I don't really know how the early-scan scene works, but my impression was that WSJ gets delivered to stores a few days early, and any old employee pockets an extra copy and scans it back home. In most cases it would be as easy as making 3 or 4 phone calls. You would be able to hide it if you knew your way around computers, but Japanese people typically don't.

They were being too greedy. In the rush to be the first scanlation site to publish, they were posting the chapters as early as possible. When scanlations go up 4-5 hours after the first shipment of printed magazines go out, it's a lot easier to track down the source. It's a lot fewer stores and delivery men to check when you just need to check to see who would have access in the first several hours after shipment, instead of all the stores that have it a day beforehand.

Mangapanda and the like are out for the $$$$. First site to publish a chapter gets everyone going to it to read the chapter. More people going to site = more ad $$$$. Waiting a couple days means everyone else reads the chapter somewhere else first which equals less ad $$$$.

For example, there are more scanlation groups for One Piece than Mangapanda or Niggastream. A huge amount of people either read one of those, or wait for the official release, rather than seek out the other alternatives that are out a day or two after MP and MS. MP and MS don't want to be in that same position.

The internet is getting shittier with every day. I will always curse the time when the retarded mainstream masses started to use it due to Fecesbook and phones.

I watched it first, but found it more enjoyable than the manga.

Hawk and Melodias' VA's are fucking amazing (but the dub is bad even by dub standards), and though it has occasionally spotty animation, does a great job of condensing the first 100 chapters with very few things missing. Definitely worth the watch.

Meanwhile 2ch spoiler threads have pointed at english scanlation sites on and off for years, and in the last year or so some branch of the Japanese government did a big study on anime/manga piracy to see how things stood. English scanlation sites were by no means ignored. And for years now the publishers have sent DMCA takedown requests to Google to get them to remove results for various scanlation sites, as well as having sent various C&D, DMCA take downs, and probably other legal threats to the big aggregators.

tl;dr: Jap publishers aren't idiots, they damn well know about scanlations and fansubs. They just aren't being stupid in how they go after them.
