Plus, they need to work on their actual character animation - while background and effects and overall production quality is steadily high, animation itself can be improved.

Just like with Fighter planes and gaming Consoles - there are "X Gen" anime.

So far, only KyoAni and PA Works have 5th Gen anime: Hanasaku Iroha, Hyouka (and possibly now Euphonium, also it seems like polished 4th Gen).

Single work alone is sufficient to elevate studios above all others, since its technological and qualitative leap is enorm.

Which other studio will be able to field own their 5th Gen fighter? No idea. Currently none seems really capable of it. Some can do in Movie format, but that does not count for obvious production and budget reasons.

Hanasaku Iroha is "demo" anime by PA Works, funded by local prefecture, their anniversary work. They did not make any show in same quality since.

Hyouka is KyoAni show off as well.

Last studio to try to show off were Bones with Space Dandy, but failed utterly.

Dogakobo is studio with great potential - its seen they like what they do and do it with car. At least it was so. Was the recommended studio people would pick for their favorite comedy/sol adaptation - now not so sure.

None. Shaft did not break the next gen treshold yet. Mostly becasue Shaft is not creative and barely develops technologically - they just reuse what works for them over and over and over.

Shinbo`s style got old already by Vampire Bund, yet its same pseudo-monogatari shit that in turn was same as in Moonphase still in Nisekoi even.

They tried somewhat to develop with Denpa Onna and Vampire Bund (still includes some of best technicaly scenes shaft did), but failed.

Madoka was success, but essentially nothing groundbreaking in terms of quality (and lots of QUALITY).

As told before - next ones to reach new level likely to be A-1 and JC Staff, since they have the resources. Sunrise is jew, so will not even attempt to also it`d be easy for them.
