Does a native English speaker sound as bad speaking Japanese as a Japanese person speaking English does?
>>
>>133730778
English speakers always sound shitty when they try to speak some other language.
>>
>>133730778
I doubt it. Japanese has a very limited set of sounds which are very consistently put together, so it'd be pretty hard to fuck it up too badly, no matter how shit your pronunciation was.
>>
>>133730778
I don't know how accurate this is, but I once asked why japanese sounds so cute and someone said it's because japanese has more limited sounds and combinations of sounds so it sounds cute because it's like a baby that can't make all the sounds that we can

But on the other hand, we must sound to them like other languages sound to us that have a wider range of sounds, which usually don't sound cute at all. They just either sound completely silly and ridiculous or really rough.
So that's probably how we sound to japs
>>
>>133730887
Prove it. (Or somebody else prove it in case you're not native.)

I always wanted to hear what an English accented in Japanese really sounded like and not just a native Jap doing an impression of it.

Thanks. I don't even know why people like exhentai, since I can go to hitomi.la and get a direct download without having to rely on torrents.

I think I had an addon that let me get in before, but it stopped working. And I've done the cookie thing in the past but it took me like half an hour to do it and I clear my cookies all the time so it was just annoying.

I think exhentai has the most content directly uploaded, while sites like hitomi.la actually just "steal" exhentai's stuff. I know I've personally put a lot of galleries on exhentai that other people download and put on all sorts of other sites. So, in short, if you want the most stuff and you want it the fastest, panda is the way to go.

>>
>>133732879
This. The only time I've had to mess with my cookies is when I've tried to visit exhentai before logging into e-hentai. If you do that, exhentai sets a cookie in your browser which I guess marks you as not being logged in, so you have to delete it or you'll keep getting stuck at the sad panda even after you've logged into your e-hentai account.

I've never had to edit a cookie or anything like that though. I just log into e-hentai and that's it.

it's second week, I've studied about 300 words so far in anki. Now it's starting to get overwhelmingly difficult for me to progress cause I'm starting to forget old kanji as I'm spammed with over 100 words a day, 20 of which are new

Post your correct % for today. You might not be doing as badly as you think you are, but it's hard to say without seeing your stats.

Also, if you're having trouble with kanji, I would recommend writing them out as you encounter them. There's no need to be stupid about it and write them out 50 times each. Just a few times will do. Go to Jisho.org, look up the kanji in question, read the meaning of it and look at some words which use it (all this information should be on the kanji's page), then write the character out a few times (with proper stroke order) until you get the gist of it, then move on to the next one.

Okay, that really is bad. Are you perhaps being too liberal with the good and easy buttons and not using the hard button enough?

I don't really know what to advise beyond telling you to write the characters out. You could try doing a radical deck, I guess. I never did, but I've seen others recommend it before, so it might be worth looking into if kanji are really giving you that much trouble.

I think it will get better for you over time as you see more and more of them. The same few elements (radicals) will keep repeating across lots of different kanji, so after a whole most new kanji will just be different combinations of elements that you're already familiar with. It's just a matter of toughing it out until you reach that point.

It'd be spicy for me.

Wait a sec, just how many new cards were you trying to learn here? You're doing something stupid like 75 new cards a day, aren't you?

Judging from your comment, doing Anki in the way you're doing it now is extremely unpleasant for you (then, 2+ hours with a 60% correct rate would be unpleasant for anyone). You might've toughed it out today, but with a correct % like that it's going to be just as bad or even worse tomorrow. Turn down your new cards before you burn out and quit. I'd even say turn off your new cards completely for a few days and let your daily reviews drop a bit.

How do I into mining? Read until I reach X new words? Read for X minutes/hours? If so, what is X (50 words? 1 hour?)?
>>
>>133736219
Add every new word you see.
>>
>>133736219
It really doesn't matter as long as you are reading a lot and aren't doing so little that you aren't learning the new kanji that you come across.
>>
>>133736219
Just read as much as you can and add every new word to your mining deck.
>>
>>133736219
Sit down, read until you think you've read a decent amount (or keep reading after that if you're enjoying yourself, which you should be). In the meantime mine words you think would be nice to reinforce the memory off. You shouldn't be worried about more details than this. The important thing is that you keep reading as much as possible.

I plan on making a textfile of words and then using Rikaisama to import them to Anki, but without a clearly defined goal for how much I should be reading, it will be easy for me to be lazy and tell myself I've done enough when perhaps I haven't.

For instance, with Anki everyone says to aim for 20 words a day, so I kept that as my target and stuck to it, but I don't know what the target is in words or time when it comes to reading.
>>
>>133736349
This. In early stages you don't need to mine more than 10% of what you see to maintain an active deck. Even in later stages you don't need to mine more than a third of the new words you see. The only time when it's good to mine much more than that is when you're starting on something new which might have a more specific vocabulary. You might want to learn a lot of those new words fast.
>>
>>133736428
You should be reading because you want to, not to hit a set goal.
>>
>>133736428
Plenty, when you start out, it isn't uncommon to add around 200+ words per day.
>>
>>133736428
>it will be easy for me to be lazy and tell myself I've done enough when perhaps I haven't.
That's more a matter of your own self-discipline than a matter of Japanese learning. The consensus is that you should read as much as possible, so if you must set a fixed goal set it as high as you think you're capable of fulfilling.

Do I need to give up being bilingual to learn Japanese?

Hello, I'm a 22 year old male who is seriously studying Japanese in the US. I get a lot of passive immersion and text Japanese people on LINE. But I feel like to learn this language I have to give up both my native languages and I'm willing to do that. However It's not easy and I have to constantly use Spanish and English. I was wondering if being trilingual was possible at this age (22) I know it's kind of ridiculous but I just feel so old and late so if I have to give up Spanish and English to learn Japanese what should I do... or is it possible to still be strong in all 3 languages before I die? I know Japanese will always be a life long process... but I want to use Japanese only!! I like reading in Spanish too and was wondering if I also have to give that up. I donot use English much now except for work. Please someone help and let me know.
Like If I were to go to Japan I would have to stop speaking Spanish and English. But like my main question is if it's still possible to have good knowledge in all 3 languages or do I have to give up my native languages for Japanese? Like I said I would do it because immersion in Japanese is important to me and I really love Japan. I have been told that in order to really well learn the language Japanese needs to always be used, no exceptions. If I can't express in Japanese then I stay quiet until I learn how to say it in Japanese. I like the method but would like more input please.

I'm really sure that google has their top departments working day and night to figure out how to represent written japanese and english in a way that a neural network could map the two together -- toiling tirelessly over breaking keyboards, coffee-stained pants, and oily, sweaty, unshaved beards. Absolutely positive.

That's literally the only way that machine TL could ever be revolutionized. Otherwise there are always going to be serious fundamental problems with it. Tokenization is the single hardest problem in natural language computer science. It's not people working on machine TL, because the problem also applies in domains other than actual natural language processing.

I'm sure that you understand the problems associated with making a heuristic that is correct. Doing that itself is an NP problem. If you approximate a heuristic you're only doing what has already been done.

Computer science is a formal science, like math. It doesn't actually involve delving into the nature of the universe, but it does deal in logic, and acts as an important support to the rest of the STEM community. Do you think that the LHC wasn't, to a notable extent, the brain child of all of those people sitting around thinking about logarithms for decades on end? The LHC wouldn't have been possible a hundred years ago. We largely have computer scientists to thank for figuring out how to capture, process, and convey information in such a quick, clean manner.

Three things.
One, there is one of those being made, but it's awful.
Two, those things are available as graded readers, no need to shoehorn a clunky VN system into it.
Three, the current tools for learning Japanese are pretty much perfect, I can think of nothing else that would make learning Japanese an easier experience, so don't worry about making software.

>Precise definitions vary,[4] but features often cited as characteristic of hard science include producing testable predictions, performing controlled experiments, relying on quantifiable data and mathematical models, a high degree of accuracy and objectivity, and generally applying a purer form of the scientific method.[2][5][6][7][8] A closely related idea (originating in the nineteenth century with Auguste Comte) is that scientific disciplines can be arranged into a hierarchy of hard to soft on the basis of factors such as rigor, "development", and whether they are "theoretical" or "applied", with physics, and chemistry typically being the hardest, biology in an intermediate position, and the social sciences being the softest.[4][9]

>Some philosophers and sociologists of science have questioned the relationship between these characteristics and perceived hardness or softness. The more "developed" hard sciences do not necessarily have a greater degree of consensus or selectivity in accepting new results.[10] Commonly cited methodological differences are also not a reliable indicator. Psychologists use controlled experiments and economists use mathematical modelling, but as social sciences both are usually considered soft sciences,[1][2] while natural sciences such as biology do not always aim to generate testable predictions.[6] There are some measurable differences between hard and soft sciences. For example, hard sciences make more extensive use of graphs,[4][11] and soft sciences are more prone to a rapid turnover of buzzwords.[12]

Computer science involves maths, such as logic, graph theory, algorithmic complexity etc, but it also encompasses many other fields of research that are not maths-related. For example, the study of GUIs. To say computer science is purely maths is to discard those other fields as not being part of computer science, which is incorrect.

It's not like economics at all. Economics is ultimately a study of human behavior as it applies to the flow of money. It's 50% social science, 50% business. Computer scientists tackle problems such as clean data transmission and efficient processing. It's all math and logic.

Economists didn't solve the problem of how to make anti-aliasing more than just a pipe dream or design face recognition technology, for example. That's about as far outside of their field of expertise as you're going to get.

One upon a time someone was trying to get help with linux on the debian forum, but their problem was so trivial that advanced users capable of helping them continually overlooked their requests for help. This person tried to get help for days until a spark went off in their mind. "These people aren't giving me any help, but they sure like arguing." Instantly, he connected the dots, and his hands began to move on their own: "Why would you use such a retarded operating system? Linux can't even dynamically load USB audio devices!"

In an instant, the future of internet communities was ruined forever.

DO NOT BUTT INTO OTHER PEOPLES' ARGUMENTS. DO NOT RESPOND TO INCORRECT ANSWERS. ALWAYS RESPOND TO THE ORIGINAL QUESTION TO CLEAR UP MISCONCEPTIONS.

Don't respond to shitposts. If you get into an argument with a troll, someone has to step in to correct you. People frequently troll to make this happen and get help from that person who steps in to correct the argument. Correcting arguments has to be done because otherwise lurkers only see incorrect information, so please, please don't argue with people who give the wrong answer to a question. Just give the right answer to the original question.

How are you guys studying for the JLPT that's coming up? I'm taking N3 and I have a lot of practice tests from this guy named Arjun Sridhar which are good practice material but there are no answers. I think since time is limited I'm

1. Going to study grammar because that's the easiest part to learn quickly over a short amount of times.
2. Do practice tests to get used to the test.
3. REPS REPS REPS

Any /a/nons have advice or more material for the test? Does anyone know where I can find practice tests with answers?

Ah, so its like this then.

The /djt/ers who learned their japanese through anime and manga, usually take the n2 or n1, to see how well their neetdom has got them. Idk how much pass or fail though.

The other /djt/ers like me, are doing the djt only for degree or certificate shit. People will say you should only take the n1 or n2 then, but people have their own unique reasons for taking lower levels. They dont give a fuck about measuring or seeing how far they they've progress, they just want to pass the stupid test, so they buy the prep books.
>>
>>133741587

>producing testable predictions, performing controlled experiments, relying on quantifiable data and mathematical models, a high degree of accuracy and objectivity, and generally applying a purer form of the scientific method

Sounds like computer science to me. And not only that, but thanks to computer science, science is significantly more controlled and accurate than it ever could be at any point in the past.

I don't know what you think computer science is or how you came to the conclusion that it's comparable to economics, but you clearly aren't very well informed. If you're sending data packets out, but some of the information is getting corrupted and is unrecoverable, and you want to solve this problem, does this seem like something that can be solved with soft science? What about the problem of removing distortion from audio?

I suppose that you could argue that there non-hard science elements to certain jobs that are related to computer science (for example, predicting criminal behavior and potential exploits if you deal in security, or considering what might be convenient to a user if you're designing a search algorithm), but even those jobs build on a very strong foundation in math and logic, and the foundations that tie every computer science-related job together are very hard.

I've read around 10 vns during that month, I'm only taking so long with Innocent Bullet because it's dead boring. Case in point: I'm tabbing out to post this. When I get hooked on a moege I finish it in a day or two.

And I'm not cocky. That list is filled with basic stuff you see all the time in moege. It's stuff I'm familiar with, and I've only practically read moege. I guess disagreeing with you makes me cocky? Whatever dude.
>>
>>133743091
At least half of them are things you're likely to see in any given moege at least a few times. Not the type of thing you'd see every other sentence for the most part, but still stuff you would know well if you actually read VNs.

Conan: Hey, that incense was still burning, right? How much was left?
Woman: Ya, about half
Conan: Then the incense was set up about 15 minutes before you returned, because the incense lasts 30 minutes

This took me about 10 minutes. I'm assuming 持つ means "to last" here because it makes sense, but I'm not sure I've seen it used like that before.
>>
>>133743010
>Idk how much pass or fail though
From the stories I've read here, those that pass have been been studying for about 4 or 5 years. There might be others that pass the test in less time but their score isn't that much more than the passing mark.
>>
>>133743201

>>
>>133743219
>Ya

>>
>>133743201
I'm a NEET, so some of those were 12 hour a day sessions. I tend to only read 1 route, and about half of those VNs are nukige. I finished Tsuma Migui earlier and that game was short as hell.
The moege in a day or two was an exaggeration; a good length moege like Daito took me four days of reading, whereas something like Kimi no Tonari is much shorter and would only take 1-2 days.
>>
>>133743219
You got it. 持つ means the candle or stick or container or whatever holds enough incense for 30 minutes, but "last" is more natural English.
>>
>>133743285
>I tend to only read 1 route
You can't really say that you've read a vn if you've only read one route. You're missing a huge chunk of the total text.
>>
>>133743363
Not him but I prefer stories that have a definite progression, so I just pick whatever choices I would make myself and take the route I get as cannon. If I really like the characters in a VN I might play more routes but I usually don't.
>>
>>133743363
I think most people don't read every route of moege, but I'd agree with regards to plot games. Also if it's a semi-moege (plot but still lots of moege elements) that has a "true route" then I think you have to finish the true route to say you have read it, but you don't have to do all the side routes. For example if you do Kana and Kodachi routes in daitosho I think it's fair to say you've read it.
>>
>>133743250
Yep, but the point I want to make is. Theres the difference from being gud at doing jlpts and knowing japanese. But, well just see how well that hold 5 years from now...

btw, 4 the 5 years sounds pretty bad desu, no offense senpai. If you google it, there are people who pass the n1 in just 2 years of studying japanese. I assume anyone could do it, if you focus on studying how to pass the jlpt then learning japanese.

inb4 but anon, native speakers have no problem passing the jlpt, because shut the fuck up
>>
>>133743363
Someone argued with me about that before and my opinion remains the same: I don't care. It's not really a big deal. VNs vary in length so much as it is (tsuma migui is probably 1/20th of Daitoshokan's text if not less) that I don't think making distinctions of how many routes read matter. And even if every VN was the same length it'd be too bothersome to say "i've read 3 routes and 3 common routes" instead of "I've read 3 vns".

Wait. A while back, I posted complaining about how there are too many great VNs to read and not enough time, and you replied encouraging me, saying your reading speed gets dramatically faster as you improve at Japanese, to the point you can finish a VN in a day.

Fuck you. I fucking believed the reading speeds you cited. Reading 1 route = finishing the VN? What the fuck is wrong with you? I want my encouragement and inspiration back.
>>

Oh I see, you're one of those "anki is just a meme" guys. Well consider the following: Your stance is stupid and anki is a very efficient way of retaining vocab, especially for people who don't devote a ton of time to reading, but are casual learners of Japanese / casual consumers of Japanese media.

What, is having 1 day turn to 3-4 days that much of a downer? That's still easily 50-100 vns a year, you'll run out of truly great ones with 2-3 years. No worries. I mean, do you intend to only play eroge for 5 years before quitting?

I like anki a lot and have used it daily for over a year; I didn't mean "what the fuck" in a "wow you used anki too much" way, but rather in a "wow that is a fucking lot that's incredible" way. Awed respect, anon.

Moege only take long because they're filled with bloated text and tend to be boring, so not only do you have to read more, you're less motivated to read it. There's really not enough truly great VNs for you to be worried about it. If I were you, I'd be crying over the fact that world literature in general has so many amazing things that one can't even finish if they read all day for the rest of their life, with more being written as we speak. If you read consistently you can knock out most VNs that interest you by your 30s no problem. Books though? You're going to be dead before you scratch half of them.

What do you guys think about setting a maximum interval?
>>
>>133748542
Memory is connections. If you don't make a connection you won't remember anything. Look at radicals and connect them; connect the kanji to the meaning, and thus the meaning to the words. Mnemonics help.
>>
>>133748548
More reps consisting entirely of words I'm already familiar with. Pass. My logic is minimize anki but be productive and efficient stuff while using it, a max interval would add more time and be less productive, the opposite of what I want.

Japanese is something completely new to your brain. Your brain is both lazy and selective about what it remembers. If its strange, complex information, it won't believe that it'll have a use for it (especially not one that justifies that level of work), and it'll discard it. That's why its so vital that you come back to Japanese literally every day.

It's also why you need to start reading as soon as possible. Applying what you've learned does wonders for making your brain wake up and realize "Woah, this is important. I need to remember this." And if you read every day, it'll start placing all of that information into your long term memory and prioritize it for easy access.

Focus on reading, do less anki. Burning out on anki is among the worst things you can do. I'm 19 months in but going strong simply by doing little anki, which lets me target rare kanji and more obscure words while still spending most of my time reading.

Can someone explain to me then, why watashiwa - わたしは- looks the way it does? Why is the final syllable unit not identical to the first one? And what character is the last one, because it looks different from almost every character except the one for a badly drawn 'yo' according to the information I'm using?
