A conductor is there to keep tempo and dynamics. It's really hard for a band to judge allego or sudden tempo changes, or even dynamic changes without a conductor.

Well I disagree with that guy. Tempo is something any good musician can do. My high school band could play perfectly in time without a conductor by listening to each other.

The conductor is there to direct subtle variations on style and articulation and phrasing. Most importantly they can adjust balance on the fly since you can't hear the whole band when you're in the band.
