30 full books in Japanese, I've listened to numerous hours of audio, I've really put my all into this. And I've had a lot of success - I can read books without much stress, I can follow along with Card Captor Sakura, I can scrape my way through porn games without a texthooker. But, you know what? I can't read a newspaper, I can't follow a news discussion for too long, and I went to the 社会 section of 2chan and was abso-fucking-lutely lost on a lot of the posts. I've still got a lot to go. And I'm TWO years, in with hourly study, heck some days I read for 10+ hours. I've put a lot of time, I lot of emotional investment, even, all into Japanese.

In short- Japanese is a FUCK huge time investment and a LOT of work (note to finnie: learn kanji before replying). I don't think the average person, the dude on /m/ who just likes super sentai shows... the dude on /vr/ who just likes some JRPGs... I don't think it's fair, or honest, to tell them Japanese is easy or simple or worthwhile. It's probably not worthwhile to them. It's not worth the thousands of hours, the years.

Not the guy you were talking with before, but if you're still around, how slow is "slowly"? 10 cards a day?

Given that there are 1258 cards in that deck, 10 cards a day would take you about 4 months or so, which seems like quite a lot of time to spend on a grammar resource to me.

>>133903775
Learning another language is always worth the effort if you have the motivation to pull through.

The worst that can happen to them is that they get started and quite soon notice that it takes a lot of time. Then they either keep going or stop. If they stop they didn't loose much, and if they keep going then they will gain a lot.

I loved learning Japanese when I started, and while I feel like my reading ability has somewhat stagnated due to my momentary disinterest in any complex literature, I still find joy and fascination in practicing my listening and actually improving. Little surpasses the pleasures of the mind.
>>
>>133903967
It's a little bit slower than western languages because you need to get to grips with the kanji, but no way on Earth does it make it that much harder than a language like French or Spanish
>>
>>133904037
Slowly means thoroughly, anon. Ideally we would all be doing 1,000 new cards a day but no one has the autism in them to spend 16 hours a day on Japanese. You literally can't study too much Japanese.

Nowadays all I do is read stuff, I'm not having a bad time or anything, I really was just stressing the huge amount of time it takes. 95% of the hard work is honestly just getting through Tae Kim, the Jouyou Kanji, and the DOJG, everything after that is just passive consumption of media pretty much, so I mean, don't think of it has "4 years of hard study", but "6 months of hard study then years of relaxed media consumption".

Practically what I'm doing right now. Reps+one Tae Kim lesson every day and then DOJG when I'm done with it.

Is this a meme?

It's the hardest fucking language that there is for an English speaker and most Europeans as well.
>>
>>133906584
The main thing is that I spent a year doing it. Way too long. Reading early as possible (or listening) is essential! In my opinion, you will make 0 real progress in a language until you read, Tae Kim and DOJG and reps just prepare you to read, in a sense. I know because I made very little progress in the year I dawdled around in, my first novel was hard as shit, so obviously I didn't benefit much from not reading. In short, I don't really think, from my standpoint, that you should change anything, just be sure you don't spend a long time before starting to read.
>>
>>133906584

Thanks, I'll take your advice to heart. Reps do take a lot of time for me because I'm very slow and easily distracted so I don't have too much time to read (or rather I don't feel like studying anymore because I had to drag myself through long sessions of leeches) so reading isn't very pleasurable for me, especially since there isn't much compelling content I can read at my level.

I wish I hadn't given up / had started learning Japanese when I was a neet.
>>
>>133906677
This is true. You should be reading as soon as you're capable of doing so.

>>133906637
The main reason Japanese is easy to learn is there's so much interesting and enjoyable content that just by reading the kind of stuff anyone with taste would be reading anyway, you learn Japanese. Any other language you have to force yourselves to slog through boring shit to learn it, it's difficult as hell. Obviously this doesn't apply to normalfags who learn by talking to people.
>>

That's a joke. Mandarin is ridiculously easy once you've learned the tones. Even fucking Steve was translating in and out of it in less than 9 months.

>>
>>133906928
For me, personally, I'd drag my feet through reps, so 30 minutes of work would turn into hours of work, and then I'd say "i spent so long on reps I don't need to read". Problem is that turned into a whole year of not reading.

I got over it, mainly, by closing internet, and every time I tabbed out of anki, I would make myself tab into a VN, so it was either read a VN or do anki. The hardest part if the beginning of reading but that's over within a month as long as you actually read, I think (assuming you finished Tae Kim, of course, DOJG is a plus). Good luck anon. Remember that choosing to do just Anki isn't failure, it's just kind of slow progress.
>>
>>133907068
By finishing Tae Kim, do you mean remembering everything?

I've been through it, and forgot more or less everything... Had to go through it a bunch of times, and still there's stuff I can't remember

>Even fucking Steve was translating in and out of it in less than 9 months.
He was devoting literally every minute of everyday for 9 months to get to that point.

>>
>>133907137
The key is going through it once, so you know what's in it; when you read native material, you'll be like "oh this is X which I saw in tae kim", and then you can easily go and "re-learn" it, and soon you've have seen it so much you don't need to check Tae Kim anymore. Same for DOJG, except I just used an anki deck for the DOJG so I rarely ever had to go actually read through the book.
>>
>>133907213
Hardly. He was mostly doing "listening and reading" for 5-6 hours a day. A few people here have been doing that in Japanese for way longer and can't translate in/out of it.
>>
