The linework, cinematography, and animation are all subpar. And the backgrounds look really plastic. Especially in the second season, I feel like there's just no heart in it. The first season had a couple of moments like the very first scene, falling asleep under the tree, or the mountaintop, that I still remember admiring at least a bit. The cinematography was brilliant in both seasons, and both seasons felt nearly identical in every manner possible. The emotional climax interspersing contrasting shots of sun and rain, birth and death, etc.; its combined use of cinematography and music to enhance the emotional impact of this scene was possibly the single most well-executed scene I've ever seen in anime. This is on the same level of that scene in the field in Clannad Afterstory, you know the one.

The death/rebirth archetype accompanied by sunlight after the rain is a fairly obvious choice on the director's part. I'd be surprised if even an incompetent moron wouldn't make use of that. The shots themselves, however, didn't offer anything praiseworthy and the emotional impact of the scene was generated pretty much through narrative alone. It was probably the best moment in S2 though so I'll at least give you that. And I appreciate that they let the scene run a bit longer with shots of scenery, albeit not all that interesting, to let the emotional impact resonate before the end.

I feel kind of bad for criticizing this since it's so fucking cheap looking, but notice the lighting during the scene in the interior. There's no change despite this being so fucking obvious low hanging fruit to reinforce the death/rebirth shit. If there was a single moment in the show to make use of some talent in the animation staff, this would be it.
