While Adam actively tried to eliminate mankind, Lilith never tried to wipe out angels, or do anything that's not standing there impaled to the cross.

The Impacts aren't actually related in anything but name. The First Impact was just Lilith crashing into Earth, the Second Impact was Adam awakening in Antarctica, and Third Impact could have potentially been a couple different things, but ended up being the merging of all human souls into the "Moon" Lilith crashed landed on Earth in.

Watching Evangelion for the first time is a really enjoyable experience, and I believe that comes from how little you're told (or shown, really) about what's really going on behind the scenes.

That lack of understanding, for example, what angels really are, ends up seriously amplifying the most bizarre moments and turns them into straight-up horror material and instilling the viewer with a feeling of dread or something higher being at play.
Leliel is a good example of this.

What I want to know is how much of that was deliberate, and why haven't we had anything similar since. Not going to even mention Rebuilds because they're fucking retarded and just drive an interesting premise into the ground for the sake of being slightly different.

They are as you'd expect, movies with unlimited budget, although that doesn't always show. While they have passable production value, they aren't like NGE at all.

While NGE built and crafted as story, Rebuild is only concerned with taking said story and twisting it to produce superficial value. After three movies the characters are basically big question marks that even for a movie don't have nearly as much character as their screentime implies.

It's best understood as a doujin-type work coming from the author himself. It's fanservice of the same kind.

I know what you mean, and that's one of my favorite aspects of EVA; the surreal horror and ambiguous nature of the disturbing scenes you're often presented with. I assume much of it was very deliberate as Anno wrote out clear explanations for those scenes prior to production, and then cut out the details to place the viewer in the same unsettling position the characters were in.

You used Leliel as an example. According to an interview with someone who worked on the show (I can try to find it if you're interested) they originally made it blatantly obvious that Leliel was communicating with Shinji, but found that they didn't like how unsubtle it was. So, they decided to make the scene more surreal and have Leliel represented by a young Shinji in a black and white shirt to emphasize the alien incomprehensibility of the Angels.

The Angel stuff is just a plot device. The actual story distilled to its core is Shinji coming to terms with himself. Everything else is just dressing, not that it's unimportant but that it should only be understood through it's relation to the core story.
