Why are manga page layouts so much better than capeshit layouts? It's fukken sad. Look at this. This is "The Killing Joke" and is considered a comic classic. 95% of the comic is a page layout just like this. It's absolutely horrible even though the story is great. It's a tragedy on paper.

Are you kidding me? It's a great layout, pretty standard stuff. First panel sets the location with a cut-in to the city. The second panel group on the top left is great because it gives the feeling of a the store being a background for the character art but also that "background is focusing on key points in the scene. And while it's doing all that, it also smoothly transitions into the lower panels showing the doll and moving the focus to the support character.

It's visually dynamic, has good transitions to set the pace of the scene and uses enough whitespace to avoid cluttering the page. It's a solid layout and much better than most Marvel/DC comics.

IIRC, Bill Watterson used to complain about how newspaper comics weren't allowed to use nonstandard layouts (especially including the large Sunday strips) that used to be fairly commonplace in comics from the early 20th century (such as Krazy Kat). So older comics may well have had more variety in their layouts.

It's not rage fuel or melodrama, the MC gives you mixed feelings because you don't know whether to feel sorry for how emotionally messed up he is or to find it funny; the way the manga presents it and the situations it puts him in are like that. He doesn't mope either, his momolouges are short and pretty much just him being a cold, lonely dude mildly annoyed by pretty much everyone around him. There is some drama, of course, but I'm particularly sensitive to drama and won't read anything that has too much or the wrong type, and I found this fine.

The idea of a simple grid layout is not draw attention to the panel layout and instead focus the reader's attention on the the drawings in the panel. In that particular page outside of the establishing shot the content of each panel is equally impotent and the focus is on The Joker's body and face language, so it makes sense for them all to be the same size.
