Just practice. Drawing is one of the easier hobbies to pick up, and probably the cheapest starting. Like everything you do, you're only gonna get good if you enjoy it and put work into it.

Now, photography, which is what I'm into, really is the rich boys' club. Takes me a lot of saving to buy lens, cameras, driving to places, keeping track of weather, lighting, etc. I should get a cheaper hobby.

20+ years of drawing and still suck

I'm not very good at drawing, I'm better than some, but not really.
Something you should really consider is learning traditional art and figure drawing before you start doing anything like manga or cartooning.
When I read a how-to manga book by an actual Japanese guy who can actually fucking draw manga, it's from a perspective that expects you to know that stuff already.

I'd say practicing really hard on drawing manga will be somewhat fruitless if you don't get the main components down (on which there are so many sources of information).

Again, I'm not very good. Most people's drawings here are miles better than what I can do. However I'll say one more thing. As with anything you want to be good at, you can't just practice, you have to want to practice.
You have to enjoy the act of getting better at something.
The artists I respect the most, and tend to enjoy the most are always improving and trying new things.

In all seriousness, if you draw for that long and you're not improving very fast, you may be doing something wrong. Many artists fall into a rut always drawing the same thing in the same style and just stay stuck, for decades.
Just drawing is not enough. You have to actively try to improve by objectively looking at your shit and identifying what's bad.

I bought a tablet years ago and could never get it to draw on my other monitor so I stopped using it. I have a dual tv + monitor set up and it's stuck on the tv. I don't want burn in. I tried unplugging the tv but the pen cursor doesn't show up on the monitor so I stopped drawing.

Drawing in real life is just tracing using your eyeballs son. You might start out looking worse than your photo traces but you will eventually surpass it and be able to make up perspectives and poses just because of the sheer volume of muscle and visual memory.

Is it really that hard for westerners to pick up anime/manga-style illustration? I mean sure, you could try drawing those huge eyes, the wacky hair, exaggerated blushes and what not, but there's always this tinge of gaijin that always seems to remain. It's distinct. I've seen tumblr levels of "anime" and professional western mangaka, and they're very different from one another, but still quite far from what it's supposed to be.

What influences your illustrations? What references do you use for your style? Is it really just a westerner thing, or is there a much simpler answer to it? A much more complex one perhaps? It just boggles the mind, looking from an outsider's point of view.

It's mostly exposure to specific techniques and drawing styles. Westerners tend to practice using western methods and teaching aids, which ends up producing distinct characteristics in their style. That said, I've seen plenty of talented western artists adopt very good manga styles since that's what they wanted and they put in the work to get good at that style.

Relatively great western artists I could think of that offers how to draw videos and the like (save for the lot in DeviantArt) such as Mark Crilley, happens to be some of the most gateway artists on the internet who offers decent tutorials.

Aside from him, the style of other professional artists whose books I've read such as Christopher Hart are stuck in the 90's wherein anime/manga was a hit in the west. It seems as if anime/manga is no longer a worthwhile investment in modern day, that western professionals would no longer bother with it. Though, for good reason, seeing how anime and manga affect Japan.

Git gud. I've been drawing with a shitty bamboo forever and I can do "decent". bad hardware doesn't really hinder your capability unless you're literally using KB+M.

But I feel I lack such a big sense of perspective and lighting that if I were to spend 8 hours on a piece I wouldn't get something as detailed as that, and I really don't know where to start or what to practice on for learning to do great detail like that. I practice and practice but If I were to draw something scaley I would need reference on how light works of scales/metal/plastic/etc.

One of the best artist I've seen. To be able to draw out an image like that without reference/sketch is pretty insane. Everyone has some starting point in general that they work out their piece, but he can just go and make a finished piece with strokes without a base.
