Shounen trope after shounen trope and shitty battles lasting 10 episodes, accented some garbage writing made the original unbearable to watch. I can agree, but I also feel bad because Kaoru and Misao never got to shine in their own battles. They had to share Katamari.

Further more, I feel like Shishio's gang only truly shined WHEN they were pitted against Kenshin's loser friends.

Usui though submitted out of fear/chance for revenge, and yearned though dreaded his own goal.

All three ultimately feel helpless to work with those close to them but accept doing what little they can.

Indeed, definitely one of the bests, but maybe because it was among the first "modern" shonen. (it also avoided a lot of the tropes and conventions associated with modern shonen, funny enough, Like Kenshin being 28)
