The struggle of finding yourself makes for a great story. You can involve the people you want, and for Rei it's especially great since Rei has another, different reason for being puzzled.

It's not just teenage angst with Rei, but she's seen and experienced some bad shit that'd give any philosopher something to think about.

I found her story to be great since the answers were legitimately hard to find. But Rei manages to find them in the end, and that was really great.

No matter how you look at it, that is a good thing. Because Rei came through in NGE, and her story was put on paper in a way that didn't "steal the show". In the end, you wanted more because just like you said, and I agree with - there was so much potential here. There could be more.

That in itself goes a long way in validating Rei for perhaps not a MC-role, but a larger role in general.

Rei dies, but who is Rei 3? She's Rei Ayanami. In a new clone body.

Not only would it work, it could be expanded upon and you could have at least 3+ more scenes where Rei meets her past and a discrepancy or connection is made clear.
