I'd prefer a partial adaptation with tighter focus. My biggest gripe with the series was that it felt like Erikson wanted to show off the entire setting he had come up with and shove every cool idea and character concept he had ever had into the story while he was at it. It was still pretty great, but I don't think complete adaptation would appeal to me that much. Adaptation of Deadhouse Gates would be pretty neat, though.

I'd say that individual books are mostly pretty good in terms of plot, but the series as a whole lacks coherence, or whatever the right word is. Like >>124944279 says, there's a fuckload of stuff going on, and I think the series would have worked better if the author had focused on some more narrow aspect of these going-ons. Lolita is all about the prose, at least for me. The fact that Nabokov was ESL is an embarrassment to all but like five English speakers who've ever lived. So you'll like it if pretty sentences are your thing, and you probably won't otherwise.

If you prefer genre fiction or stuff to "literary," English-course-type stuff, Malazan and The Prince of Nothing have both been mentioned and are pretty good.

The story, set in the present day, centers on the plight of a hostage and the ensuing efforts of family and new acquaintances, many of them associated with a fictional MMORPG, to rescue her as her various captors drag her about the globe. Topics covered range from online activities including gold farming and social networking to the criminal methods of the Russian mafia and Islamic terrorists.

I'm saying the fact that the vast majority of not only native English speakers but even "canonical" English prose-writers get BTFO by a guy who grew up speaking Russian is a blow to our honor as proud Anglo warrior men.

Excellent answer. When I read that book I couldn't shake the feeling that it was as pulpy as most anime. Obviously there are a few things that would have to get changed around. But I think you could really make it work. The difficulty would be convincing a typical anime audience not to perceive the Idirans as irredeemable bad guys because they look like scary space monsters and the Culture as automatic saviors because they are mostly represented by a cute girl in that story.
