I'm curious, how new are you?

I cared far more about the series' light-hearted aspects than its dramatic aspects. A lot of the characters except for Ryou were likable to at least some extent. The series most consistently enjoyable whenever the characters are happy and playing off of each other. Said times aren't exactly the most original of scenes but they're executed just fine. A lot of the "sadder" aspects of the series such as Nagisa's and Ushio's deaths don't have much of an impact because the story cuts corners to get them killed in a way that feels manipulative. Their impact on Tomoya as a character, which was the best thing to come from them dying, was completely thrown out the window for the sake of a shoe-horned happy ending. That doesn't mean I dislike all of the drama, though. The plotline involving Tomoya's relationship with his father was really well-developed and executed. I also liked the arc involving Sunohara in After Story. Despite those and Ushio's arc being the best parts of After Story, it's ultimately brought down by the aforementioned drama and the ending. In terms of enjoyability and execution, I like the first season more than After Story and I don't think it's worth the praise it gets.

It didn't change my life but it did give me a useful example of something with a shit first season and great second season.

I forgot to mention, season one still had some awful drama with the most notable example being when the losers of the Clannadmanbowl started crying, which was one of the hardest laughs I got in a while, and the stuff with Kotomi. Despite those, I still feel that season one is better than season two overall.

The first season is genuinely awful though.

The characters all all horribly horribly written. AS only really escaped it by leaving most of the girls behind. I'm pretty glad I watched this show when I was younger and didn't notice those things, since I probably would never have seen the show otherwise.

Clannad is a little less than one cour of a good show sandwiched between 1.5 and 0.5 cours of a terrible fucking trainwreck.

The first season is just complete fucking rubbish, meaningless unfunny antics and insipid one-note walking cliches. After Story keeps going with too much of that until they graduate, which is when we get to the good part where the show focuses on a few core people in the cast and manages to actually make them relatable and human, and give them some adversity to get through that isn't *holds up spork* tier random bullshit.

We see an amazing character arc for Tomoya culminating in his tearful reconciliation with Ushio and as a nice encore also with his dad.

Unfortunately the writer's brain damage resurfaces at that point and Ushio gets KeyAIDS and the script takes a huge stinking steaming shit on all the themes it might've tried to communicate earlier, culminating in the most shitty deus ex machina "lol just kidding" ending you could possibly imagine.

Also fuck your magic dragon balls, they are terrible fucking storytelling because they are never significant or relevant, not once, before the very final part where they supposedly justify a complete trainwreck of an "it was just a dream" ending.

I always thought of the orbs in a kind of scientific way, rather than them being peoples wishes. The way I see it they're just something produced when the two worlds come into contact, like a fire producing smoke. The ending caused a massive reality change (world conract) leaving millions of them behind like residue.
