Votoms, it's fantastic and gripping, Chirico's ability to escape from pretty much anywhere is marvelous but everyone has such a bad habit of attacking their own people to the point it isn't funny.

I wish they'd make more of Honoo no Tenkousei, I'd say Trigger would be a good studio for it but if no one is touching it anymore I guess I should read the manga, how does it hold up compared to the anime?

I got sick of hearing the boyfriend is a pilot song for the umpteenth time. Her little breakdown at the end reveals how empty her life is. She continually fails to see how much of a complete idiot Kaifun is. Hikaru is a moron.
>>
>>123910532
Patlabor is great as long as you understand it's not about mecha action. It's more of a slice of life show about cute cops who also happen to use mechs.
Also remember there are two anime timelines.
The 80s OVAs lead into the movies, which only the first is a great Patlabor movie. The second is one big Mamoru Oshii monologue about how the end of the Cold War turned Japan into pussies. The third actually isn't a bad movie at all, it just follows one of the side characters and works as a supernatural detective mystery story.
Then there's the TV series and the New File OVAs from the 2000s. Again, it's more of the good stuff that makes Patlabor enjoyable, just don't expect the same continuity.
I wish someone would sub the live action Patlabor series they recently did.
>>
>>123910732
>Her little breakdown at the end reveals how empty her life is
Why would you hate her for that? It made me feel bad for her.
>She continually fails to see how much of a complete idiot Kaifun is
Because she's 16 and has a crush, failing to see a person's flaws sort of goes with the territory with that sort of thing. She gets older and realizes what an asshole he is.
>Hikaru is a moron.
Agreed.

It pulls annoying shoujo cliches by constantly having Hitomi waffle over Van or Alan, but we know way too well she'll end up with fucking Van so all that bullshit it just tedium.
Also, Van took way too long in the story to get over his EDGY teenager angst.
And the worst thing of all that just wouldn't die: fucking Merle.
>>
>>123899261

>>123912731
>It pulls annoying shoujo cliches by constantly having Hitomi waffle over Van or Alan, but we know way too well she'll end up with fucking Van so all that bullshit it just tedium.

If it wants to be that, I don't see a problem. Besides, this was 1995. Stuff like that was in high time. Hitomi herself at least had some depth to her.

>Also, Van took way too long in the story to get over his EDGY teenager angst.

Part of his story, part of his character. The story was rich enough it revolved around other characters more until the end.

These are pretty minor. Escaflowne's production values were practically movie tier from start to finish. The only problem with it was that it was a 50 ep. show condensed to 39/40. If anything, it would've benefited from having 240 more minutes.
>>
>>123913184
No. It ran long enough. It drug its heels far too long to have its horrible character bullshit.
Also, Yoko Kanno needed to write more songs for that. Got really tiring hearing the same fucking Esca-flowne song over and over.
>>
>>123913306
The pace was actually a bit quick, and that was a criticism even in Japan back when it aired. It literally was written to be 50 episodes.

A lot happened in this show and you could see it could've benefited from more slower character development scenes rather than moving the plot along.

I don't think the Escaflowne chant was reused that excessively.

>>
>>123912611
It had much more potential. There were a lot of things unexplored. Maybe it´s just me having it only watched once but stuff like the people that build Escaflowne and repaired it or the time travel were never really explained.
I also really dislike how the bond between Escaflowne loses it´s significance after 1 or 2 episodes it´s introduced in. It´s barly mentioned.
While the finale was ok it felt unsatisfying to me. That just me though.

>>123912731
I agree with the shoujo part but Merle could have been much worse. I didn´t like her at first but she shows her passion towards Van very direct which made her sometimes annoying sometimes likeable. I don´t hate her but I can see why people would.

>>123913184
The Shoujo elements weren´t bad but could have been handled better. Being popular at that time is no excuse.

You don't know what you are talking about. Escaflowne has three full-fledged soundtracks, plus one compilation also with some new tracks. How many does your favorite 26-episode anime have? It has enough battle tracks so that the most iconic one, Dance of Curse, is played ONCE. The Escaflowne chant is used in more tracks, but they are independent melody-wise.

You are just searching for things to criticize since you didn't like it. But the reason my friend is, you are a peasant and your taste is shit.
>>
>>123917188

>The Shoujo elements weren´t bad but could have been handled better. Being popular at that time is no excuse.

How specifically? I honestly didn't find any of the shoujo bad and I don't read shoujo. But, more to the point, it's like complaining about something being archetypal when it came out during the high time of the genre. It's like complaining about Love HIna being an archetypal harem when everything that came after it copied it.
>>
>>123914652
Each one had an almost completely different staff than the one before. It gets pretty schizophrenic.

I'm warning you now, Part III is pretty bad. I'd say don't watch it, but it still has some nice Eve songs, so watch it but tell yourself beforehand that it's not canon and has nothing to do with the previous two Megazones.
>>
Should I bother with Eva or UC at this point? All these years and I still don't give a shit.
>>
>>123918060
It´s been a while since I watched Escaflowne but the Shoujo bothered me because it didn´t fit well at some points.

I don´t get what you mean by your archetype argument. It´s not like Escaflowne defined the Shoujo Genre.
>>
>>123918366
No but it came out at around the same time as the shoujo shows that are now the archetype for that genre. If the criticism is that it was too bland as a shoujo, it's not fair considering that's what shoujo was at the time.

But if your argument is that the shoujo didn't fit with the other elements, I will disagree. I think it blended well.

I started watching this recently because i've heard that Dante of DMC was originally inspired by the main character of this. Can see it. Made out to be this badass that has a hard time taking very much seriously, kinda childish in the way he taunts enemies and full of light-hearted cheesiness. It´s slightly above average and has it´s moments. Not a must watch but I enjoyed it for it´s music and themes. The MC being adult and having to take care of his family but still wanting to chase his dream of being a rockstar.
The MC becomes pretty interesting actually.

Some episodes are shit, like episode 3, but the finale is beautiful.
