As with horror across most mediums, the problem is often that people go in with the wrong mindset.

People often watch horror movies with the idea of "You can't scare me!" and then wonder why they aren't scared.

Because most anime is done on the cheap the time and effort needed to do have a non-shit horror that's actually scary doesn't pan out.

I was going to type that but I feel that lack of budget can probably help the horror elements than harm it.

lack of animation can make for unnatural motion
instead of paying for whatever new j-pop band is popular for your OST you can start making more eerie music
and of course you can do the silent hill thing and put fog effects in place of the backgrounds.

Horror anime are generally just not scary, they are still effective in creating a creepy atmosphere and good story though so it isn't like they are a total writeoff.

Something about animation just ruins it when compared to horror manga. Maybe it is something to do with your mind filling in the blanks when you read manga to make things move in your head in a creepy or weird way etc between panels, whereas in anime not a lot is left up to the imagination.

Horror mostly works in live action because it feels more real and there is a total disconnect with anime for that, atleast with manga and literature you can self insert more easily into the situations.

The opening minute ruined the horror for me, you don't open your anime by randomly flashing as many generic spooky horror images you can think of at once, it just comes across as silly. They should have held onto those shots and used them at better moments to get the point across, instead of shoehorning them in before there's anything established to connect them to the characters and story. Instead of being mysterious and unexplained it came across like they had just slapped it together thinking a few bloody crows and china dolls made it horror.


I know it's not really brought up as horror, but anyone else feel that Ghost Hound actually succeeded a great deal with its imagery and sound early on? Obviously as it got more talking worm and giant headed baby it was harder to find scary but before we knew what was happening it was spooky.

They try to hold suspense or horror over a longer time.
This actually doesn't work all that good in a medium that comes out in a certain amount of time.

The only horror that works in 3D is either really subtle horror or horror with only humans involved.
Because it either walks of into shitty supernatural stuff or stuff that slaps in your face all five minutes 'I'M HORROR' which is not scary at all.
Animated has no borders on what to show without it looking out of place. And can still be subtle or not to obvious or as obvious as you need in the climax or shit.
So it should be possible to create a pretty fucking scary scenario really easy. Somehow shit just gets into gore or visual horror only.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. Horror games will always be more scary/horrorish to me because it involves the player directly, you're not just some remote observer confident in his own safety.

Highly depends on the game as well.
Some either kill you off so often that it doesn't matter after a while or some just pull cheap jumpscares, so that you're more concentrated on the actual gameplay so that you can't enjoy the actual horror.

It sucks because I love horror and I love anime. They don't mix too well. I'm surprised, I would think anime would be perfect for creating series like Tetsuo, basically a horror version of Parasyte. No need to make a bunch of costumes for the actors (or shitty CG overlapping actors) or anything, when the character changes, you just have the "changed" character drawn instead.

From narrative atmosphere to the music, to character designs and content of the plot. Somehow they just never come together like you think they would, given all the stuff out there.

Different Anon here, but yeah, I think one of the reasons I like supernatural shounen so much is because they use horror elements to hype up villains and powerlevels, and in some series they really nail it for two or three episodes. It's sad when I think about it, but then even if there was a full on horror anime I'd want it to have a few jokes and friendships involved like more general series. Black humour in horror is great, and friendships give you a good hook to see who survives to the end. Trying to pull those things off increases the chances of failure though.
