I wouldn't go that far. Really the question is whether Gainax can still put out a good original series or not. The last non-adaptation works they've done were the 2011 Pleiades and PSG in 2010. Gainax's putting out less shows than they did before Trigger split off, but not to the same degree Gonzo fell off. Plus, Gonzo's quality slumped hard (not that they were ever great to begin with) but Gainax, while historically terrible with adaptations, has actually put out good ones since Trigger left.

Interesting aside, Gonzo is a Gainax split-off as well.

Only interesting thing in the pipeline they have currently is the Honneamise movie sequel and I am not sure that can save them, since the first wasn't exactly a great seller even if it is considered a classic now.
The main problem they have is that all the good talent they had has left for other studios. It is kinda hard to come back from that if there aren't many experienced people left at the studio.
