It's because in Japan bikini briefs are considered more sexy than thongs and G-strings. It seems weird at first until you realize that the Japanese didn't really wear underwear, except for fundoshi, until they came into contact with Europeans and it was then subsequently fetishized. Also, in Japan thongs are considered to be garments for prostitutes mainly. That is slowly changing, however.
