Hearing the difference now isn't the reason to encode to FLAC. FLAC uses lossless compression, while MP3 is 'lossy'. What this means is that for each year the MP3 sits on your hard drive, it will lose roughly 12kbps, assuming you have SATA - it's about 15kbps on IDE, but only 7kbps on SCSI, due to rotational velocidensity. You don't want to know how much worse it is on CD-ROM or other optical media.

I started collecting MP3s in about 2001, and if I try to play any of the tracks I downloaded back then, even the stuff I grabbed at 320kbps, they just sound like crap. The bass is terrible, the midrange…well don’t get me started. Some of those albums have degraded down to 32 or even 16kbps. FLAC rips from the same period still sound great, even if they weren’t stored correctly, in a cool, dry place. Seriously, stick to FLAC, you may not be able to hear the difference now, but in a year or two, you’ll be glad you did.
>>
>>133706137
FLAC is only important if you have a good setup.
>>133706270
fuck off with this /mu/ meme

There is a significant difference between FLAC and MP3 but its only noticeable with high quality phones and amp/dacs.

Get some good cans you fucking retards
>>
Get a better setup. Some good IEMs or good cans go a long way.
>>
Isn't FLAC the stuff that gets in your teeth? I don't have internet, so I can't look this up.
>>

rotational velocidencity
>>
If you're archiving it and want to transcode it one day, you would be fucking the audio up unless it was lossless. Those releases are for archiving.
>>
>>133706354

The difference between 320 mp3 and flac is negligible even with good headphones and an amp. External dacs are just about worthless unless you somehow have a trash soundcard or just really want to believe.

So does that mean all the work I did archiving 8tb of chinese cartoons will be wasted in a few years because only some of them FLAC audio included?
>>
>>133707189
Yep. I bet you grabbed the .mkv instead of .avi as well. You still have a few months before the TPP takes effect, so stock up now.
>>
>>133707370
What is wrong with the .mkv?
>>
>>133706270
What if I put it on an external harddrive after downloading it, and keep the harddrive stored correctly? Will that copy of my anime lose sound quality even if the harddrive is only used once every 3 months to backup new stuff?
>>
>>133707370
Well that's upsetting. Why AVI over MKV? I thought MKV was just a container.

Also, what would you recommend to do for older series or less popular ones which have no FLAC release? Some I can get the raws and mux myself, but some just aren't available.

This applies to anime? I've had the same copy of several shows for well over a decade, and I still rewatch them without noticing a massive problem with the sound. Yeah, it sounds worse than current stuff, but that's because the equipment/actors weren't as good back then, right?

Like, I have torrented shows I downloaded well over a decade ago, and they still sound fine to me. My headphones aren't studio quality, is this the kind of quality difference that only matters to audiophiles?

There is no widely approved theory on bit rot in the CS community at the moment. Although I have heard rumors that MKV has a higher probability of encountering bit rot, I would stick to the AVI format for archiving. Better yet, transcode the MP3 audio in the file to FLAC, that will protect you against both rotational velocidensity and bit rot.

BD audio, PCM, DTS, TruHD, are lossless. Encoding to a AAC/MP3 would be throwing away information. If you want an encode as close to the rips it has to be FLAC which has the best compression.

But if you're satisfied with listening to inferior approximations, knock yourself out.

Velociodensity degradation in hard disks is the symptom of the core problem of magnetic platters. This is fundamentally caused by the High-Q runout error from vibration of the platter, magnetic dislocations, and bit errors in the magnetic material from the superparamagnetic effect. Superparamagnetic effect is dominated by quantum instability which causes increased random magnetic fluctuations as smaller density platters are used. The effect is not deletion, but bit flips that occur near the read head activity from the realignment of the nearby magnetic alignments, which become more likely as smaller nanoparticles are used to store data. Using the hard drive kills data over time, so rewriting your files with robust ECC will ensure maximum bit perfection for as long as possible.
One might be inclined to believe that simply stocking up on older hard disc platters further from superparamagnetic instability would solve the problem. Unfortunately, older drives tend to use a different motor type with greater alignment errors which result in more data write errors. The effect is not unlike the broken record skipping over itself, although given the higher data rate involved, this does not result in a loop. What will happen is that the data will look over itself, resulting in a digital smearing effect, a sort of ghostly echo.
>>
>>133706137
FLAC is useless for storing movie/TV show/anime audio, but not for the reason /a/ seems to think.

FLAC is lossless, yes, but when it's transcoded from a lossy source, you're frankly better off just muxing the release with the regular audio track.

AC3, AAC, and DTS are pretty universally supported on most devices, and even if not,m the conversion and remux process is easy enough to be done by anyone who wants to

>Why are lossy soundtracks always released in 320kbps CBR?
Because that is the highest form of mp3 file you can get from a audio CD. I'm not a /g/ expert at audio stuff. Just load this Spek software with the piggy icon to see if the audio goes above 20kHz. I can only hear up to 17kHz. Most poorly created mp3's are below 15kHz which means I can't listen to it because I want to have the full kHz I can audibly hear. Lower mp3 file size means you'd get low kHz. 320kbps is the best encode you can get that is indistinguishable from .flac, .flac is for archiving. I'm just parroting, again I'm not an expert at /g/ audio topics.
>>
>>133708727
MP3 came about just before digital music hit mainstream.

Some of that is true. The frequency shit however is based on encoding schemes of the codec you're using and what you set the frequency of the music to. If it's anything below 44.1 kHz, it's trash. If you encode anything below 64 kbps in some codecs like Vorbis, that's when the frequency starts to get cut off.

>>133708580

Dolby Digital is lossy, unless it's Dolby TrueHD. DTS is probably lossy, unless it's DTS-HD Master Audio, but it's complicated. The point is more devices can play DD or DTS than can play FLAC, so there's no reason to transcode at all. Just mux the original unmodified audio stream into your files if you're going for max quality.

Not the Tascam TH-02, it has very terrible comfort. I mentioned the TH-02 because it was $15 before. I can't recommend it at $30 because it costs less before..
>>
>>133709119
>CD900ST
Specs are basically identical to the V6 from what I'm seeing, barring a slight reduction in wattage. What makes them better than the V6?

>TH-02
Remembering these. Impedance is weak, and I can't speak for the construction, but it's damn good for ~$30.

>>133709158
Ah. So why get a $500 wireless pair with studio quality when there are $75-125 wireless pairs?
>>
>>133709060

I would rather have DD or DTS audio because I can bitstream it to my receiver rather than decoding audio on the computer and sending a bunch of PCM channels.

Not for fidelity reasons, but because my receiver will only apply Pro Logic to stereo audio, so I want Windows to send stereo over the HDMI connection 99% of the time, and don't want to manually switch it to multi-channel in the rare case that I watch a video with a surround mix.

If windows would change the output format dynamically it wouldn't be an issue, but that would be too sensible or something.

MP3 doesn't support more than two channels of surround sound audio, which DTS and Dolby Digital/AC-3 do.

I have not tried the V6 or 7506 before. They don't have any of them where I live. I blindly impulse purchased the CD900ST and I'm happy it has forward vocals in it.
>>

Because the $75-$125 ones are shit. I still want a good pair of headphones.

Not that it matters either way, as I'm not about to buy new hardware.
>>
>>133706137
flac, in the case of anime, doesn't serve so much of a listening purpose as it does a preservation purpose. flac torrents contain what is essentially identical audio to what was on the original BD/DVD.

by downloading a flac torrent you are enabling yourself to custom choose your preferred audio codec further down the line, even if it is a hassle to do so. if you wanted to trim down the size of any anime using flac audio, it would be as simple as mkvextracting the audio track out, converting it to aac/ac3/opus at your choice bitrate, and then mkvmerging it all back together.

You can't get any closer to the original audio than copying the original DD or DTS audio stream untouched. FLAC will be a bit smaller than lossless versions of DD or DTS, but not by enough to care.

I put my v0's in my 512mb mp3 player from 2008, but on my computer I could encode it yet again but why should I even bother when I have to do that for every single thing I download? I encode it into my mp3 player because it still works and my pc has enough space at the moment (I still have unopened three boxes of wd 3tb external drives, they were cheap)

>>133709548
I don't recommend my PortaPro. It sounds too boomy and harsh. The Tascam TH-02 with HM5 pads would be great. Earphones are terrible, my ER-4PT sounds very compressed and headphones sound better.

No. I'm not really an expert. Just a bargain hunter and affordables consumer. I purchased some headphones I liked and that's basically it. But I do know a few basic things that you should or shouldn't buy. http://pastebin.com/yYYYKCV6 you can search my trip on /g/'s archive. Yes, I talk like I'm an autist. Just ignore that because that's who I am. But I'm not going to reply if you upset me.

If people want to hate on me do whatever you want, I'm just here to express if I hate the stuff I own or not. If you wanna be a bully, up to you but I won't respond after that. That's basically it. You just made me upset and I'm not posting anymore today.

HD600 and ER-4PT are the most enjoyable and more laid back headphone or earphones I own for watching anime. I think my SRS-2170 still sounds the best with sweet vocals and it's the best end-game affordable. CD900ST is just a tool for vocals and my HD600 beats it but CD900ST's vocals sounds more forward than everything. But the ER-4PT must be used without the S adapter and must have the shirt clip with some slack in the cord. The S adapter is for music, it's bad for anime because it makes characters sound compressed and very thin sounding.

>>133711069
Please bully, I'm joking. Of course I don't want to be bullied. I recommend any of the headphones listed above. Do not purchase audiophile things such as tubes, cables or amps that cost more than a magni 2 or objective 2.
>>
Jesus fuck, all this crap about headphones. Headphones are for kids living in mommy's basement. It's not just your ears involved when you are exposed to sound, it's your whole body. Your abdominal cavity responds to very low frequencies and your skull to some higher ones. Therefore no matter how much you pay for phones they are pretty useless for music, but totally useless for cinematic soundtracks with high LF content. And yes I did spend thousands of dollars on my audio setup. And the only people who can "tell the difference" between good MP3 and FLAC are the ones who pay $500 for an HDMI cable.

You're all weebs right? That probably means you like the thought of supporting Japanese companies like JVC.

Well truth be told, JVC is responsible for one of the best budget earbuds ever made. I dare any of you audio fuckboys to get a pair of Riptidz and then honestly tell me that they cant go blow-for-blow with your audiophile crap.

After breaking my first pair in, I bought 4 more sets, so I would never be caught in the headphone selection process ever again.

Riptidz is one of the worst product names I have ever heard, but they're only $6 so I guess I'll buy them and see how it works out

Earbuds definitely won't compare to a $200 pair of over-ear headphones, though.

My friends mother finds a reputable brand and sticks to it - forever. She only buys Toyotas, she only gets Dell computers, only buys logitech periphs, kellogs cereal... you get the idea. So when it comes to headphones and other little electronic tidbits, she only gets SONY's. So whenever he'd ask his mama to pick up a pair of buds for him, shed come back from the store with some sony buds. This gone on for some time now. Every time I'd go over to kick it in his room, I would always check up on his stuff, read bits of his manga collection, play a couple rounds on his rig, y'know, lazy day stuff - just this time theres 2 of us in the room, so no fapping. Anyways I would always test out the current pair of his sony buds - usually connected to his Ipod Touch, used to be a walkman - and be a little dissapointed in the sound quality. Not with these buds man.

The biggest problem with dual audio and English being the default is that those idiots also include two different sub tracks, one that only translated written signs and stuff, the other that translates everything. The first one is the default since it's supposed to run alongside English audio, and both tracks are labeled as English subs so you can't make the other sub track the default one, you have to manually change it every episode.

I think I should be terrified that some people bought this even for a moment, but the fact that JPEGs actually degrade when rendered and recompressed makes it ever so slightly understandable. But then again, nothing really excuses the belief that the compression happens on disk simply from the passage of time.

Do you people actually believe that you can hear the difference between FLAC and higher bandwidth lossy compression? 320kbps Ogg or MP3, as well as VBR Ogg and MP3 carry 99.999% of the data the human ear can actually sense. Show me one blind study/challenge of someone differentiating high bandwidth compression schemes and lossless compression. I appreciate high quality audio equipment as much as the next guy, but don't be fucking tools. FLAC is for archival, not for distribution of anime where it's a huge waste of space.

P.S. The BD itself is the archival unit; there is no excuse for ever encoding anime audio into FLAC.
