These days (well all previous days probably too) you usually get some sort of open ending with random S2+ tease or "quick! we have to play it safe" ending or combination of both.
Yurikuma ending is the way it should be

>>
>>123297661
Bears and people are just 2 separate groups that hate each other and exist in constant conflict.

Kureha became a bear because she realized making Ginko into a human didn't solve anything and was just playing into the invisible storm. If pulling them over to your side doesn't fix anything, then cross over to their side.

Bears and people could be Capulets and Montagues, japanese and koreans, or any 2 groups of people that irrationally hate one another.

The schoolgirls were all gay as fuck, bears have nothing to do with sexual orientation.

If it was Kureha who gave up on love, why was Ginko in a court trial being told that stuff about forgetting here and her giving up on love?

Trials are so confusing, like the rest of the series when Kureha got several calls and fell rolling to the court but Ginko and Lulu were the ones to show up before the judges.

>>
>>123298602
Really? Wasn't that like +200$?
>>
>>123298361
>>123298294

So basically:

Konomi was a lesbian who hid her tendencies and became Yurizono's underling, but was exposed. Instead of being kicked out she started ratting out the other lesbains because she was a coward, and the girls let her stick around because she was useful, symbolized by them using her as a cyborg weapon. After Ginko and Kureha left she was abandoned again, but twintails ended up falling for her in the end.

How happy.
>>
>>123298731
The trial where Ginko chose to forget Kureha never happened, it was just shown to us to go along with Lulu's (incorrect guess) that that was what had happened. Also, Kureha never gave up on love, she "relinquished what was most important to her," which happened to be her love with Ginko and therefore her memories.
>>
>>123298447
Chipmunk was a human because she went to yuri court to promise her love for Yurizono.
Turns out not all love is meant to be and Yurizono was a top bitch, so she died and lost but lucky her she came back as a cyborg bear and found new love in someone with an ungodly fetish for cyborg bears who are also girls.

Yurizono was a human because she wanted to fuck everyone in the school.
>>
>>123298731
>If it was Kureha who gave up on love, why was Ginko in a court trial being told that stuff about forgetting here and her giving up on love?

That was part of the story Lulu told Kureha, it never actually happened. A lot of the flashbacks are events that particular characters think might have happened this way but there is no guarantee they actually did.
>>
>>123298749
>Geshu
>Dead

>>123298731
Ginko and Lulu were actually going to court to see if it was okay to kill whoever was the head of the Invisible Storm in the first and second episode at least. That way they could protect Kureha by murdering whoever hurt her feelings.

I kind of feel like Ikuhara does these sorts of endings because he doesn't really know how to properly end a story in a way that doesn't involve the wall between reality and fantasy breaking down. Now, in this series, the wall was never particularly strong, when he uses fantasy as a deus ex machina, it isn't particularly interesting.

I mean, Kureha knew Ginko for maybe a few months as a very young child. But the plot basically made it incumbent on her to return Ginko's love even though she really barely even knew her. Are they just going to skip merrily through the sky-world together for the rest of eternity? Is that really a good ending? What about the fact that no matter whether Sumika was really Kumaria, Ginko still let her die? I don't know about you, but even if I had some sort of childhood tryst with a girl, if I forgot about her (like most people forget about friends they had when they were 5) and found out that she stood by while the woman I currently loved was killed and did nothing, I don't see how I could ever even LOOK at her, let alone love her again.

I really want to like the ending, but it just feels wrong. It's not just because its surreal - Penguindrum and Utena were like that, but at least there, there was a sense of reasonableness. Shouma came to love Ringo and sacrificed himself for her; Kanba had his love returned, but he still had to pay for all the people he killed.
>>

The parallel was more to the scene where Kureha meets Ginko. In this case, it's Kureha's example that will continue to widen the cracks in the invisible society, as more and more girls don't back down on love and even dare to love bears.

Whoops. Forgot to add that scene to the greentext. Makes sense too. The ideas of never giving up on love constantly being passed down. Reia > Kureha > Twintails watching Kureha and Ginko

Okay, not "fantasy" then. But the fact that the characters problems all have to be worked out using bizarre symbolic imagery is basically what happens in all his stuff. I think it was more effectively done in MPD, but even there, it was overdone.

And eventually she will be. The only people who were capable of participating in the storm but not be in danger of being consumed by it were those, like Mitsuko, who knew the whole thing was a sham and used it to their own ends.

Butterfly's on borrowed time.

Really, I could imagine any of his three originals being someone's favorite since they're all very good. It's all a matter of what speaks to you personally.
>>
So is there actually no magic in anything and everything is just symbolic imagery for grounded real life problems?
I guess this applies for all his stuff.

I think most people are drawn to that aspect of his works because it's what differentiates him from other directors of TV anime and makes his shows so interesting and endearing.

Theory: is ep4 the better first episode for the show? (the lulu princess episode) I didnt REALLY love the show until then

Utena > Penguindrum > Yurikuma

All good shows.

The ending is really just this, straight from Morishima Akiko.

The first episode did an amazing job of setting the stage.
I liked it more than both Utena and Penguindrum's first episodes.
>>
>>123300510
I thought the 4th episode was the best too.
>>
Now that it's over, what would you rate YKA?

OK/10

I can't say I cared for most of the characters, but I was interested enough to keep on watching it.

4/5, I loved it.

I agree absolutely. I honestly cannot chose between the two series. Like for me Utena was just a real masterpiece that nothing else can touch, but the fact Penguindrum really struck a chord with me personally makes it impossible for me to properly compare or chose between the two series. If that makes any sense?

8/10
>>
>>123300510
Nah, I think the humorous tone of it doesn't work well until the overall tone was already established.

The rest of the show would just feel weird if it started off with that.
>>
>>123300484

The thing is, he always kicks it into overdrive at the end. I guess it depends on what you think of ambiguous endings - I tend not to like them, which is why I'm much less satisfied with how he ends things than how he sets things up.

Like, between the last two episodes of Eva and EoE, which are two different interpretations of the same events, Ikuhara always gives us the last two episodes treatment. Just once, I want him to know what the shit I'm seeing actually means.

ep 1 sets the stage, but ep 4 sets the mood.

8.5/10. I loved it and I'm sure I'll gain an even greater appreciation of it after several rewatches.

8/10

Penguindrum was a 10 though, so it feel more like a 7 by comparison.
>>
So, was this show good or bad? I've held it off since watching the first episode.
>>
>>123300633
8/10 was fun, not the best but really good.

I wouldn't say it's a better first episode, but it's my favorite episode from the series and one of my favorite episodes from any of Ikuhara's shows (along with Penguindrum episode 9 and Wakaba's duel episode)

True, it's what really gave the show its storybook vibes that carried through to the end, but I was just so fascinated with the general visual design and style of the world by the first episode I feel like it would have been a waste starting it in a different setting. Plus, starting the show with an episode focused on a side character would've hurt the pacing quite a bit.
