Will CGI animation ever not suck?
I'm so fucking torn between the first and second OP. sooo good
Nice bait thread, it seems you're learning.
> Over half the time all the characters transition from handdrawn to clunky out-of-place CG and then back again, rinse and repeat
Drives me up the fucking wall.
I would say they got dancing and mecha covered.
Jurassic Park still looks good after 22 years.
I don't understand why this technology is so unavailable to everyone at this point.
It simply has to be budget. X amount of dollar gets you Y amount of aesthetics. They simply don't have the money for Jurassic Park tier CG.
As far as tech is concerned it might be fine. But it was not aesthetically pleasing.
That's just the ED, they put a lot of effort into that. not representative.
The shows themselves are
>mostly low-budget 2D animation
>frequent use of stock 3D transformations and attacks
>also, simple stories for little girls
>I'd much rather prefer a hand-drawn mech fight scene.
Everyone would, as long as it's obviously well animated.
MJP still looked good and had good animation
MJP has the problem of bad framing. "Camera" is too lose to the action. Mechanically, it looks great though.
>simple stories for little girls
No, because even if the models are good, the animators dont know how to animate in cgi, the rigs have glaring issues with how the weights were painted, the shaders never match the 2D elements, and the compositing is full of QUALITY.
Every example posted in these threads has these, and only people with poor eye sight who dont know what they are looking at think the shit looks good.
>the shaders never match the 2D elements
That problem doesn't exist if it's full 3D.
And the problem exists in 2D too, when they do some scene transitions
That's what I was saying about the framing.
No, as it stands now it's only for mech shit.
And even that looks like ass. Good looking CGI exists but I doubt it costs much less than just animating it 2D in the first place and it kind of defeats the purpose.
I'm surprised no one has posted this yet, it had a decent art style and animations even if the show itself was generic as fuck.
>The character designs influence the writing
>2D is still superior.
Then why does so much 2d look terrible?
Production values are much more important than the method.
>kind of defeats the purpose
Or perhaps the studios want the 3DCG because it's simply too taxing to draw some of the things they want to display?
Anime-style hair is still the biggest issue.
Either it's flat sheets that sometimes fail shading, sonic-spikes or lobes of jelly.
Why don't CGI animators just use game engines to render their content? I see a lot of progress in good looking animated graphics coming from realtime rendering in game engines but not much from software like Max and Maya.
That pretty much sums up the entirety of CG as I see it right now.
It's way too early for it to look any good other than mecha fights. Most studios don't even try with their CG and it just looks like trash. See: That one episode of mekakucity actors where they had a CG opening.
I'd much rather have QUALITY 2d than shit CG
it's supposed to support my original point. that it's hardly anime at all.
my guess would be that offline renderers offer more non-developer customization via shittons of plugins/modules while game engines need programmers to do more fundamental changes.
CG is even more budget sensitive than 2D sadly.
As far as a pure CG show goes, Sidonia might be the best at the moment.. but as tech improves, it might eventually be able to replicate the 2d look more successfully.
>See: That one episode of mekakucity actors where they had a CG opening.
that was shaft doing shaft things.
I.e. they ran out of time and probably just released the CGI scene reference in place of the actual drawn content or some shit like that.
the future will show if the same quality is ever reached.
I don't really believe so, as I think all the fluidity and charm of 2d animation is not reachable by 3d, especially when it comes to characters,
but maybe I will be proven wrong.
For now it sucks, even mecha animation.
To be honest a lot of 2d mecha animation sucks too.
But some scenes transcend and reach a godlike level of quality and awesomeness, which will be hard to beat with 3D the way it is used now.
Yeah, I suppose but I mean it is fairly decent even for chibi, it was still just a TV anime so they sort of had to use chibi if they wanted to keep to their budget at all.
I don't really think the chibi thing really detracted from the show at all, it was also pretty awesome seeing each girls chibi form if you didn't read spoilers before hand.
Game engines are actually fairly shit in CGI terms, Most modern games relies on a ton of action happening on screen and special effects to distract the player, the models and animations themselves tend to be put on the side.
take the transition from cel animation to the digital process. took a decade to get us to the current point.
And that was just doing the same shit with different tools. 3D is more than just new tools to do the same process. It's a quite different process.
Of course it's going to take a long time. But they have to start somewhere.
I agree with keeping character animation separate, but when all that gets watched with CGI is shit tier Satelite garbage, it makes sense that the hate for CG is so strong. There happens to be a lot more out there, but it just doesn't get talked about very much.
Would it surprise you to know that Casshern Sins had CGI? Which is funny because it's often praised as one of the more gorgeous looking anime out there.
>take the transition from cel animation to the digital process. took a decade to get us to the current point.
There was quite a lot of good looking digitally colored anime even a decade ago.
While 3d anime animation never managed to convince me.
I understand that they have to start somewhere, but can't they do it somewhere where it doesn't ruin my gundam?
For example MJP was a good place for it.
>ruin your gundam?
I'm really digging IBO, but it looks like garbage and poor Barbz is off model way too much.
>inb4 leftover budget
That's not true.
>There was quite a lot of good looking digitally colored anime even a decade ago.
that's only because a decade ago was 2005 and not 2000.
>but can't they do it somewhere where it doesn't ruin my gundam?
someone has to be the lab rat. it happens to be you.
I gave up dubs. I feel the shame enough already.
Sunrise does fairly well on their non-central CGI assets, but they never bother to blend anything and it sticks out really poorly.
that looks like shit and they can't sing either
maybe, but lack of weight because the animators dont know what they are doing, and the weird outline thing going on (shader issue in that webm) continue to be a problem. The characters float, dont actually hold objects, they look bad.
I do cgi for a living, maybe you should stop by /3/ and argue that this garbage looks good. and then get laughed at.
Anon, Halloween is over, no need to try to spook me.
You win this round senpai.
There's nothing spooky about the future.
>So Incredible 2 will probably have a visual change from the first.
Never, they will not change that formula. They didn't for none of the Pixar movies, even Toy Story. They will never do it.
>mfw still no sources in sight
You guys are as bad as climate-change deniers.
>mfw that 12000x resolution
>I can literally put my face up her vagina
>you can actually see its hand drawn
>cg used for background characters
>many of them share the same models, only looking different with clothes
>their faces are completely inanimate, even when confronted with fear
>hand-drawn mech fight scene
As with most things, it depends on the quality.
I always felt Gundam Igloo got more flak than it deserved.
The character models were the biggest issue, as the transition of keeping standard anime reactions and the like didn't work at all.
Most of the mech battles were a joy to watch though. The Zudah and A Baoa Qu fights were fun to watch, I wish I had some webms.
Call me when /3/ made a decent-looking anime. I will be waiting.
Fair enough, it was also pretty funny just having that one FukuJun character show up in the 2nd Igloo release with the divebomber and just have him be noticeably Asian looking in comparison to the rest of the cast.
Still, the Guntank convict Squad and the A Baoa Qu fight from the Zeon side episodes were pretty dope.
Well the BDs for Exodus S1 are all out. as of last week.
If you wanna talk, go to /m/, but don't go into the running thread. Make a new one. Everyone is pretty sensitive to spoilers, except in the main thread. There is a lot of stuff that you don't wanna get spoiled on.
something like this then? right, got it
Yeah, I sure do love all the amazing hand-drawn mecha being produced these days.
I dunno, I still feel there's a lack of "polish" in all these webm's. Maybe it's just getting use to the inherit anime style of Japans cgi
3D that attempts to emulate real life humans and not some sort of stylized form will always be uncanny valley shit like pic related.
AniGaro Season 1's CGI animation was pretty damn good looking. Shame the second season decided to change studios for their CGI.
Are there any subs for Dead Aggressor that don't suck? The BD release I downloaded awhile back has this weird error in which the subs are shifted to the right of the screen and I refuse to watch the dub that the release included.
You should be able to fix that. You're using MPC right? Go to Options>Playback>make sure 'Use the built-in subtitle renderer' is ticked. Restart and you should be groovy,
The dub is doubly stupid because they changed the whole cast between the series and movie. Exodus may never even get a dub.
I think the movie itself can be kinda lame but Advent Children is probably the best Japan has done in terms of pure cgi
I like the cast, even though their a far cry from S1's. I'm waiting to see what the overall plot is going to be before making a judgement call on that given most Garo shows take awhile for that to kick in.
The new armor CGI and fights suck dick real hard though.
No problem. I take it you're using the [philosophy-raws] release?
Unfortunately none of the Exodus BD have been released with subs I think, but one anon made sure everything was retimed last week (and is supposedly fixing crunchy's errors too.). You'll have to ask /m/ for the link though.
That's how it looks from the most heavily-designed angle. I wouldn't be impressed until I saw a turntable gif. Even that ignores rigging and actual animation which tend to be horribly done in anime.
And Square as a whole too had Enix not bailed them out.
They probably should have let them die an honorable death than become the zombie they are today.
Okay, what's a better looking CGI animation from 2001 or earlier?
Well if it wasn't for him Square wouldn't have lived past the 80s.
Why that piece of shit out of all of Square's franchises? Why not a sequel to Chrono Trigger, one that wasn't a gigantic clusterfuck of shit whose only notable accomplishment was taking a rancid dump on the legacy of the first game? Or a follow up to Xenogears which lived up to that game's fullest potential? Or Vagrant Story 2 or Saga Frontier 3 etc.
Garbage CGI is the worst, but a lot of times I will pick meh CG over meh 2D.
It depends really.
With meh animation, it's too easy to get bored or confused of what's happening on the screen, 2D or CG.
Pretty much same here.
I am enjoying the speculation of how IBO will go, but the fight from episode 5 was surprisingly garbage outside Eugene's trick and Mika's weird newtype flash.
To be honest the fight with Crank did a lot more with barely as much animation.
I hope Delta does something other than the ADHD camera from Frontier. I watched that recently and was disappointed. The models actually looked nice, for 10 years ago, but you could barely enjoy them in motion.
