So I'm currently studying Japanese at one of the top Tokyo universities.

Last term I had four courses: comprehesive which consisted of memorising a textbook chapter per night and then doing mind numbing "games" for 3 hours, in between being retaught the chapter we had already learnt and had been tested on first thing. This course completely ignored kanji, yet worked through N5/4. The next course was kanji, which consisted of being given a random list of about 50 words to memorise and learn to write each week, with no instruction as to radicals, stroke order or any sensical kanji learning order. Note, these words had no relation to the comprehensive course. The last two "theme" courses consisted of lists of theme words to memorise each week, also with random kanji.

This term: more comprehensive, where we work through a textbook in class. Fair enough, but it's at a much slower pace than I could do it by myself. This course also expects you to know kanji that wasn't taught in the previous comprehensive course. More theme classes, all as useless as last term.

In additon, as it is a university, there are advanced students taking beginner/lower intermediate classes just for the credits. This means that everyone taking the correct level is left feeling dumb and too shy to speak out in class. Not a great learning atmosphere.

Honestly, I was really close to not coming back for my second term. My university is costing double what a regular language school would. I really wish I had just gone to a regular school.

I took a language course for a different language previously in my home country at university. We spent the classes going through level appropriate native videos, audio files and working through the textbook. The class moved at a good pace.

Has anyone else taken a university course here in Japan and felt the same way? Am I just expecting too much?

I'm (trying to) learn Kanji by vocab, but sometimes I feel that the don't get the right amount of words for this, sometimes it seens too few, and sometimes to much. (If something like this exists)

For example I list like 50 words that use 「日」Kanji and feel odd by using like 4 for 「五」it makes me feel weird, (one character have tons~ of words, and some almost to none), (I'm doing a Anki core, to some words are good, but I cant remember some because I don't even know all Kanji in the expression)

I know that is good to take real Japanese media (I watch anime read manga, but idk some ppl says that its not a good viable method of adquiring vocab)to get the frequent words, but I only know NHK, Asahi and Nikkei (Can someone recommend something more or maybe something more begineer friendly)?

So, how to know if I'm good enough in a certain character to going progress to other?

Go out, meet Japanese people, talk to people in Japanese etc.
What you do in school is almost irrelevant in comparison.

If I was in Japan my strategy for learning Japanese would be, spend my mornings grinding vocab because there's just so many fucking words you need to know. Then I'd spend afternoons and evenings out and about, talking to anyone who's willing to talk to me, which should be a lot of people because you're an exotic gaijin and if nothing else they want to practice their English on you.

Why finding raw manga is so much harder than scanlations? It's never a problem with games and anime but finding manga I want to read is always such a pain in the butt.

Pretty much the only difference between /r/learnjapanese and DJT is that DJT generally prefers tae kim while that sub generally prefers Genki. The general rationale for tae kim is very commonly posted so you can make up your own mind whether you prefer one or the other.

The only person I can think of that has much say from reddit that disagrees with using VNs for reading practice is OfficerKondo, but that's forgiven because he hates RTK so his worldview is consistent.

After 10 years of English (ages 6-16) I was absolutely fluent, don't worry. Even after 5-6 years (keep in mind, we're talking ages 6-12 here) I could communicate just fine in English. And my only source of learning has been using the language for games and reading/posting on the internet, no studying.

How many words do you guys mine a day?

I was wondering if I should limit myself to mining say 20 words from reading that day and before going to sleep, do those cards in Anki and repeat the next day. So my memory for those words will be fresh and I can remember exactly how I got them from the part in the VN. Or does it matter?

I have a backlog of 200 words that I have in Anki right now that I can finish in 10 days. Wondering if I should change up my method to help retention.

I know the example you posted might not be that guilty in this respect, but a lot of what makes simple dialogue so seemingly simple is conceptually some of the most finnicky and complex aspects of the language.

You know, like colloqualisms, contractions, ellipses, indirect references, idiosyncratic speech patterns, intentional omissions (and/or hanging particles, unfinished sentences), equivocations, double entendres, insinuations, direct assertion avoidance, not to mention the way sentence patterns can become simultaneously more and more ambiguous and more and more complex as someone begins by struggling to articulate exactly what they want to say and eventually arrives at an appropriate determination by retroactively modifying the earlier clauses (there's probably a precise lingusitic term for this somewhere but I can't be bothered).

Apparently I've been pronouncing the ら行 (らりるれろ) wrong all of this time. When I said ゆるゆり, a Japanese native said that he heard it as ゆうゆい. This is likely because I'm so used to pronouncing it "Yuru Yuri".

Why do people hate Anki? This is how you learn languages in the classroom, you are given a list of words and you memorize them and their meanings. Do you guys really think that by reading random texts and googling words, you will remember them? Especially with Japanese/Chinese where you have to remember not just the meaning associated with the word, but also the reading of kanji.

Reading is helpful more for grammar and to get a feel of the language than for vocabulary. If anything, stuff like Tae Kim is not necessary if you read or listen a lot.

The lure of "reading only" is too tempting.

I did it myself, and I still think it can be done, but you have to read a _lot_, and not just read and look up words, I think you still have to treat words you encounter while reading as if they popped up in an anki deck but you're just studying them out in the wild instead of in a deck.
But again, I think you really have to do a shit ton of reading for it to work well.

I think I realized for most of us anki is probably just the most reliable method. It also gives you a good way to gauge yourself so you really know if you're slacking off or not.

My advice to anyone who can't keep up with anki or thinks it's too hard is to just set everything to zero (new cards and reviews per day) and handle it manually via the custom study, so you pick each session how much you want to do.
That way you won't get swamped if you get behind. I know this isn't the best idea, but it's better than getting frustrated and dropping anki altogether.

In my opinion, the wise thing to do with anki is to keep it at a slow pace (10 new cards a day) and just read a lot. 10 new cards a day will pretty much never end up with too many reviews, but it's still respectable progress. Combine that with reading and you've got a relaxed study pace that has all the benefits of reading a lot, without the drawbacks of not doing anki.

Only problems I've seen so far is that I have 1,400 mined cards waiting for me to get to them. 20-30 new cards a day would absolutely be much better. But, it'd also be a lot more mind-numbing flashcards. It's a game of balancing making progress, while also not boring yourself to death.

I personally would add "I guess" or "You could say" to this to account for the というか. I don't know what the other guy was saying about this (and the next sentence) being an incomplete sentence, as it is a complete thought. I guess he was trolling, unless it is one of those "what's the definition of a sentence" semantics and the guy considers several ideas to all count as one sentence even though in English they are not. Maybe he a native speaker of a foreign language and thus has a foreign mind set about sentence boundaries. But anyways
