That is pretty obvious, you make money off of adaptations. You know how this works right? Studios don't just go "yeah we will adapt this thing that will be really good". The owner of the light novel property is generally inviting studios to bid for the contract to do the adaptation of the anime and studios can use these adaptations as a way to build funds to do their own originals. Like how Gainax always used to do 2-3 adaptations then an original.

You don't get it though, to studios the sales of adaptations are generally unimportant. They are making their money by being paid to animate the series by the people that own the manga or light novel. Quite often the studio is literally just work for hire in this situation and has no financial gain or loss through the failure or success of a show.

It is why you can see studios that constantly churn out things that sell like 1000 copies and still be fine. They are protected from the risks of failures because they don't have real financial stakes in adaptation work beyond profiting from the budget. This is also why you see a lot less original anime because there are no property owners, no light novel people or manga people to pay for the show. You are either risking breaking the bank funding it or you have to do what Trigger did for KLK and convince someone like Aniplex to fund it but that will usually only happen if the people involved are proven successful talents like Imaishi.

But if you're going to be making that distinction, these don't appear to be "animation designs", they look like the original designs for the project. It's a still image. An illustration - by the illustrator who designed the characters (Magodesu) rather than an animator. There is no reason to believe these are "animation designs" based on the first image we see from the project.
