I really enjoy this show, but I have no idea why it has 40 minute episodes, since it's not like any of the episode use the extra time.

I really liked Kannagi and I hate the reason why it never got a second season.

A more recent example might be Argevollen. It wasn't great, but I thought the SOL angle for a mecha-military flick was a pretty good idea.

I strongly disagree. The main point of Figure 17 is the character developement not the alien hunting, which mainly serves as a catalyst for said character developement. Her daily life and how it interacts with her mission is what this anime is really about.

Also every SoL part required different things from Tsubasa, e.g. in the ball game she had to trust her own abilities, and in the play she had to overcome her shyness in front of others. I watched half of the show and I still don't get why /a/ creamed over it so much. It was really boring for the most part, the girls were bland as shit, the only good parts involved the fat director and his PTSD for working on Jiggly Jiggly Heaven and that episode about the facial expression of that 27 year old loli.
It was so dull and I'm really into the animation process.

It was shit. It is shit. It's been shit. Nothing but contrite mega-weeaboo bait with flat characters and a barely existent plot. It's seasonal garbage that will be forgotten by next season's end. Barely anyone gives a shit about Bakuman, and Shirobako isn't a tenth of a time as great as that shitshow, because at least that had decent characters and good art with a progressive plot.
