Firstly, you're suggesting that Norland somehow didn't notice there was anything weird about those trees before he cut them down. You'd think a brilliant botanist who'd been all the way to the New World would notice something was off about those magical trees.

Secondly, the core theme of that flashback was that the Shandians were being held back by their superstitions. Their snake wasn't a god, their disease wasn't a curse and there wasn't even anything special about their bell itself. They were blinded by their religion to the point that they were refusing to save themselves. Revealing that "oh actually the bell and trees were magic and Norland fucked everything up" would be taking a big steaming shit on the flashback.

Imagine that each of the final islands before Raftel is in hands of the Yonkou, including some islands before it, requiring to go through Yonkou to get to Raftel.

More than one Yonkou down = less rivals to stop other from reaching Raftel. That's why Worst Generation is so bad. They actually topple the balance and make the movement possible.

Considering there are like 12 characters at most (on a grand total of +500 characters) who made the One Piece their goal, I'd say that's rather believable.
There may be a lot of pirates who go out to sea because of the One Piece, but how many have the adequate potential, how many aren't just bored and following the flow, how many give up the pirate life as soon as they find a bit of treasury ?

Luffy had to defeat Moriah so that everyone got their shadows back and survived. He achieved this, so he won.

Luffy needed to defeat Lucci so that everyone could escape safely, and to prove that he had become strong enough to be on his level. He did, so he won.

Franky had to defeat Señor to destroy the factory, as he was defending it. He had the dwarves as backup, and even then, he just took a rest, as he woke up later to help with the Bircage. He still achieved his objective of destroying the letting the dwarves destroy the factory, so he won.

Zoro vs Mr 1 is kind of different, but Zoro just before passing out got to the level where he could cut steel. No real win other than stalling Mr 1 though.

Usopp's win is huge, he destroyed Doflamingo's plans, and twice at that.

The western version feels wrong because the flow of the eye is broken by the text in the middle. The text is what the human eye naturally gravitates toward in comics.
In the original version, the flow is perfect, it goes "retarded face>zoom out>punchline". In the western version, the eye goes "retarded face>punchline>zoom out". It's weird because it doesn't feel like Luffy's saying that line anymore. Also no one looks at the zoom out after the text.
For this reaction image to work for western reading, you'd have to actually flip it around. Mirror the whole thing. Not just switch around the panels.

Anime/manga boomed in the 90's because of toonami and now due to the internet it's grown a lot popular to gain access to it, some people have also grown into it during the 80's, my lecturers are probably old school and due to that mindset, would never understand/accept it.
