Gunbuster was hardly super serious grimdark all the way, and Diebuster was hardly super happy friendship times until the last second. You just weren't paying attention. They're both great standalone shows, tell great stories, and complement each other well.

Episode 3 onwards made it clear Nono was mostly putting on a front for Lalc minus the occasional distraction. And the Fraternity kids were collectively a hundred different ways of fucked up even before episode 4.

You got it backwards Lark stole the spotlight from Nono to the point that the story was pratically about her. Never thought Kazumi played second fiddle to Noriko just that latter had more growing up to do through the course of the story.
>>
>>124546416
Well yeah, don't you remember all the character growth from the attempted rape scene?
>>
>>124546824
It's more like the focus slowly shifted as Lal'C took more influence from Nono rather than her stealing the spotlight.
>>
>>124546824
Lal'c was always the true main character.

Nono was basically a walking documentary camera, she was the foil to everybody else.

Hell, even at the very start of the show when Nono was heading to the train, it was Lal'c narrating about gods making wishes, the same line she ends the show with.
>>
The story made no goddamn sense!

>>124546824
Nono was everyone's foil, but Lal'c was the protagonist. It was always about her journey, not Nono's.

>>124546972
She didn't get much focus in the first half either.
>>
Maybe if Gainax wasn't dead we could get Tribuster.
>>
>>124546416
Nono didn't change much throughout the story, she was always the genki girl and loved hard work and guts. She went through a different kind of evolution than Lal'c: everyone was trying to dissuade her and get her to give up on her dreams. She struggled with doubts and misgivings, but in the end reaffirmed everything she already knew

>>
Diebuster was good but it had.....a serious lack of character in comparison to Gunbuster which made it less impactful as a result. I just really couldn't much for the leads this time around, Nono felt a tad too forced and she doesn't grow at all through the course of the story while Lark was bland and couldn't really carry it by herself, ironically the character I winded up liking the most was Tycho since her story on episode 3 was really engaging and I thought her personality was more memorable than either two leads its too bad that she becomes irrelevant after episode 4 like the rest of the cast same for Lark and Nono. Nicola is the worst character and his plotline amounts to nothing the other Topless are a waste of space as well, while Noriko's BF in Gunbuster didn't have a huge impact on the story her presence did to Noriko and when she grows up ahead of her and has a child it really makes you feel for her that she misses growing up with her BF to become a pilot other characters like Coach also have a huge presence in the story hell you even get to see the bully from the first episode in the last one as a new teacher what Im trying to say is that the cast for the most part in Diebuster don't really matter which hurts it a bit. The story is also a tad to much for its runtime to the point where it feels compressed and you're not getting the full picture, Gunbuster had a relatively simple story that didn't take up from the character development while Diebuster's story is too big and takes up a lot of time from the characters.
>>
>>124548599
Maybe it was the time periods they were made since Gunbuster was literally Gainax's foreray into anime so a lot was riding on it while Diebuster was a product made by their youngsters for fun. I feel like TTGL was a more successful version of Diebuster incorparting everything new and old and putting them together to create a complete package while Diebuster was just doing what Gunbuster did by incorporating what was popular with anime at that time to make something as a testament for it.

In terms of sequel shows that are radically different from the original Diebuster is one of the few examples that get it right and is still good on its own but its lacking what made Gunbuster a classic.
>>
>>124548599
>Nono felt a tad too forced
You did a good job of immediately getting me to stop reading if nothing else.
>>
>>124547596
Subaru is funding it but it's an inhouse Gainax show alright though the 3DCG looks Korean sweatshop-tier. Shouji Saeki's the director, been with Gainax since NGE, directed a couple of episodes of FLCL. Looks like he last did the Medaka Box seasons.

So far Pleiades is just a real comfy old-school mahou shoujo show, there's not even real combat. But it's definitely laying the seeds for some weird shit later on, and you can tell things are gonna get sad.
I was only half-joking with >>124547496 , but only half. It feels like a very earnest show, I hope it does end up getting Gainax back on their feet.

She had a naturally genki personality but it basically became a front for the other fraternity members who all had serious issues. Everyone was telling her she would never achieve her dreams and telling her to give up, she had deal with a lot of self-doubt but still kept kept up a front to encourage the others.
>>
The story makes little sense. You can follow the storyline; it's not incoherent. But in terms of knowing why things are the way they are, Diebuster shows you first, then tells you later. For example, without some key information revealed in the second episode, the ending of the first episode feels incredibly silly, if not stupid. Another weird thing is Nono's idolization of this Nonoriri person, whose identity we only know at the tail end. By the time the end credit roll, there aren't many unresolved story arcs. But does it all really fit together in a meaningful way? I'd say no. And while it might technically be a sequel to Gunbuster, only its biggest fans are going to catch some of the subtle tie-ins.

More important, though, is that the relationships don't register at an emotional level. I knew the story wanted me to buy the awkward friendship between Nono and Lal'C and her growing closeness to the Topless team that was once very aloof. The script said it was so. I just didn't buy it. The human touch was absent, and so when it is supposed to matter in the sixth episode, I was like, "Really?" I'm a sap; I watch romantic comedies with Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore because I want to believe in love even with the crapola storylines and the "meet cute" and everything else. You want me to be moved by an abiding friendship put through the ringer? Man, I get that. But sell me on it! And Diebuster didn't. Nor did it ever make me care for the other Buster pilots, so when they started getting picked off, did I care? No. That made the finale a wash for me.
>>
>>124549330
>She had a naturally genki personality but it basically became a front for the other fraternity members who all had serious issues.
I get that but that doesnt change the fact that it was overbearing and a tad too on the nose at times like they tried to push her as some endearing character but it didn't work out due to how silly every aspect about her was and how overpowered she became.

Sounds like you wanted the show to be one thing and it was something else, and you ended up blaming the show.

Diebuster is indeed the sequel to Gunbuster, just more thematically than plot-wise. Diebuster took Gunbuster's big themes about human connection and sacrifice, and applied them to adolescence and the loneliness it brings. But Diebuster also applied those small scale ideas of loneliness and adolescence to humanity itself growing up.
