Sorry if this is posted in the guide, but I couldn't find it anywhere. Is there a site or program that will output the correct stroke order in .gifs like this one? http://www.sp.cis.iwate-u.ac.jp/icampus/u/akanji.jsp Except, rather than adding in each stroke in its entirety, it draws it in so that one can be sure of the direction of the strokes as well? I have a decent idea of the correct directions, but I'd like to be certain.

What I do is just learn how to say the word, and register the rough meaning along with it when doing my reps. Then when I encounter said word while reading or listening I'll recall what it means.

I can't imagine learning the translation every time, especially when most words classed as 'verbal nouns' on anki don't have a straight translation.

Working through conditionals at the moment, and I came across this:

先生だと、きっと年上なんじゃないですか?
If he's a teacher, he must be older for sure, right?

The inclusion of じゃない is what's throwing me off here. Could someone help explain this to me? I thought it would mean something closer to "if he's a teacher, he mustn't be older for sure, right?" even though that's a bit awkward.
>>
>>133619140
It's like saying 'right?' or 'isn't it?'
>>
>>133619140
Think of じゃない as "don't you think?" It's a negative rhetorical.
>>
>>133619140
If you translate
先生だと、きっと年上なんじゃないですか?
Into: If he's a teeacher, he must be older for sure, isn't that right?
It'd be like expressing the following:
先生だと、きっと年上です。そうじゃないですか?
>>
>>133619275
Oh hey, that's a really good way to think about it. Thanks.

Do you guys get overly affected by anime? After finishing Glass Mask I want to go see a play or at least read the script of one. I wanted to go see an orchestra and learn how to play the piano after watching Nodame Cantabile and I wanted to see a ballet after Princess Tutu. Of course, I never end up doing any of these things because I would have to leave the house.

One time after finishing a Gundam series I wanted to become an aeronautical engineer.

I wish I could become passionate about something in my life.

I wonder if we appear fluent to Japanese people, when we email short messages like:
どちらでもいいですよ
It's short, and is practically a staple sentence that any Japanese person would say. So, if we just send a sentence like that... I would if, the receiver would extrapolate us to be fluent.
For example, if I emailed someone in Japanese
>Do you prefer cats or dogs?
And they replied
>I like them both.
I would definitely think they're like, fluent, even if they would have said "When dogs comes to loud cat but quieter slight preference".

Hey DJT, I've finally motivated myself to actually try and learn Japanese today.

So I've been using realkana for the past few hours, trying to memorize Hiragana. But I'm not sure what to do exactly.

Am I supposed to memorize the hiragana first, or the pronunciation of it first?
>>
>>133621157

Water is always my true lover, and is the perfect one for me. Its up to me for being happy and water keeps me healthy. I love water and being happy, alcohol is just emulating my water and happiness. Yep, learned riichi mahjong after watching Akagi and Saki. Still would have been playing it with local weeb friends if they didn't move out of town one after another. Tried learning igo after Hikaru no Go but it was like chess on crack and I am terrible at keeping track of multiple things at once so I gave up. Tsumego are fun litle things though, I enjoy solving them from time to time.
Also tried learning guitar after watching Beck but gave up. I've found a very convinient line somewhere - "Truly great musicians often don't learn to play musical instruments at all because they are disgusted by their ineptitude while learning and stop before they can git gud". I do want to learn some musical instrument after "finishing" with japanese though.
Started a first kendo club in my city after watching Bamboo Blade. We had to ask trainers from a neighbouring town to come over and hold full day seminars once a month and train independently in the meantime. The club is going strong for 7th year now, people pass their dan exams, all that jazz. Even made it to the nationals once. Regrettably I had to stop training due to illness a couple of years ago.
I now realise that anime had an unexpectedly positive influence on my life. New hobbies, new experiences, new friends. Who would have thunk.

So I'm currently studying Japanese at one of the top Tokyo universities.

Last term I had four courses: comprehesive which consisted of memorising a textbook chapter per night and then doing mind numbing "games" for 3 hours, in between being retaught the chapter we had already learnt and had been tested on first thing. This course completely ignored kanji, yet worked through N5/4. The next course was kanji, which consisted of being given a random list of about 50 words to memorise and learn to write each week, with no instruction as to radicals, stroke order or any sensical kanji learning order. Note, these words had no relation to the comprehensive course. The last two "theme" courses consisted of lists of theme words to memorise each week, also with random kanji.

This term: more comprehensive, where we work through a textbook in class. Fair enough, but it's at a much slower pace than I could do it by myself. This course also expects you to know kanji that wasn't taught in the previous comprehensive course. More theme classes, all as useless as last term.

In additon, as it is a university, there are advanced students taking beginner/lower intermediate classes just for the credits. This means that everyone taking the correct level is left feeling dumb and too shy to speak out in class. Not a great learning atmosphere.

Honestly, I was really close to not coming back for my second term. My university is costing double what a regular language school would. I really wish I had just gone to a regular school.

I took a language course for a different language previously in my home country at university. We spent the classes going through level appropriate native videos, audio files and working through the textbook. The class moved at a good pace.

Has anyone else taken a university course here in Japan and felt the same way? Am I just expecting too much?

You have to consider that when you come here you're taking learning advice from NEETs. Not the best idea. They go for Tae Kim because it's free and simple.
>>
>>133629271
Genki can also be free. The problem with Genki is that it's disruptive to the study flow of most self-learners. Its quality is a little higher than Tae Kim aside from that, but it's not enough to make up for it.
>>
>>133629295
>disruptive to the study flow
Really?
>>
>>133629330
Ask a neet whose first material was genki and went in blind.
>>
>>133629271

>NEETs

As compared to college students who spend two years at a sub-JLPT N3 level?

A NEET is perfectly capable of pirating Genki. Furthermore, consider the pressure that these topics put on people to read native material. If Tae Kim wasn't going to get you to a point where you could get started on reading, we wouldn't recommend it.

Grammar guides are something that you should get through quickly. Then, you start reading native material, and use the grammar guide as a reference when you don't understand something. Tae Kim + DoJG (don't use it as a text book; use it as a reference when you don't understand something) is just what a serious learner needs.

Someone posted the very last exercise in Genki 2 the other day. I used Tae Kim to learn my grammar, and then started reading native material, and I can tell you that it was embarrassingly simple, beneath anything that you'd encounter in real Japanese. So trust me, Tae Kim is fine.

Guys... why do I keep putting off studying? At first, in high school, I learned all the kana, a few hundred words, and basic grammar, then stopped. After high school I thought I got my act together and learned about a thousand words, most of them from the core6k deck, but stopped again. Then I learned the Yotsuba&! deck, read it, felt really good and thought I finally got it together and would learn Japanese... then I went to 2chan and I couldn't understand them and I stopped again out of depression. Then I started AGAIN and learned a few hundred kanji, another few hundred words, signed up at LingQ and learned a few hundred more words... then I stopped again after my subscription ended.

It's not even that studying is boring, I love studying, I just... why do I keep stopping? I've been at this for over 8 years now, guys. I'm disappointed in myself. Don't become like me, don't put it off again and again. I could have learned so much Japanese, maybe even a few more languages by now. But instead I'm still N5, MAYBE N4 level... I'm the worst to come out of /DJT/.

I'll definitely do it this time, wish me luck guys! I CAN LEARN JAPANESE! がんばれ!

And this is why you absolutely never skip a day.

A day turns into two days, which turns into a week, which turns into a habit of procrastination, which turns into stopping altogether.

That's the best advice that I have to give you. Don't skip days. Ever. Do whatever you need to do to incorporate Japanese into your schedule. Your Japanese studies depend on you getting shit done TODAY.

Goddamn.

Anon, seriously: Go download Hanahira and Chiitrans Lite right this second. Read that shit for at least an hour every day until you've finished it. Actively try to remember words that you encounter, and if you don't understand the grammar, reference DoJG. Attempt to read from the game itself before using any dictionary tools provided by the text hooker.

>But it's sooo hard!

Suck it up. You're not going to be perfect at first. That comes later.

>It's boring!

Grab a more interesting-looking VN, then. Power through that instead.

>The mean people on DJT will laugh at me for using a text hooker.

Fuck them. Are you looking to impress some autist, or are you looking to learn Japanese? If you care about the former, you really shouldn't. At any rate, I'm sure that even those autists would agree that using a text hooker is better than what you're doing right now.

>What do I do after I finish?

You get through another VN.
>>
>>133630940
>>The mean people on DJT will laugh at me for using a text hooker.
wut? Why would anyone frown on texthooker usage? I mean you should neck yourself if you can't do without it after years of reading vns back to back, but at the start it saves a shitload of time.

>>
>>133631051

Some anons like to point out that it's possible to use it as a crutch, as if that's decisive evidence that you WILL use it as a crutch. Also, they claim that if you're making use of any tools to assist, you're not actually reading Japanese.

Yes, it's not a terribly rational argument, but notice that I called them "autists".
>>
>>133631243
I'm an autist and I don't find it offensive when you call belligerent shitheads autistic, but I really wish that we could get away with insulting them using the term aspergers or aspie like they are.
>>
>>133631324
Oh yeah, "sperging" exists, we should use that more often.
>>
>>133631324

Lots of people on this site have autism, and the term is commonly used as an insult. Looking into semantics for reasons to be offended is a bad habit. Look at intent instead.

At any rate, autists who aren't well adjusted to their disorder tend to be very tunnel-visioned and belligerent, so the insult fits.

There are some people who have seen screenshots of machine translators and think that is what text hookers are. Others think that being able to instantly look up a word is a bad thing and they would rather look everything up by radical search or drawing them.

How do people manage to memorize all the grammar concepts on Tae Kim at once?

>>
>>133633142

>>
>>133633142
You don't, it gets reinforced when you come across them while consuming native material (i.e.: chinese cartoons)

>>133633176

>>
>>133633176

Don't try to memorize 100% of it flawlessly via the grammar guide. This is a common beginner's mistake. Not only is it an inefficient use of your time, it also doesn't prepare the learner as well as they'd hoped, since real Japanese isn't as neat and clean as what the grammar guide gives you.

It's far more efficient to quickly finish the grammar guide and then go in with whatever you happen to know. When you don't understand something, use the grammar guide as a reference. I actually recommend looking to DoJG for this part instead of Tae Kim. Through a mixture of checking the guides and raw experience, you'll gain an intuitive grasp on grammar.
>>
>>133633304
I agree, by experiencing actual material, you'll learn grammar more easily because it'll have actual meaning, plus, the context will help you recall and solidify the meaning.
頑張って!

A config like that is going to be inferior to running MPC+MadVR. If you're going to recommend such a simple config, at least tell him to use opengl-hq (preset configuration of opengl with various high quality settings enabled by default meaning you don't have to manually specify them in the config file - basically the "I want high quality but I'm too lazy to read the manual" setting).

Why use hardware decoding? Back when I used to use Windows, I'm pretty sure all the MPC-HC configuration guides told you not to use it, and most of the mpv configs I've seen posted have it explicitly disabled.
>>

>Back when I used to use Windows, I'm pretty sure all the MPC-HC configuration guides told you not to use it
Because gpu driver hardware video decoding on windows is almost always default configured to fuck up colors/levels instead of keep them the same.

On linux you don't have that problem.

>Why use hardware decoding?

Why /not/ use hardware decoding? Lower CPU usage, work put onto an architecture that's more efficient at it.

It takes like 10-15 minutes. It's really not tedious at all. Just put some (preferably instrumental) music on and write them out while you're listening to it. It's over in no time.

Alright, thanks. I actually did have it enabled for a while but I disabled it after seeing so many other config files with it disabled. I figured there must be some reason people weren't using it.

Any particular reason you use vdpau over vaapi?

>Any particular reason you use vdpau over vaapi?

https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/blob/master/DOCS/man/vo.rst

vaapi

Intel VA API video output driver with support for hardware decoding. Note that there is absolutely no reason to use this, other than wanting to use hardware decoding to save power on laptops, or possibly preventing video tearing with some setups.

Note

This driver is for compatibility with crappy systems. You can use vaapi hardware decoding with --vo=opengl too.
>>
>>133637594
Forgot this.

The vaapi mode, if used with --vo=opengl, requires Mesa 11 and most likely works with Intel GPUs only.
>>
>>133637507
It's really not if you're sensible about it. If 10 a day is really too much, then just do 5. Even doing a small amount like that will be beneficial and it barely takes any time at all.

Just been digging through the /g/ archive. It seems like there are negative repercussions to using hardware decoding in that it will worsen the results of or entirely prevent the use of certain software filters.

>>I always thought hardware decoding was superior if you had the hardware for it.
>That depends. You cannot use hardware decoding with software filters for example. So if you plan on using deband.glsl, vapoursynth or other stuff like that it will fuck up. If you search it up it'll tell you why in more detail.
>If you don't use software filters at all, then yes, it'll be faster in most cases as far as I know.

>The only problem is that VDPAU does its own conversion to RGB, which means that ‘cscale’ doesn't get applied at all, and ‘deband.glsl’ only applies after chroma upscaling (which worsens the result, meaning you get more chroma banding)
>Furthermore, vdpau can't do some forms of YUV->RGB conversion at all, it can only do ones based on a matrix (we still generate the matrix ourselves, though, so you can rely on that being correct). As a counter-example, it can't handle BT.2020-CL.

>>133638268
That's more like upper beginner than intermediate. You have to read a bit more to get past the beginner stage. Of course, these divisions are arbitrary, I'm just describing them how I think of them.
>>
>>133638323
I think it would be better to stop mining than to stop reading. You don't have to mine every word you see, specially if you have a huge backlog of words already. Just try reading without thinking of mining for a while.
>>
>>133638323
You can see the problem, but you can't see the obvious solution that is not mining so much? Just read the word out loud and move on. You'll get to it eventually.

Bullshit for many reasons. Pic related is the difference between hardware and software decoding with vo=opengl:deband

As for software filters, you're absolutely only using those if you already have very much CPU to spare.

They didn't? Meanings of Hanzi are already divergent as fuck. Considering Japan imported them quite early what you perceive as mutational might in many cases be them using an earlier meaning.

Results:

vdpau debands relatively less by default because vdpau has already converted to RGB. Keep reading.

chroma-luma colorspaces don't perfectly correspond to RGB. The best chroma-luma colorspace for storing RGB data is YCgCo, which only needs two extra bits per channel in order to losslessly store the original data. It also decorrelates chroma from luma Extremly Well; much, much better than YUV, where red and black share the same luma.

When you convert 8-bit YUV data to RGB, the dynamic range of the signal is increased. If the YUV data wasn't dithered or was compressed (hint: everything you watched was compressed), this widens the distance in intensity between bands.

You need to increase deband-threshold to compensate for the "premature" "expansion" of the video signal. That's all.

/g/ anon doesn't really know what he's talking about as per typical.

A lot of the kanji are literally the same as chinese characters

If you grow up studying chinese then you would know at least 3000 or something Chinese characters that are the same as Kanji

Some Kanji are also pronounced the same as some Chinese characters
Example: 三 (three) is read as "san" in both Chinese and Japanese

The downside is that if you decide to learn both language at once (no idea why you would but I know a friend who is), chinese characters and kanji will confuse the hell out of you
Example: 雪 is read as "xue" in chink but "yuki" in japanese

Pretty much. Take the northern (heavily influenced by a wide array of different dialects and of classical Chinese) "written standard colloquial" of 1900~. Strip it of "dialectal features" and decide by consensus of what the proper pronunciation and grammar of it should be.
>>
>>133639578

While we're on this topic, why do some kanji use simplified chinese writings? For example, 会う
>>
>>133639534

My language doesn't really differentiate those and it's never been a problem here. We just say hand fingers or foot fingers when there might be some confusion. In fact, we almost always say foot fingers when referring to toes and just fingers when referring to hand fingers so there's very little chance for ambiguity to arise. The あし thing really is weird though.

As for surgeons, I'm sure they have much more detailed anatomical jargon so you don't have to worry about them cutting off the wrong bits of your body. They'll make sure to distinguish between your 腿, your 膝, your 脛, your
足首 and your 足.

Prosody differs a lot. (rhythm of speech, how tones* are expressed, stress etc,,)

Grammar will vary with local version of some very core function words instead of the standard ones. Different preferences and usage of constructions. Local sentence ending particles.

Even if so, the Japanese think so. Look up names with that letter and you'll see エ -sounds used. Of the top of my head, look at Mesut Özil's katakana (the Turkish/German Ö is the same pronunciation as the Swedish one)

Yep. お for example can go as far as ɒ, sometimes I hear あ pronounced like ʌ for some reason, etc.

Really the graph should be three dimensional so that ʌ doesn't look so close to ɔ, but that's beside the point. (ʌ is a very neutral sound, sounding like ɜ)

what does /a/ think of wanikani? So far it's a pretty good method to learning kanji and radicals.
>>
>>133644378
It ends before you know enough to be competent so you will need to start anki at the end, and therefore you wasted your time doing wanikani instead of anki. Also, it cost money.
>>
>>133644378
Worse than not studying kanji.

>>133644378
Artificially slows you down. Takes over a year to do like 5-6k words or some shit.

It might be good for some people but Anki is free and doesn't limit you.
>>
Does anyone have a problem with anki combining vocab with the same fronts in different decks?

I have a 意地 card in one deck meaning "willpower; pride" and today I added a 意地 card in a different deck meaning "appetite; desire; greed", but now the deck with the card thats supposed to say willpower is saying appetite etc, shit's pretty annoying and keeps happening, is there a way to stop this?
>>
>>133644530
Change the card type of one of the decks and it should stop
>>
>>133644378
You can get something much much better for free, so it's a waste of money. Unless you think the cute interface and the minimal effort it will save you are worth your money stay away from it. Its biggest offense is how it limits you to its snail pace and narrow content while wooing you into believing you're learning efficiently.
>>
>>133639031
Are you implying 95% isn't good enough
>>
>>133644446
There's a wanikani deck you can use on anki, if you want. Right now they only have 6,000 words or so, which isn't enough, so you'll need to start a mining deck. I guess, it's not strictly a waste of time or anything, it's just not something I'd want to do - use wanikanji for a year and then switch to anki, instead of usnig anki in the fist place.

Is there any way to remember vocabulary pronounciation?

Currently using Anki Core 2k+6k, I can recognise what a word means when I see it but I forget how to pronounce it (especially with the "2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9 things" bullshit that's different from the number's pronounciation).

Currently adding 10 new cards per day in Anki setting, but still too much for me, I just forget things... How does everyone do it?
>>
>>133644309
Good on you m8 keep it up. I wouldn't say you're finished until all those words are in the mature bracket with 90%+ retention though. But you'll get there soon enough.

I meant more "how to spell it" rather than "how to pronounce it", actually, sorry. English isn't my first language.

things like 3 being さん but "3 things" being みっつ
>>
>>133644854
Do them over and over again. The number bullshit isn't hard if you go over them again and again for a few days it eventually just sticks.

When I first learn words I usually try a mnemonic, eventually I see the Kanji again and just start to remember the reading.
>>
>>133644947
>things like 3 being さん but "3 things" being みっつ
Oh, you get over that.
>>
>>133644947
Just have to cram it into your head and hope for the best. When you get further along and can watch raw anime or read books or whatever, these things will come a bit more naturally.
>>
>>133644854
>the "2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9 things"
Delete or suspend those. They confuse everybody and they're extremely quick and easy to pick up through actual exposure. Learn just ひとつ, ふたつ and みっつ and you're good for the time being.

As for the other words, I don't know how well this will work for you, but try saying them out loud as you see them, that really helps me. You don't have to say it very loudly, just enough to hear your own voice.
>>
>>133644378
Not a bad resource if you want to pace yourself and have the money to spare.
Definitely not comprehensive and surprisingly missing some really common stuff, but I find that having to type helps my retention and the mnemonics for the kanji are good for the most part.
It's true that you will have to supplement it with Anki if you want to get somewhere, though. It's also not very effective for non-beginners as you'll be bored to death getting to a level where most things are new to you.

>>133644494
>>133644576
>Artificially slows you down.

Technically over 100 vocab words every 8 days if you go at the maximum pace. That's faster than the people here who say they do 10 new cards a day on Anki.
>>
>>133644947
>I meant more "how to spell it" rather than "how to pronounce it"
There's not much of a difference in Japanese. If you know one you know the other and vice-versa.
>>
>>133644857
Yeah, I'm going to keep reviewing the cards I've done until that happens.

What I think I'll do when I reach that point is remove any cards that I forget and add them to the mining deck that I'm going to start.
>>
>>133645028
>Technically over 100 vocab words every 8 days if you go at the maximum pace. That's faster than the people here who say they do 10 new cards a day on Anki.
It still artificially limits you which is bullshit.
>>
>>133645028
Your point? I do 30-50 vocab cards a day, like I said it artificially slows you down. You can do 12 vocab cards a day in anki and accomplish the same thing.

If people need the feeling of structure or that 'they're paying for it so they have to do it' then it's probably good for them.
>>
>>133644309
Well done. Are you reading yet? You should be.

But my 10 new vocab cards carry a guaranteed 2-3 new kanji, even into 2,700 kanji, which is a faster kanji pace than wanikani. D-don't judge me.

>Technically over 100 vocab words every 8 days if you go at the maximum pace. That's faster than the people here who say they do 10 new cards a day on Anki.
Most people do 20+ (160+ words every 8 days).

I'm just saying some people, of which we have examples in this thread, might not find the pacing to be too slow for them. That makes the argument that that's a negative irrelevant for those cases in particular.

Personally, I am using it and about two months ago started doing 40-50 words a day on Anki on the side as well. I still found the structure helpful as a beginner, although I'll be dropping it once my subscription expires.

You paid to avoid the initial trouble of setting up anki and making yourself a learning schedule. In the end you still had to do it anyway though, so I rephrase that:

Already finished a decent amount of manga. I think I'll be stuck with SoL manga for a (long) while due to the sheer amount of vocabulary I have to memorise.

Language learning really puts into perspective how much fun it is for a kid to read and learn in his native language as he grows up.
>>

>>133645919
Don't forget that a modern child, especially, will have listened to a LOOOOT of voices way before they read, I mean naturally reading expands their vocabulary but I bet the huge majority of it comes from parents, teachers, and TV.
>>
>>133645919
If you want to make faster progress you'd be better off reading stuff that's more wordy and less dialog-y than manga. At least read LN's and VN's that have narration. Reading stuff on the internet like news, wikipedia articles, blogs and stuff also makes for a good change of pace. Reading books is also not really that impossible, you're just going to rely on the dictionary a lot. If you keep reading only SoL manga you'll trap yourself in a bubble and other stuff will never get easier because you won't come in contact with different vocab. Reading really hard stuff is good for you.

you are in the beginner stage of reading: being slow at grammar AND not knowing many words. That's FULL dekinai because it means you incompetent with heavy assistance.
intermediate stage is reading and understanding grammar easily but being held back by vocabulary; due to guessing vocab meanings, isn't totally incompetent. half dekinai.
advanced stage is knowing both grammar and vocab and reading easily. full... DEKIRU

Read more, of course. More you read, faster and easier you read. Many legends of people who read VNs for a year or two, then pick up a LN like Oreimo or Kino no Tabi and read it as if it were their native language. Though, Kino no Tabi may have enough hard vocab to struggle even those. In that case, read more.
>>
>>133646203
