Absolutly nothing. It's a shame because the concept seems really neat, but the writing and pacing are non-existent.

It's pretty much the complete opposite, 20 mins a week is far more bareable than 20 hours of reading.
The anime is straight to the point and can convey much more information faster and easier than text.
>>
Only saw a couple of episodes but so far it's pretty damn stupid plot wise. It's by no means in drop territory though, the writing just needs to straighten up soon.

Not saying I hate text format or reading VN. Some stuff can only be done and conveyed this way.

But if we're talking about efficiency and not getting bored conveying stuff with dialogues + visuals is going to get the job done.

If you can read a 20 hour long VN no problem but get bored watching a 20 min long episode then you're the problem.

Is it that hard to figure out that they're just showing scattered pieces of the puzzle instead of explaining the whole picture because there's an element of mystery in this show just like in every single one of Uchikoshi's games? Sure it's all still pretty vague but it's obvious why they'd want to keep it that way for a while, and a lot of seemly nonsensical developments should end up making sense in hindsight.
Hopefully we were told to watch until ep 6 because that's when we'll have enough hints to start putting together some serious speculation instead of just being confused.

I started off really hating this, enraged that he would waste his talents on such shitty tripe.

I still feel this way as far as the... I don't know, subject matter? goes.

But I'm enjoying it now because I can see the way he works in this, multiple layers of complexity, things aren't explained straight out until later, a lot of set-up for later pay-offs, lots of small detail you need to pay attention to.

I still wish he'd picked something other than "LOL PANTIES" as the core of his story, but I am having fun nevertheless.

It's an ensemble cast of game type characters. Starting with episode one, you already saw how "game like" their confrontations are, right? This anime is made to help sell game-related merchandise as well as the usual character-related goods.

I'm guessing people generally get into it for the pay off in the first place, or just aren't very used to lengthy VNs.

I could see that, being told that the big payoff is the end and to power through the rest could color your view of the rest of the VN. I'm just surprised at just how many people seem to have it that way. Even the random SoL takes on a funny second view when you replay the game. Tsugumi for example is much more of a bitch to Takeshi in Kid's routes than Takeshi's routes, which makes a lot of sense when you figure out who he is

No, the writing and pacing are just a mess. Literally telling us "don't worry, epic twist on episode 6!" doesn't excuse the piss poor writing thus far. When there isn't any sense of cohesion or consistency you can't just scream 2deep4u to cover the glaring flaws.
>>
>>124784175
It's ok to admit you cat follow what's going on anon, we all have a decent idea of what's happening. That you can't wrap your head around anything beyond a SoL is nothing to be ashamed of.
>>
>>124784175
MANimes are good too, don't worry
>>
>>124784291
What you're following are details, there is still no decisive plot. There is literally started to be a twist in episode 6 which will set the real stage. You claiming you completely understand what's going on is objectively wrong, as information is purposefully being withheld from the audience.

Try watching something by ABe or Ikuhara, those are good stories. This is border line retarded, but throws vague details and impending that's of doom at you to trick you into thinking there's a greater narrative. I'm sorry you fell for such a shallow trick.

Yeah there is. MC wants to take back his body and stop the meteor from crashing on earth. That's the decisive plot.
There might be twists and turns that change the way we see those things, but it doesn't change the fact that they are 100% plot.
>>
>>124784494
I take it you haven't read the other works of the author then? Because he's successfully done the "throw out single pieces of information one at a time until they line up" schtick a few times now. He's flat out said he thinks of the twist he wants to write and then makes the rest of the story around it, so I think I can assume all the blatant hints we've gotten that we're already piecing together can let me assume similar things are to come.

Good effort, but I'm not spoonfeeding you the answers, try watching the anime again and about half of those answers at least will come to you. If you had these questions after the aime it would be another thing, but complaining about being only halfway through the story and not knowing the entire mystery yet is hilariously shit as far as criticisms go.

>What about the superhero stuff?
What about it? Three children were being experimented on to be turned into supersoldiers/superheroes/whatever, Mikatan became a superhero, White haired guy became a bad guy, status of the third one is unknown so far.
>Who took MCs body?

>>
>>124785205
Except there's no central idea being focused on. Just vague concepts followed by a twist for shock value. A mystery novel has a logical flow of ideas that lead to a big reveal. This is illogical concepts, poor characterization and time loops thrown in for good measure.

>>124785280
The problem is that none of the story has any sense of progression or cohesion, so no matter what twist is, it's not going to have any real impact. Nothing has been established or built up to enough where a subversion would elicit any task response. The only things that were actually built up to are the end of the world, which is still vague, and the characters themselves, which as we saw this week can flip their personalities at the drop of a hat. How does a big twist thrown into a nonsensical mess make for good writing?
>>
>>124785815
>There is no central idea being focused on

The end of the world is not vague, it's a meteor set to destroy the world. Sure you might not be as invested in the characters as you might be were this a visual novel, but that's not even your gripe as much as you're bitching about not having the answers and the fact the story isn't linear. The story has plenty of progression if you pay attention, we're learning more and more about what's going on each week and it leaves you with some answers and some questions with lots of room for discussion and guesswork. The fact this all flies right over your head and you decide it's all useless shit is your own fault not the author's. Deciding the twist will have no impact when so far they've all done well before it even happens is also pretty hilarious.

Go ahead and keep it up, I've needed these laughs.
>>
>>124777030

Isn't that how most Aniplex originals go. Just grab popular Otaku tropes and people and just mash them up into a show hoping it results in a hit.
>>
>>124777506

That rarely happens anymore in this fanbase. People just kind of say shit now and to them at least it's just the truth and no further explanation is necessary. It's also a good baiting technique whi H is what it's all about at the end of the day. No actual discussion goes on in the anime fandom anymore.

>>124786157
Nah, I'll stop. They've literally given a premise (end of the world is coming). They've done nothing to really delve into the idea, the characters are all so paper thin that their personalities can flip flop within an episode as hard as they did, and despite them having an end game, we've been fed plenty of details that have virtually no links between them (why child experiments? Why a robot? Why the spirits? Who's the cat? Why steal MCs body? Why the bear?). As loose as it all is, a "twist" will just end up feeling like exposition on the premise because we know the "real story" won't be happening till then.

If you want to tell yourself it's clever writing, then go right ahead and enjoy it.

>>124777641

I've never understood why people seem to like this sort of VN style approach. Hey we have 11 episodes but let's just have nothing really nothing happening at all but a bunch of antics for like most of a show and then right near the end suddenly everything is happening and then throw in some sort of cliche sob story dark twist that probably revolves around some cute girl dying horribly and suddenly everyone is praising the show and the writer to the high heavens. It's so bloody predictable that's how this is all going to play out there's almost no point in watching this show and we might as well skip to the finale where everyone will be sucking this Uchikoshi guys sick and hailing the show as a masterpiece.

Personally I think it's a totally deliberate way of manipulating gullible idiots expectations. Knowing that the only thing most people remember of these things anyway is the ending they just deliberately make the beginning retarded but promise some huge twist later on to keep people watching keep the current reception low but anticipation high so that whatever the twist is will look godly to people with no short term memory (as in the people most likely to stick around with shit like this) and they'll just forget about the shitty as fuck plodding nonsensical first half. It's just so obvious they're manipulating people's expectations so that they only have to put any real effort into the second half of the show and can still come out with people praising the whole damn thing in the end and I've just seen it so many times now with VN stories especially. It's a shitty way to run a show and I can't believe how many people fall for it every single time. Like just make something good and totally consistent from the get go, plenty of other shoes are pulling it off just fine this season.

>They've done nothing to delve into the idea
Did you watch this episode? It was quite blatantly stated that Qmay is actively sabotaging attempts to stop the world ending. I don't know about you but that sounds like delving into it to me.
>>
>>124786807
Stupid people like to feel smart. Give them a mess of a story with nothing to grasp outside a twist, then they can tell anyone who criticizes it "haha you just don't get it! It's all about the twist!" Without ever explaining what made the reveal good or well thought out in the first place.

You're right. They did a lot there. Now I'm emotionally and intellectually invested, and the twist will undoubtedly have a huge impact on me.
>>

Then they should show that. Every episode so far has been ghost-panties until someone sticks their head in at the end to mention the actual plot.
>>
>>124787038
You're the one who's dealing in absolutes here, sorry if I pointed out one of them that was objectively false since you can claim subjective things like the twist not impacting you as much as you want no matter if it was good or not.
>>
>>124786648
>They've done nothing to really delve into the idea
Except explain how the NSA is trying to stop it with missiles and the Qmei is working to stop that.
>we've been fed plenty of details that have virtually no links between them
Sure they do have links:
-Meika was built from plans that Rabura wrote 24 years ago while being possessed.
-Meika raised Mikatan so that she'd be a super hero.
-Meika and the white haired dude from Qmei were child experiments together.
-Rabura is dating dude from NSA
-Dude from NSA needs Meika's hacking skills to be able to fire missiles on the meteor.

You just can't pretend that nothing is connected.
>>
>>124787035
Literally no one has been able to explain anything about the plot save a few vague details. Please mister smart anon, enlighten us. What connections are we missing?
>>
>>124786648

No its shitty manipulative writing. Clever writing invokes the idea of a show with tonal consistency where you start to give a fuck early on and it speaks for itself, not because the writer asks people to watch until the halfway point with the promise that things will become more interesting. Why should a writer ever need to do that, that should be your immediate warning bell right there to not even bother following it live if at all. Imagine the writer of Game of Thrones saying don't worry guys it's going to look like crap for half it's run but I swear to god it gets better after that .

Do you know what delved into means? There's been nothing given on motivations or reasons for literally any of the greater plot. The closest thing we have to a motive is a girl dressing up as an alien because wants to get laid.

>>124786378
It's just what Aniplex does lately They've had a couple of recent hits using popular writers of Visual Novels with originals so they roll with it again here. I never get the sense they have a set plan for anything, they just seem to gather as many popular people to work on something and hope for the best and that their popularity and individual fanbase will carry a cluster fuck into hit territory. So far it's worked pretty much every single time. Sometimes you get a good show like with Madoka, but usually you just get Guilty Crown, Aldnoah or stuff like this has been so far. Basically I won't be surprised if the producers are the ones actually calling the shots here and are just trying to recreate the conditions that resulted in Madoka becoming a hit. That's what their past half dozen or so originals have felt like in any case.

The cast should be the ones involved in the actual events of the plot. Same issue with the news report about a girl dying. This is okay if it was a background element or something that would come up later, but it directly set the the plot for today's episode, in which the female's cast's actions had no relation to what is clearly the actual plot.

"Show, don't tell" is literally the most basic screenwriting rule. If you want to have a satellite being hacked, open the episode up with a bunch of NSA guys freaking the fuck out in a command centre. This writing is incredibly amateur.
>>
>>124787404
When you read mystery novels, do you expect to know who the real culprit is and what their motivations are before you even hit the halfway point?

If this was episode 8/12, I'd agree to an extent. But it's not. We're only a third of the way into the show. We're starting to get an idea of how all the plot threads and characters are interconnected.

No, but I expect a crime, motives, suspects ideas and events that aren't disjointed SoL, ominous foreshadowing and a cat that gives the most banal exposition possible and is literally a contrived plot device to move the story towards the twist while shamelessly denying any real progresson for the sake of "suspense".

Honestly I really hope this show does continue to flop as it's just becoming increasingly clear that most VN writers have no business being anywhere near TV anime for the most part. The only reason this is even happening to the extent it is these days is because of Urobuchi really though at least he brings in some ideas that don't just revolve around the otaku lifestyle and sensibilities so he's fit in for the most part when actually allowed to work as part of a team and where he's being supervised. Many of these other writers though like Maeda, Uchikoshi and Maruto just strike me as limited in experience both professionally and world wise (though using that JIN guy for Mekaku City Actors took the cake) enough to have any key or special insight into anything relevant to your average everyday person and can largely just write from an otaku centric perspective and about things that make sense to otaku that they can comprehend. Things like cute girls doing cute things and then maybe dying horribly and ironically and stories about "woe is me, boy does my hikkikomori life suck....oh hey wish fulfillment time".

For catering to the otaku crowd and their fans from the VN scene this approach doesn't really matter much, for most average people (as in anyone that isn't a dedicated stereotypical LN reading, VN playing, idol loving otaku either in Japan or abroad) they're probably wondering what the actual fuck, but then that's why it's on at midnight on a Saturday when most people would be busy actually doing something as opposed to sitting at home in front of the TV watching otaku anime.

Honestly though you can just see the difference most of the time when a show gets a writer with some actual perspective and experience in the field of screenwriting for TV versus someone who writes visual novels for otaku from an otaku centric perspective.
>>
>>124788218
What the hell are you busy doing at midnight? Normalfags please.
>>
>>124788028

Honestly this is about the best you can expect from shows clearly aimed at otaku and the authors fans like this one is. This is the reality of the current noitaminA. It's gone from being a normalfag block to full on hardcore otaku fanwank central. Something eventually might happen that gives the story a little more definition and grounding, but that's just the reality of the block it's airing in now and this is generally the kind of storytelling and style that that audience likes. I'm honestly just not even surprised and don't know how anybody can be really. The only thing that interests me is to see what the twist is and how hard it manages to hook people or not. Personally I just don't see how it is, expectations are damn low at this point so just about anything eventful happening will look like a monumental triumph of screenwriting and considering the target audience that's probably all it'll take to push this show into hit territory.

I mean fuck when it comes down to a noitaminA show having an event ticket for it's Blu-Ray when the blocks original mission statement was "to launch a block with the intention of expanding the target audience beyond the typical young male demographic." what does that say? Who do you think is interested in things like event tickets cause I can tell you it's not people that aren't the typical young male demo.
>>
>>124788218
Normal people aren't watching anime that airs in the middle of the night you dumb piece of shit.
>>
>>124788333

>>
>>124788550
Not at midnight you're not that's an evening thing, by midnight most people who aren't underage have started to head home so they can be ready for work the next day.
>>
>>124788509
But I like otaku stuff. I just don't like poor writing parading as an interesting or thought provoking story.
>>
>>124788516

Err yeah that was my point, that if it were aimed at normalfags it wouldn't be on at that time. Incidentally I forget it airs on Thursday on noitaminA because a part of me is still having trouble registering this as a noitaminA series as opposed to something that would normally air in Aniplex's Saturday otaku block alongside Gunslinger Stratos.

Try working on that reading comprehension a little bit. I know /a just hates actually reading what people write and just insists on making up their own versions of reality but come on already.
>>
>>124788509
If you write a twist into a show, you don't fucking tell the audience. What Uchikoshi did is literally the clickbait of writing, "You won't believe what happens in episode 6!". Now people are just watching to see what happens, not because the content is actually good. And in 2 weeks when episode 6 does happen, it's going to be underwhelming because we've been guessing it the entire time and it wasn't a blindside. Hell, the show itself isn't even hiding the fact that there's more going on, it's just doing it so poorly.

Where earlier noitaminA shows no doing very well? I know Psycho-Pass killed it, but did anything else? Maybe they where forced to give up on the dream and resort to the usual pandering because it wasn't losing everyone money.
>>
>>124788602

....Okay.....well my job often involves working later in the day and often late into the night. Not really sure what else to say. Not everybody in the worlds job involves typical 9-5 and then you fuck off and go home schedules. Also if you think this is the way it works in Japan especially than think again pal.
>>
>>124788751

Yeah I know, it's pure strategy and nothing else, but what can you expect out of this industry these days. This isn't the first time Aniplex has run a noitaminA show and had a key staffer leak to potential fans that they absolutely have to watch a specific episode coming up in the future. They did it with Saekano and it's episode 6 and it worked so I'm not surprised they're doing it here. Again everything about the way this show is being constructed screams trying to manage and manipulate the expectations of the viewer. It's extremely bad and desperate promotion but again what else do you expect from this industry and producer at this point that will do and say anything to draw attention to their shit including claiming that Aldnoah.Zero will surpass Gundam and that Guilty Crown will feature cutting edge writing and themes that will set the pace for the next generation of anime and it's creators.

Well that's kind of what's in and popular now with anime writing and conceptual design. Monogatari did it to the tune of becoming a smash hit after all. It's all about that meta otaku wank sweet spot and trying to have your cake and eat it too by having tons of fanservice and snappy dialogue and basically being self aware that you're just largely fucking around for the must part and then right near the end of an arc shit starts to happen all at once that is generally nothing special, but it's about making it look that way, especially in comparison to what preceded it, and managing the expectations and simple wants and needs of the viewer that seems all the rage right now.

It's because this formula and meta approach HAS worked so well for Aniplex and these eroge writers with their unorthodox and IMO completely backwards approaches to screenwriting that they keep tapping before that they keep taking this approach and it's not going to stop until it just stops working for them like it has.

Don't get me wrong I personally don't feel that this is how writing for TV is supposed to be done period, anime, live action or whatever, but in the case of the otaku audiences that are likely to buy shit I just can't deny that it works and works really fucking well. If this is what people want to see than there's not much that can be said other than it just doesn't work for me.
>>
>>124788751

Basically there's two ways it can go. Either people are really underwhelmed because they expect something big to happen and it's not what they expected, or they've been so underwhelmed to date that the twist makes them go "OMG HOLY SHIT THIS SHOW JUST GOT HYPE" and it blows up into a huge hit. It could really go either way.
>>
2 more episodes until we find out one of the main twist. That is if Marina Inoue wasn't a lying piece of shit.

I downloaded the first three episodes to give it the 3 episode rule, and I couldn't even stand episode one. Its literally one of the worst pieces of shit I've seen, and I spent an entire season watching a masochist wiener dog obsessed with books live with a dominatrix. Am I missing something appealing? Sometimes fanservice is enough, but everything about this feels terrible.
>>
>>124788751

The only noitaminA shows I can ever recall being hits were the ones that started airing when Aniplex took over managing the block and started working towards shows that would cater more to otaku and become commercial hits. They started out rather reasonably with stuff like Ano Hana that general audiences could still enjoy (and which was also the blocks biggest commercial hit and A-1 Pictures only real notable original hit ever), but then started moving further and further into just going full on otaku pandering to the point where noitaminA is now compromised largely of shows like Guilty Crown, Black Rock Shooter, Saekano, World Conquest Zvezda, Galilei Donna, Nanana's Buried Treasure and now Punchline. Occasionally you still get something like Ping Pong or Silver Spoon, but recently it just feels like another block where Aniplex can just stick their bad design by committee to try and be popular and sell Blu-Rays shows that they can't fit into their Saturday block cause it's already full.
