Haruhi is a psychopathic monster and anyone who defends her (as she appears in the anime at least) is a lunatic.
She is the antagonist. She sees everyone else as tools for her own amusement and will gladly manipulate and cheat her way into getting whatever she wants, and she always gets what she wants by nature of the universe she inhabits. Watching the anime is unbelievably frustrating because she never gets what she deserves.
