I kind of feel like its losing focus though. Like, what exactly was the purpose of the laughter MKJB? Why not just have Nesta and her puppets and Subete? It kind of cheapens Tsutomu's apparent death by making the thing he had to defeat something that barely had any focus.

What's more, it's hard to really have any strong feelings about Nesta one way or the other, considering how recently she became part of the story. They honestly should have been involving her in the story during all those SoL episodes so this would have more emotional impact.

Honestly, the episode was all over the place. Like, there are parts where they cut back and forth between Nesta destroying shit in the real world and Akira and Maia in San and Akira is saying he's going to stop Nesta where it seems like they're not even in the Logos World anymore. And then Maia apparently gets rid of them by...being really inspired by the big fire attack? Or something?

I think they're trying to call back to the beginning when they point out that DEAVA loses if an MKJB gets away.

The situation is getting out of hand because they can't drop their mandate to focus on Subete and Nesta. As a matter of fact, despite being clearly the weaker threat, they have to clear the MKJB's first unless they want to have a repeat of the Mu incident.

It's a rather cruel situation when you have to intentionally walk into defilade.

The worst part is that Zessica had one last amazing scene during Mikage's day out. That scene could have been leveraged in either direction, but they instead failed to capitalize at all, with ample opportunity to do so too.

I got tired of Mikono's shitty shy damsel in distress act pretty quickly. By episode 5 it became clear Mikono and Amata liked each other and they knew it, but they made no effort to progress in their relationship for no given reason. And we're supposed to think Zessica is mean for trying to steal Mikono's pseudo-boyfriend, but in reality Mikono looked like a passive bitch instead.

And this goes on for no apparent reason for the rest of the show. By the time the whole thing with defending Kagura happens I just wished they actually let him have her and leave everyone else alone.

Mikono was written as an otome/shoujo heroine. She was meant to be the female audience's self insert. And Amata was the typical nice guy self-insert, too.

Kagura is the hot tsundere/yandere stalker straight from shoujo. Zessica is the hot action tomboy that wants the MC's dick for no reason, typical of shonen and mecha shows. They're both the wish fulfillment love interests.

I thought it was pretty clear that the obvious outcome was Amata with Zessica and Mikono with Kagura, but they instead chose to pair up the bland self-inserts together, who knows why.

If the intent was to suggest that we should find someone "real" to have a relationship with instead of the fantasy wish option, they needed to pick one of two things.

1. Deliver the flaws on the wish option so it becomes clear they're just as broken as anyone else (Zessica's poorly handled wangst, Kagura's obvious arrested development)
2. Clarify the self inserts into their own characters so they become an acceptable or even superior option. (There needed to be something here for an example, but there's nothing here but shouts of Mikono-san and Amata-kun)

Finally, pairing the spare Zessica and Kagura would deliver catharsis to the arrangement; Even your dream girl/guy deserves someone and you should be happy they've got a better half.

This is all purely theoretical however; This scenario requires development that did not occur for characters that were not assigned these roles.

The thing is, the female staff (and eventually Okada) were rooting for Kagura, and they liked Mikono with him better. Hence why in the last episodes they spend a lot of time together and Mikono barely even mentions Amata. And the voice actors liked Zessica above Mikono as both a character and love interest.

And according to Kawamori, people weren't supposed to root for Kagura and Zessica, because they didn't felt actual love, just lust. They were never meant to be anything but hopeless love rivals that weren't deserving of their respective love interest's because their love was shallow (Kagura because of smell and reincarnations, Zessica because it's her fetish and she's horny).

But when Mikono and Amata started to be insufferable as a couple, people started to pair them up with Kagura and Zessica because it just looked better than having two bland shits together. It didn't help that both Kagura and Zessica were very desperate to get with their respective love interests, and the fact that they failed over and over again but kept trying anyways just makes you root for them.

All you said could have worked if they had planned this, but obviously they didn't. The staff was divided between what Kawamori wanted and what everyone else wanted. On one side, Kawamori wants to make Zessica look like a smug bitch, and Kagura like a psychotic stalker. And in the other side the staff wants to show Kagura blushing and fighting for Mikono, and Zessica trying to please Amata and sacrificing herself for him.

It all ends in the main couple sucking balls and the love rivals that you weren't supposed to root for look like far better options, and not being like Kawamori wants them to be because the rest of the staff made them look too likable. Kagura looks like he genuinely cares and loves Mikono, Zessica like she genuinely loves Amata and wants to protect him, they don't look like the lustful assholes Kawamori wants them to be.
