From what I heard, the japanese crowd didn't like it too much because "muh tradition" and how the main character used outright super powers in his kendo (as opposed to every kendo user in manga who just trained hard enough to slice buildings). Presumably they felt like it was downplaying the spirit of kendo?

That's just what I heard around the time it was cancelled anyway, I don't have a source to back that up.
