To be fair, Charmander can sweep Brock pretty easily in genwun. Charizard also has a type advantage against all but two of Giovanni's Pokemon, and they're too busy trying to get that 30 acc OHKO to actually use their advantage.

And if you don't pick Squirtle you can't get a water type before Brock anyway.

Red didn't use Charmelion against Misty, did he? You don't really need to when there are oddish/bellsprout growing right outside. Same with Surge and diglett.

And the only way Surge has a type advantage against it is if you've been grinding and already have Charizard, and at that point the stat difference lets you one shot him anyway.

I used Charmander against Brock every time in Gen1.

Both Geodude and Onyx have shit Special stats, so despite the type disadvantage, Ember actually did a lot of damage. Not only that, but the only damaging moves they knew were Tackle and Bide.

Of course, that changes in Gen 3, where Onyx learns Rock Tomb.
