How am I supposed to get Tsukihime to work? When I try to launch it it just shows a white (sometimes black) screen and sometimes the music will start to play. I've tried fixing permissions, run as admin, compatibility mode, japanese system locale, etc.
The one thing that works is running in 256 colors, but it looks terrible.
I've tried messing around with my graphics card settings but nothing else works.
This happens on a version I got from nyaa and the fuwanovel version.

Ciel Pros:

Executioner garb, serious personality, fighting style, pseudo-joking tone she takes sometimes, being a counter to Stupid and No Breasts.

Ciel should've been the one character interested in just what Shiki was capable of doing as a fighter. Nobody else gave a shit about his talents, except Arcueid, who just appreciated them out of necessity.

Roa has extensive knowledge of magic and also possesses vampiric mystic eyes, which nearly all of them have. SHIKI never has the ability to see anything like lines of vitality or death in the path without Roa active as anything more than a terrible voice in his head. All he can do is control his blood, steal the lives of others, and regenerate/remain alive after extensive damage to himself. That comes from his Tohno bloodline powers, Immortality and Fusion. Akiha's bloodline ability is Plunder, i.e. utterly consuming a person, right down to their very existence.

Roa develops mystic eyes in Arc/Ciel route precisely because he's linked to Shiki. He can leech what Shiki has due to SHIKI stealing half his life, but what he's actually seeing is only what he understands: the lifeforce (vitality) of living creatures. When Shiki shows him that he can cut inanimate things as well, Roa goes completely crazy and doesn't understand how it could possibly work.

Roa's ability isn't to drain the lives of others, but rather to overwrite them with his own soul and memories. The problem is that there is a collision during this process, in which Roa and the host merge, thereby polluting the next transition to the next host. His soul is degraded by the time Tsukihime occurs, as he himself will eventually degrade into nothingness, just like Nero will when the chaos consumes his intelligence. Since vampirism is a disease of the soul, anyone he overwrites will be a vampire.

It's also pretty striking that she shares some parallels with Sakura as far as suffering and corruption go - but Ciel didn't have a hero to save her from Roa's possession, and resolved to take matters into her own hands after Arc blew Roa out and the church finished using her as a science experiment. But Fate route was famous, and it was considered the best anime of 2006(yes it was, no matter how much you all hate it). Arc route anime was seriously an aberration, you can't even begin to compare, Fate 2006 is seriously amazing compared.

There's Akiha and Shiki discussing miscellaneous things in Akiha's room... Akiha and Shiki + Ciel at the school sports festival.

Akiha doesn't get a lot of parts in Kagetsu Tohya. It's a real shame. She also doesn't get her own nightmare sequence, which is something Ciel and Arcueid get. The closest you come to hearing about Akiha/Kohaku/Ciel's views of the dream world are that they all remember things they would really not like to remember.

My favorite sequence with all three is the card game. Kohaku and Hisui, conspiring, and Shiki throwing a monkey wrench in Akiha's strategy.

I like what Tsukihime tries to do. It's more small-scale, psychological, darker, and perhaps more atmospheric than fate, but occasionally the vn feels very amateurish and poorly executed which makes it difficult to rate it higher than fate (this makes sense seeing as it was TM's first vn back when they were still a doujin group).
I think it will benefit greatly from a remake, and I honestly wouldn't mind some pretty big changes being made to the routes (especially near-side) as long as it doesn't feel like a different vn.

Here's what I see happening:

First they'll adapt Arcueid's route, probably with elements of Ciel's route thrown in. Without a doubt, that's the first thing they'll do. Since this is a remake with probably a whole bunch of new shit added in (ad probably some stuff take out as well), the fact that it's been adapted twice won't really matter. Besides, J.C. Staff's adaptation is largely considered a disappointment and most people wouldn't have been exposed to it anyway, so it's moot.

Then, I suppose, they'll adapt either the Satsuki route or one of the Far Side routes somehow. Maybe a manga adaptation for the Far Side.

Well, luckily, Tsukihime shouldn't too much trouble to animate. Unlike Fate, where there are around half a dozen fights per route, Tsukihime only has around two or three each.

So as long as they do the Nrvnqsr fight justice, the rest should be fairly simple. Watching a properly animated fight with Nanaya arts is gonna be a real treat.

Assuming it ever happens in our lifetimes.

All of the Tsukihimes are well developed. Ciel and Kohaku just got turned into joke characters. Kohaku, I can understand. Nobody wants Nasu to dwell on the fact that she got massively broken in her childhood and became a shining example of what not to do to little children. Ciel, though?

She has all kinds of stuff she could talk about with Shiki besides CURRY. The whole curry thing was just... overboard. Especially by Kagetsu Tohya.

Ciel was the one person I could see acting like a teacher, not just about school shit, but wanting Shiki to join her doing calisthenics, training, and such, even if it's just an excuse to look at Shiki's ass. She's also completely more knowledgeable about magic than Arcueid is, in at least its application. Shiki wondering about her work, maybe Ciel learning about his past and wondering about his childhood.

You just never get the chance to connect with Ciel like you do with the others. You kill Arcueid, which is an instant turn on for her and a permanent attachment, since she's all "YOU KILLED ME, REMEMBER?" Akiha has the whole underlying plot of Far Side and NII-SAN, and the twins have the "girl I played with" and "the girl who gave me the ribbon" thing, in addition to all the rest they do.

Ciel seems to be relegated to HONORABLE SEMPAI, which she just isn't good at.

Just a reminder that Arc is arguably the strongest character in the Nasuverse.

The entire point of Tsukihime and F/SN are the characters, though. The "vampire loose in the city" and "the holy grail war" are the backdrops for the characters to interact. Sure, you have the "final boss", but even that is misleading. F/SN's final scenes are just ways for Shirou to affirm his convictions or deny them in favor of something he loves. The story isn't, in the end, about beating Gil, kicking Kotomine's ass, or beating Angry Manjew. It's about the events that occurred and how everyone is going to live as they're changed by them, and what kind of person Shirou is going to be.

Same with Tsukihime. Roa is just a way for Arc and Ciel to face who they are and move on. SHIKI makes you have to face Akiha's true nature, or the culmination of what you've learned about Hisui and Kohaku. Everything is just what you learn from interacting with the main cast. The backstory itself is almost entirely caught up in the character interactions of the Far Side path of Tsukihime. You can't advance without learning about and understanding the entire tragic story of the Tohno household, more so than Curry or Idiot make you understand about Elesia's past or Arcueid's fall from grace.

The main problem is that TYPE-MOON is centered entirely around Nasu. He writes all the important shit. I mean, sure, he doesn't write Apocrypha or that Waver thing, but all the major projects are done almost entirely by him.

Since 2008, he's been heavily involved in:

>Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works

He's also written a number of side stories.

So it's not exactly laziness. It's just that since Nasu's the core of the company who has his hands in all the big shit, that inevitably means that the overall rate in which products are released will be somewhat slow.

Tsukihime itself is a very large body of written work, and knowing Nasu, he's probably completely rewritten everything and expanded on the original very heavily.
