I can't help but feeling the trends of 2014-2015 have done noteworthy and possibly lasting damage to anime as a brand. I notice the fanbase somehow managed to get a whole lot stupider and petty during that period of a little over 6 seasons too so it looks like anime is probably going to find a way to dumb itself down even more to appealing to the lowest common denominator during the remainder of the decade.

This decade is when it feels like whatever and whoever was popular in the Light Novel and Visual Novel scene really started to take over the anime scene big time and now it's like that's all anybody really acknowledges, cares about or talks about anymore and if anime doesn't subscribe to those tropes it's seen as a sideshow or possibly not even a "proper anime" by the 90's generation people that got interested in it during the time period. Look at the kinds of shows people are willing to talk about or mention as highlights nowadays and it's almost always all VN/LN stuff.
