There is way too much hype for it to go unresolved. And Kubo did deliver on the VLs during the HM arc. The suspected VLs Starrk, Barragan and Halibel as well as the VL killer Ulquiorra were all savagely strong.
There are too many fighters currently standing on the field and we've seen random nameless Quincies with the Sternritter in the palace before. There are also too many loose threads for Bleach to end any time in the near future. It may have 2-4 years left.

Both swords look similar because of spiritual heritage.
We know that Shinigami can take swords from others, and kind of shape them to their spirit afterward.

One belongs to the mother, the other to the daughter.

Mother dies, Shunsui loves her, takes her sword. Also, somehow Mother makes Shunsui promise to take the sword from the Daughter whenever she becomes a Shinigami to keep her away from fighting, or because she knows that Daughter's sword power could be similar to hers, and wants her to avoid something tragic as Mother's bankai is (and indeed, both spirits are quite similar).

Then, Daughter becomes a Shinigami, Shunsui takes her under his wing and takes the sword away, now he has both swords.

Yeah but we've been told/shown repeatedly that any amount of power from a zanpakutou comes from practice and communicating with the spirit via meditation, or cheating and using Urahara's doll. Getting her zan back now ought to be no better than waking her sword up for the first time. I know Kubo will probably have some excuse to sidestep all that, but it just seems like this wasn't an especially well thought out twist.
