Are Terabyte HDD still susceptible to failure? Dont want my collections to be a waste.
>>
Yes.

All HDD's are susceptible to failure. SSD's much less, but they still have their issues

tfw one of my older drives doesnt sleep when inactive.
>>
Here's what you need.

3 drives, preferably not cheap Seagate or WD green.
2 for RAID5, 1 for backup.
ZFS.
Learn how to use cron and rsync for the non-RAID drive.

Size doesn't matter, get any capacity you want.
>>
>>124057259
ah yes I always go Seagate.

The rest I need to learn.
>>
Shit, I forgot what that doujin was called and reverse image search turns up nothing.
>>
>>124057450
artist is himeno mikan forgot the title too
>>
>>124057259

But my Seagates are dirt cheap man, and I'm a stingy fuck.
>>
>>124057438
Seagate has good enterprise drives, their consumer ones are very hit or miss so if you feel playing roulette, go ahead.

The rest isn't hard to learn, but you'll have to get out of your Windows comfort zone.
>>
>>124057259
B-But my $110 3TB Seagate!
It's sleeping peacefully right now
>>
>>124057498
Thanks, found it on Sad Panda. Title is "Little Sister HDD Crash"
>>
>>124057438

>Seagate

Its like, you want to lose your data or something.
>>
If you want reliable , stick to HGST, Toshiba and Hitachi.

They're still mechanical drives though, they can fail more than they comfortably should.
>>
>>124057592
So is Samsung HDD good?
>>
>>124057705
Samsung HDD division got bought out by WD.
They were good though.
>>
>>124057704
Ah yes I can get Hitachis 1TBs external cheaper than Seagate ones

>>124057750
*were

so pretty much no huh
>>
Just build/buy a NAS.

Mine auto-backups everything to a 3rd drive.
>>
>>124057787
>external
Nigger please, externals usually have cheap Seagate guts.
>>
>>124057860
Only WDC and Seagate are being sold around here for internal

so its WDC then?
>>
>>124057259
>2 for RAID5, 1 for backup.
>ZFS.
This doesn't make sense. You either mean 3 disks in RAID5 or 3 disks in RAID-Z.

Anyway, don't bother with ZFS unless you have $1000 bucks to spend on a proper NAS build with ECC memory and all the bells and whistles.

mdadm or whatever is more than enough for storing anime and other general use-cases. Get more disks and go RAID6 if you're worried about failure.
>>
>>124057259
>WD green
True. I'm trying out Reds now to see if they're more durable.
>>
>>124058036
5400rpm reds are junks, get the Red Pros.
>>
>>124057704

>hitachi

I'm still lugging one 82gb one from the early 2000's. This thing was abused as swapfile for years when I played wow with 256 ram and its still working as it did back then.
On the other side seagates lost... too many to count.

Are hitachi still producing drives the way they did, that is, they weren't bought bought someone else? If the quality's not changed I might get myself a few.
>>
>still wasting money on shitty slow spinning disks
>not waiting for flash memory to get XBOXHUEG and cheap at exponential levels in the next few years
Good goys.
>>
>>124058249
They're called HGST now and belong to WD.
>>
>>124058304
>waiting
Why buy anything at all when it's going to get better in a few months anyway?
>>
>HDD is vibrating if the case is in the wrong position
>constantly have to reposition the whole PC because of uneven ground
>>
>>124058365
Rubber mounts were invented for a reason, dude.
>>
>>124058036
Red is listed for servers for a reason, they're meant to actually be constantly spun up and are rated for less stops and starts than blacks. They trade this for a faster spin rate which is worthless to you.

If you aren't going to keep the drive constantly active get black or a hitachi drive, those are cheaper and build quality has improved a bit in the past years.
>>
>Are Terabyte HDD still susceptible to failure?
Yes, and I imagine they will be for a long time to come. As of current, the only realistic, long-term solution to preserving fillipino flipbooks is >>124057259
>>
>>124058249
This. Running an old 2004 drive as main HDD for Windows. Shit works. Start up is a bit slow but everything else is good.
>>
>>124058249
HGST, those drives are still top notch.
>>
1TB drives are fine, some 2TB+ drives do seem to have higher failure rates. But anything and everything can and will fail, so use RAID and/or make frequent backups.
>>
Magnetic tape you fag.

20+ year shelf life
No power used
3 times less the cost per GB than mechanicals
Failure rate of a tape drive isnt even in the same dimension as mechanicals.
>>
>>124058713
I'm not storing for future generations though.
>>
>>124058713
Tape is not cost effective unless you really need space, and I do not mean 10TB plebs, but 80+
>>
>>124056725
You can buy a 5 TB drive for 100$.

Just replace your external drives every 3 years and you'll be fine.

Also, SSDs are getting cheap at a ridiculous rate. I've seen 256 gb Samsung 840 evo/850 Pros for like 110$
>>
>>124058844
1tb SSDs are dropping to $350, some are even MLC and not Kingston
>>
I've always set windows to never turn off my HDs and my oldest one is a 6 year old WD Black with no problems. Have I just been lucky? Did I just jinx myself?

Here's your current alternative, Gramps.
Gotta get with the times.

I'm fapping to this.
