There's a reason why dubs are shit, and it has nothing to do with Japanese vs English, it's just the limitations of trying to adapt a script into another language while having to match mouth movements/the amount of time used to speak. This creates tons of awkward phrases, forces inaccurate translations, and kills any opportunity for emotional acting. It doesn't help that the two languages express emotion very differently. Until dubbers start adjusting the animation of the mouth movements slightly dubs will never improve. I don't know why they don't do this because it's really not hard. I mean for fuck's sake littlekuriboh does it all the time in his shitty videos.

That said I did enjoy the PSG dub, possibly the only dub where it's comparable to the original.

Dubs always are inferior to the sub counterparts. In the original Japanese, you have handpicked seiyuus from hundreds of potentials, whereas in English dubs you have the same 5 VAs trying to change the pitch of their voice.

You can get a decent dub going with some talent (see: Miyazaki, esp. Howl's Moving Castle), but the problem of creator's intent still remains. It's almost impossible to capture the creator's heartfelt feelings without them handpicking the voice.

Not to mention certain lines sound terrible in English just based off the script, and you're really dooming yourself to failure from the start.

In many cases, the seiyuu and the character they're playing become intertwined. Would you watch someone dubbing Robert Downey Jr. in The Avengers, or would you just watch the damn subs (assuming you didn't know English)? I feel the obvious choice would be the latter.

English dubs are shit because the people hired to do anime voice acting are usually bottom of the barrel and failed to make it into radio, TV, film, etc.

Japan has a highly competitive voice acting industry with high schoolers going to voice acting classes while competing with veterans and other newbies. Furthermore, voice actors are more than just a voice for a character. They serve in radio shows and the occasional TV program.

This doesn't mean that the voice acting is perfect. Talentless idols with contracts to certain companies always get a chance to voice a character. However, despite this, Japanese voice acting is still of higher quality.

There are good English dubs, just as there are good Japanese dubs of English shows. But, there's too much shit to even believe that English dubs have a chance.

For starters, anime would have to be more popular again in America in order for companies to invest in better voice acting.

The western fanbase comes mainly from 4 continents - Yurop, NA, South America, Straya. Total population - around 1.8 billion. Only half billion come from an English speaking country, the rest are used to watching media in foreign languages with subs.
English sounds just as alien to me as Japanese does. I'd rather have my cartoons in their original state, voiced by top-tier professionals rather than bottom of the barrel failed actors.
