Well like I said at this point they just seem to be trying to salvage the season with maximum fan service and exploiting the shows most and possibly only kind of popular character to date with full throttle fanservice. It's the same kind of thing they did with Saekano and it worked well enough there so I guess we'll see what happens in another couple months. I fully expect it to sell at least 1.5-2 times whatever it's stalker estimate is because of the Aniplex padding effect. Some Japanese fans speculate when their shows are half flopping they like to buy back part of their own stock to save face as they seem to have this obsession with trying to portray themselves as number 1 all the time.

The shows BD sales were a mediocre 6-7K average when it pulled out pretty much all the stops in terms of mega hyped staffing, casting and advertising. That show was supposed to be the biggest thing they've done to date clearly with how much went into it's marketing campaign and all the posters all over Akihabara and TV specials they pulled out at the time. They also made it clear that they were going after Gundam but to my knowledge the show never really had any successful merchandise and actually sold worse on Blu-Ray than even G-Reco. It's going to be forgotten faster than Star Driver and Guilty Crown. When it comes to originals A-1 should really just stick to the weepy melodrama teen youth anthem stuff, it's about all they're good at.

It's pretty impressive how it's sales went steadily downhill into the second season. Unsurprisingly the Gen Urobuchi written episodes on the first volume did by far the best of any of them and it's the only time I've ever really seen a 1st volume BD start with 3 episodes on it. It's just so crystal clear that they banked practically everything about this project on Urobuchi's name for branding and wanted to make sure all the episodes made it onto that one disc. After he left they had absolutely no idea what to do with the project other than to keep trying to work his name like he was still involved and maybe rely on Sawano hype. Show had piss poor planning beyond the marketing campaign, just like Asterisk is looking.

When are more people going to realize that A-1 is fucking dog shit despite all their hyping, branding, advertising, promises and early series enhanced budgets? Hit or miss at absolute best is what I'd give them maybe, but they're just so far up their own ass and make so many stupid decisions with how to approach their projects and schedule things that it's probably a testament to how stupid and gullible anime fans are nowadays that they've managed to stay solvent as an enterprise and generally praised despite reported large consecutive drops in operating income since 2013 despite all the shit that's gone on in the last couple years with botched adaptations of major properties that really shouldn't have been, killing their animators via overwork and just being incapable of holding a proper schedule do to overloading on samey projects in what looks like a quantity over quality attempt to cash in on the whole swords and sorcery fantasy phenomenon and/or melodramatic crying anime while it's still hot and the most famous staffers for the genres are still available.

I don't think it's just a coincidence, they're full aware who the character people respond most to now. It would not surprise me if the rest of the show revolves around giving her as much screen time and fanservice as possible since that's all the show has going for it at this point. From what I understand this part of the arc wasn't even supposed to feature her much but they literally seem afraid to go any length of time without her now that it's a month out to the first BD release. This is why nobody really seems to have any respect the Light Novel Battle Harem genre in the long run except for the same old kinds of people that only consume light novel tripe as their sole Japanese media diet. Unfortunately those are the only people really propping up the late night for night anime scene in Japan right now and the Western internet scene is pretty much full of people who figure retarded things like how if it doesn't have fanservice it isn't worth their time and isn't proper anime. It really don't mind it as long as the director doesn't take an extreme favoritism for one character, like the Railgun director did for Saten. He went as far as changing the order of the events from the manga in order to give Saten the maximum screentime and protagonism possible. Not enough with that, he also added new scenes and replaced other characters with Saten in other scenes. Let's not even talk about the anime-original arcs where he pretty much made Saten a mary sue, a 10/10 wife/mother material and the unique superspeshal character that saves the day.

Western anime communities is little better at this point. It largely gravitates towards watching the same kinds of shows even if the overall reception isn't necessarily identical. No matter how shitty battle harem anime are and how much people complain about the over saturation of them every season now it's still among the most routinely watched and discussed genres every single season which is great if people are just looking for ad revenue via streaming options.
