You know, I'm rather amused by the way people who've only watched Fate/Zero would see this show. I mean, UBW is the arc with the LEAST Kotomine and Ilya; The thinking for anime-only viewers would be "Huh? Kotomine's killed off halfway through the plot?" and "Wait, that's what happens to Ilya?"

Normally, I'd be worried that they'd write around it - Like they did with the Rin's adventure episode, where she found her friend instead of her friend being sacrificed to dark gods. But this is such an integral part of the plot, they can't dodge that bullet.

UBW is interesting because it basically reverses the romance. Fate and HF have Shirou trying to help their heroine with some major trouble or problem, while UBW essentially has Rin trying to help Shirou.

I mean you can even see it in the date. In the Fate route, the date scene has Shirou trying to make Saber have fun, while UBW it's Rin trying to make Shirou happy. In the end, she's the one who makes the promise to help Shirou and protect Shirou.

They cut away from a certain fight I wanted to see, although it's shown in the opening. The Hercules/Gilgamesh fight, while animated nicely, didn't feel as impactful as I expected. But you'll totally be invested emotionally. And pacing is much better.

If Rin had more prominence in UBW's narrative, she'd completely overshadow the other heroines. You have to remember, Rin has a fuck ton of screen time throughout the entire game. Saber gets taken out of the plot for most of Heaven's Feel and a chunk of UBW, while Sakura is basically only in HF. Rin though is always around.

For years its been an understanding that UBW isn't a route about Rin, but rather Archer. Only recently have people seemingly forgotten this.

She doesn't even do shit for the last half of the route, despite people thinking she's the perfect action girl. Except try to save someone that almost raped her an episode or two back. Does a lot of nothing in the end.

The heroine in every route is the one that kills Gilgamesh. UBW was always primarily about Rin's servant upstaging her and being the real heroine as he has a homoerotic battle with his former self.
