He has vivid encounters that he only conscious of in dreams, and even what you read is very limiting. So who else is reading Hikaru? It's a pretty good romance LN, where the mc, Koremitsu, is haunted by a ghost who was a play boy, so he has to go out and fulfill the promises the ghost has made, while at the same time causing girls to fall in love with him. Koremitsu is a great mc while the ghost is a fop foil, in which the ghost while being able to placate the girls before he died could never solve their issues, Koremitsu goes out and solves all the issues. Also the girls are cute, though temperamental at first. Pic related, the tsundere of the group, but probably the closest to mc.

I agree with your sentiment, but I think that we're supposed to react like the /a/non you were responding to. I mean, if your waifu was about to be raped and you could stop it by stabbing a bitch, wouldn't you do the same? Part of being a person is sometimes having your passions overtake your rationality, and I take Aya's unwillingness to accept this as just another aspect of her inhumanity as a "Box".

My take of things is that Kazuki actually became more human in volumes 3 and 4, and that's what led to his breakup with Aya in vol. 5. He went from a person who valued some bizarre conception of the "everyday life" to someone who valued the happiness of Maria above all else. I think that's a lot more normal. I mean, there are 1,000 stories about people who do crazy shit for love, but you don't really hear stories about people who do stuff because of their obsession for "the everyday life".

Kenkyo, Kenjitsu o Motto ni Ikite Orimasu has a very similar premise: JK MC dies and is reincarnated into a shoujo manga setting as the rich bitch antagonist, but there's only one main story love interest (where Burikko, being an Otome-game, has the four Kings), and we haven't seen the Heroine yet.

In Burikko, the MC decides to just go "fuck it, I'mma do what I want" and becomes a magic otaku and had friendship powa, while in Kenkyo the MC just decides to play everything safe, get a good education and tries to avoid the Bad End by not becoming a bitch. No romance yet, but it's still early.

The fact that he tried to play it off as a lie and manipulate her trust after the fact only made it clearer to her that Kazuki changed so much that she could no longer see him as the same person she knew for ~70 years.
