That's the thing, I strongly disagree. I hate season 1 - I think it's garbage. The start of AS is even worse. But you need all of that, the gradual build-up of their history. Shit like the little note on the blackboard. That's what makes Clannad so good when it actually gets good.

You absolutely need Fuko's arc, and Kotomi's unless you want to overlook the supernatural shit at the end. Everything to do with Tomoyo is pretty worthless though. If they didn't call it After Story, a name implying that Clannad is two separate series and not one 47 episode long superseries, most of the complaints about the first season would disappear.

I completely, 100% agree and this is exactly why Clannad left me with a sour taste in my mouth. This is a huge issue, Anonymous. Especially when the show dedicates 5 or so episodes to a character only to toss them away and make them legitimate side characters.

That doesn't change the fact that there are entire episodes that are straight up boring or end up being irreverent come AS.

But I don't even like all of AS. I like pretty much everything after it stops with the arc-based structure. So the final 2/5ths or so of the entire thing. You can certainly make a distinction, because the tone (though not the themes and purpose - those are built throughout) does change. But it's still the one story.

I think this is one of those shows that your enjoyment of it is largely due to how well you can self-insert into Okazaki, how much you can relate to the cast of high-school friends, and how much family values mean to you.
A lot of the shortcomings of the show I can easily overlook due to how well the themes and events reverberated with me. But I can understand how someone who is unable to really connect with these themes and characters would just find it boring.

I'm still not sure what people have against addressing every character in the series in a linear fashion, is what I would have said if I didn't also hate harem anime, but it fit together and didn't distract from the show's main themes. Well, my experience was different. The proposal, for instance, was a product of this intense building pressure from the living by himself and adult life and so on. I suppose Clannad's atmosphere really captured me, to the point where I could easily ignore forced anything - though I was quite aware of it.

It tries too gooddamn hard. Even Nagisa's death wasn't sad because of how predictable the series is. This is why Episode 18 of AS is incredible. It breaks that mold, takes the viewer by surprise, and tackles emotional trauma in an innocent and bittersweet manner. It was at that point where I felt like watching Clannad as a whole was worth it. Then it goes back to being it's hamfisted self episode 19+.

The point is that if you can connect with and become absorbed into the themes and characters, the aspects you think are 'hamfisted' aren't noticeable. Sure if you sit back afterwards and look at certain points, it might seem quite forced, but while actually watching the show itself, I was enjoying it too much to notice.
And that's my point; if you can't connect enough with the story and characters while actually watching the show, your enjoyment will be obstructed by elements you find 'forced', but for a lot of people with who the story deeply reverberated with, these 'forced' elements weren't an issue.

I guess at the end of the day, it's just subjectivism. But I find Clannad to be a show where subjectivism really heavily effects people's opinions due to how vastly different an experience it can be depending on your personal engagement during watching.

A lot of anime always has the bland MC that the viewer can self-insert to, and I feel that how well the individual viewer can self-insert into the MC has a lot to do with their enjoyment of the overall show.
Clannadman, while having a fair few 'bland MC' traits, is also a well-enough fleshed out character, who's proactive and has motivations. I think that if a viewer can then self-insert into him, you end up getting pulled long with his motivations and convictions to a much stronger degree than with most anime MCs.
A lot of Clannad's enjoyment comes from this, I think.
