Because anime was finally becoming refined enough with technology and production, and studios were willing to take risks and animate different types of shows. Not that any of those were extremely different, it was a mindset.

For example, JC staff collaborated non stop with honey and clovers mangaka, which is why it looks completely unlike something JC would made, and is a perfect (plus some) adaptation. The score/art is perfect for the series.

I'm not sure if 2005 is the exact year I would tag for this, maybe around 2000-2003 as a start, but this was a good standardization.

If you look at the charts and anime lists, 2002,3 and 4 are also all great.

I think 2009ish was the descent of what we are currently in. Obviously there are some standouts like five leaves, chiahayafuru, space bros, and tatami galaxy (severely overrated) but I think the overall quality and demographicing has got worse
