As a semi-normalfag who frequents a college campus with people I grew up with, there were 3 girls who were childhood friends. They all used to like yaoi, then some time they got into college they were no longer interested in it, and were all about the yuri. They've talked about their favorite MadoHomu doujins with me before. It's not a huge sample pool, but it seems relevant.

This. With a few glorious exceptions like Horizon, yuri has yet to even really get past the gimmick stage that these things always tend to go through. There's plenty of subtext but it's not generally accepted let alone popular as just a plain old thing with no particular impact per se.

Can't really see that changing in the near future either, particularly given Japan's demographics. Maybe if IPS stuff takes off since that'd make them legit able to carry on lines an Asia is very big no families, that's a much bigger source of disapproval then moralizing like it is in the West.

For that matter I know a gay dude that likes yuri. Not the actual sex stuff, but for whatever odd historical reasons there's tons of non-h yuri that does everything from fluffy diabetes inducing romance to pervert humor to simple SoL to varying degrees of drama. According to a previous thread there are a bunch of people on /a/ at least who barely even fap to yuri at all, but mostly go to yuri for the hnnng and futa-on-female for the fapping.

Kind of weird frankly how markets develop and various traits and subcultures can get a life of their own over the decades. I have no idea why but yuri has turned out different from yaoi in more then just one is chicks and one is dudes, they've often got different overall feels even if you imagine a swap. Though because of that it can be kind of cool when one artist does something else, I liked Creo for example and that was a mainly yaoi author.

Sure, that was a trail blazer, but we still end up with the likes of Sakura Trick "OMG GIRLS KISSING" and "well they go to an all girls school" and so on. They never actually had Nanoha & Fate just do normal couple things or marry off screen despite the situation just becoming ludicrous. Subtext is everywhere, but yuri remains niche and I don't see that changing in the near future.
