1) if we couldn't pirate anime/manga, then the prices of bd and hard copies would drastically lower. The price is high because it give the perfect level of customers and profit margin in the current situation, and are viewed as collectors items.

While I don't think illegal downloads are bad for the American side of the industry, I can see where OP is coming from. I typically buy anything on DVD/Blu-ray that I find myself rating 8 or higher. The only catch is that if it didn't have an American release. The reason I think it's reasonable is because if there was no American release and I didn't download illegally, how the fuck would I have ever gotten wind of it otherwise? I think my biggest issue is that there are many who wont buy the American release and have even critizised me on buying DVDs of anime which blows me away. Actually, I wouldn't watch anime if there weren't a _convenient_ way to obtain it.

Torrenting is about as convenient as it gets. I get high quality, ad-free video subtitled by groups who are invested in and passionate about the medium. Compared to fansubs, streams are low-quality trash, and ordering physical disks is slow and clunky.

I have no qualms with paying. I haven't pirated a game since Steam came out and I haven't pirated music since Amazon started providing DRM-free instant downloads.

There is currently no way to get good anime on american tv. Plus everything is a good 3-5 years behind. If it was a week or 2 fine but im not waiting 3-5 years for a series to play catch up.

Also I was into anime way before I got into pirating. Through stuff like toonami, sci-fi channel, anime network on demand ect. Hell I still remember watching FMP on demand years ago and enjoying it then staying up late to watch Tokko on the sci-fi channel. It was good times.

It airs on TV for free. No one buys anime just to watch it.

In actuality Japanese get this shit on their TVs like any other cable programming. "buying" it costs whatever your cable bill does, which often comes bundled in with your internet if you're using cable these days. If this stuff aired exactly like it does there on Western TV I'd probably watch it on TV.

Like any other TV programming you better believe the Japanese DVR the shit out of anime and burn it off the hard drives to keep. They were recording it on programmed VCRs before that. They can also pirate this stuff just as easily as we can.

tl;dr Nips practically have it for free and/or as part of their regular cable programming anyway. They pay exorbitant prices for the BD because they are that die-hard of fans for it. Just because maybe a total pool of 100-200k people in Japan are willing to pay the fucking insane prices for BDs doesn't mean that there aren't millions of people watching the shows for "free" on TV/internet/pirating and just not buying the BDs.
