Don't see this show being discussed much on /a/ anymore outside of webm threads. Strange considering how much it was loved when it aired.

Just rewatched it for the first time recently. The show is still fantastic without a doubt, but I'm still not as in love with the finale as everybody else seemed to be when it aired. I'm not quite sure why that is, but I guess I was expecting a lot more answers than we actually got.

It felt throughout the series that everything was building towards a definite conclusion where all the loose threads from the 12 episodes would be tied up. And while most indeed were, the ending was still very open-ended and there was much left unanswered.

Anybody else feel that way about it?

What went unanswered that you thought should have been answered?

/a/ will probably point out that I missed explanations for all this somehow, but here goes:

>what exactly is the nature of the shared history Houou and Emonzaemon?
>why does Princess Hitei not give a shit about whether Shikizaki's plan comes to fruition or not?
>why exactly did the rebellion fail when there was every indication that it should have succeeded?

I watched Katanagatari about a year after it aired, and I was convinced the batch torrent I had downloaded was missing an episode or scenes when I reached the end of episode 4 without seeing that fight.

Like, why hype up Sabi up to the heavens only to have him killed offscreen? I know the question has been asked before, but it remains unanswered.

Also, Hitei a best.
>>
>>133814563
>what exactly is the nature of the shared history Houou and Emonzaemon?
Former ninja bros. Don't think they said anything more than that.
>why does Princess Hitei not give a shit about whether Shikizaki's plan comes to fruition or not?
She had a twisted personality and liked when things didn't go to plan. That's why she wanted to change history but would have been fine had her plan failed.
>why exactly did the rebellion fail when there was every indication that it should have succeeded?
Leader was just replaced by one of his family who ran shit the same way and so nothing changed. The only people who were doing anything that could change anything in the end was Shichika and Hitei; Shichika only cared about avenging Cheerio and Hitei didn't care about anything other than just fucking with stuff.

It's been a while since I've watched it but

Gee I wonder why. And Katanagatari still has threads pretty often considering it's 4 years old.
>>
>>133814757
>Former ninja bros. Don't think they said anything more than that.
But weren't they from rival villages? Also, how had Emonzaemon lived for so long?

>She had a twisted personality and liked when things didn't go to plan
I gathered that, but it seemed rather weak explanation for her simply becoming disinterested in what had been so far portrayed as her goal.

>Leader was just replaced by one of his family who ran shit the same way and so nothing changed.
I was talking about the original rebellion.

Because that was how the story was written though I guess animefags had it worst since of course that all episode preview was entirely anime original, nothing like that was in the LN.

The point of episode 4 was supposed to be about how everyone thought it was going to be about Sabi who up until then was the biggest threat but instead it showed who was actually the biggest threat, Nanami.
>>
>>133815043
As far as I know there was nothing complicated about that, Shichika's dad worked for the Shogun so of course he was sent after the rebels.
>>
>>133815539
>Shichika's dad worked for the Shogun so of course he was sent after the rebels.
Fuck, I completely got the wrong end of the stick in that case. I was convinced that Shichika's dad had been fighting for the rebellion and had for some reason turned on Togame's father.
>>
>>133815495
>The point of episode 4 was supposed to be about how everyone thought it was going to be about Sabi who up until then was the biggest threat but instead it showed who was actually the biggest threat, Nanami.
Yeah, that was a great twist to be fair. But the fact that most people were sitting on the edge of their seats for the entire episode waiting for Sabi to arrive sorta detracted from it if you as me.

what bothered me the most about the ending is how insignificant it felt. the overpowered guy just killed all the enemies and it was obvious from the start that he'd come out victorious. it was just tedious to watch, fight after fight, the outcome already clear, the fights not really all too interesting.

so many characters were killed off and some of those I really liked. in those cases I could overlook how boring the fights were. but when you barely know a character and just kill it off in an uninteresting way, it felt meaningless.

Very true. Like, I get what they were going for with Shichika's terminator-esque climb through the castle, but it just came across as an over-elaborate explanation for the fact that all the swords are now broken. It was cool, sure. But with the exception of the Emonzaemon fight, it all lacked any real relevance to the plot.

Saves weight and development costs, as you don't need a case made of steel or brass to hold the boolit and primer and gunpowder.
Also, since the whole thing is used up, you don't need a mechanism such as an extractor, further simplifying the operation.
It sounds good in theory but hasn't been perfected yet.

Here's the cool part, You use the propellant as the case.

That's sounds like an expensive manufacturing process.

Also, is it not gonna cause issues in the firing chamber when the bullet is practically surrounded by explosives?
>>
>>133817105

Pengin's power is luck.
But unlike the materials that were used to make the house, he has to die at some point.
His "not dying luck" is less than the other things that get hit, so he ends up taking the bullets instead.
Instead of destroying the metal and wood holding the house together, he is destroyed, because his "not dying luck" runs out faster.

At least that's how it makes sense to me.

He's firing away from himself, and has some idea what the trajectory is too.

He isn't relying on luck, but on speed and/or being in the right place at the right time.

>Also, is it not gonna cause issues in the firing chamber when the bullet is practically surrounded by explosives?
No, but if the chamber does get hot enough, say after going on full auto for a while, the cartridges may prematurely detonate when they come in contact with a hot chamber.

The design is flawed, but it's cool as fuck and is something that may be revisited in the future.
>>
>>133817713

The primer is an explosive, so it gets detonated to cause the primary propellant to go off.

It may leave the barrel after the bullet like a wad would leave after the shot or slug came out of the barrel of a shotgun.
Or, there might not be any plastic at all.

The point was to show that without the rules Togame placed on him, Shichika would have destroyed all his previous opponents with ease.
It was incredibly satisfying watching Shichika steamroll the same swords, which previously took 40+ minute long episodes to defeat, in no time at all, as he says out loud how it would been just as easy to do the same in all his previous battles, with a few exceptions.
The rules were a way to mislead the viewer. Shichika was still OP as fuck even with those rules in place, rarely there's a struggle, so we're misled by thinking that's the full extent of his strength, when in actuality, it was no where close, which is why the final episode leaves you in awe.

>>
>>133817105
The point was that his ninpou just alters his luck, it's not some all-powerful unbreakable one-line rule of the universe like a Medaka Box power, the nipou have faults and are not absolute. It wasn't that Pengin couldn't get hit by any projectiles ever, it was just extraordinarily unlikely to ever happen due to luck manipulation.
Emonzaemon tested the limits of his luck by firing many bullets from unorthadox angles, and due to the ricochet they each had multiple chances to hit Pengin, further increasing the "accuracy".

It's really all summed in Emonzaemon speech before finishing him off, the love the universe had for him didn't stretch far enough into the future, and Pengin's luck ran out.

Saying "why doesn't /a/ talk about this" is just an icebreaker, really. It's a simple thing for the OP to say that eases into the conversation rather than just saying "Katanagatari thread go" without having a Katanagatari thread for the past few days, if not weeks.

Open your history books kids
it was Russia

I tried watching this a few years ago and dropped it after episode 7. Why do you like the show so much? I could easily be convinced to give it another go because I adore the character designs.

I couldn't continue watching because every conversation and interaction was so fucking weird and unnatural. Why can't Nisio write a conversation between humans?

didnt the shots just ricochet around the room until eventually one of them popped pengins face off?

If what you're looking for is characters that act like real people, I suggest not watching anime.

meisai was the third sword right? yep she died. shichika killed her right before togame was gonna tell him not to.

The walls were made of paper, so that would be impossible.

I think the implication is that Emonzaemon somehow managed to hit one of the bullets that was lodged in the wall from his first volley and ricochet his shot off of that. Pretty good aim.
>>
I didn't get then ending, why did he continue to live with another girl?
>>
>>133831008
Your explanation doesn't make sense within the context of what Emonzaemon says during the fight however.

This guy's explanation does though: >>133817606

But Russia failed miserably. Largely due to its own incompetence.

He didn't, we can assume that, whether or not Shichika lived an uneventful life after the anime, he was satisfied.
Based on what we see at the end, Peacock girl is following him around, much to his dismay, but lets her come along anyway, because she's rich, and can provide him with food, travelling expenses, etc.

>Based on what we see at the end, Peacock girl is following him around, much to his dismay
To be fair, I expected him to bear a lot more animosity towards her considering the fact that she was instrumental in Togame's death.

You're right, but you're wrong.

Though she explicitly sent Emonzaemon after her, the show kinda plays up how she died because of her own quest for revenge.

Worth mentioning the bit where Shichika asked Hitei if she actually hated Togame

I'm not sure I quite understand what you mean there.
>>
>>133839705
The impression I got is that she died because she was [a manipulative bitch].
I lost track of where I was going with this when I made that first post.

But I agree, I would think he'd dislike peacock just a bit more, but I guess not.
>>
>>133838525
Because Hitei is best girl.
>>
>>133840768
How can people like Bitchei? She appeares just a few times in the anime and she is always seen like an evil bitch plotting. Togame's interactions with Shichika are the best, she's best girl among best girls.
>>
Is it canon that Togame doesn't wear panties?
>>
>>133841734
There's no evidence to suggest that it's not canon. Panties weren't really a thing in old timey Japan.
