Took me a good 10 episodes until I got use to it.
The series was still underwhelming as fuck.
Except for AS Episode 18. That was a masterpiece.
>>
Reminder that Ushio and Nagisa are probably just going to get sick and die again.

>>122984953
The first season was pretty underwhelming to me too. People made out the show to be the best love story ever told.
Clannad AS is still one of my all time favorites though. I'm fucking weak when it comes to stories about family, so my opinion is biased as fuck.
>>
Clannads a qt :3

>>
>>122985358
I dunno. I feel like the show could have been condensed into 1 season. That or they could have just made a movie based on AS episode 18. I have a lot of issues with Clannad and if it wasn't for the fact that I have yard work to do soon, I'd start listing off from that massive list.

More like worst girl, I'm glad she died.
>>
>>122985411
That's the thing, I strongly disagree. I hate season 1 - I think it's garbage. The start of AS is even worse. But you need all of that, the gradual build-up of their history. Shit like the little note on the blackboard. That's what makes Clannad so good when it actually gets good.
>>
>>122985453
But AS focuses mostly on Nagisa and Tomoya. There's all this buildup but it's for characters that get tossed aside in AS. Season 1 could have been almost completely scrapped and AS wouldn't have harmed by it.
>>
>>122985498
It juxtaposes the whole school life with this sudden almost nihilistic emptiness. The bit in episode 8 (I think) where you see all of these school friends who suddenly disappeared hit me hard. And that was before any of the actual melodrama even started.

Season 1 could definitely have been handled better, but it really needed to be there.
>>
>>122985411
My biggest gripe with the series is the way that characters were written off and became irrelevant after their arcs. This is a huge problem with Kotomi, since she still could have had a lot more to say about the illusionary world.

Also, Clannad season one fulfills its job in being a SoL/Romance and it's the reason we all cared about AS. It's borderline mediocre, but I didn't hate it.
>>
>>122985498
You absolutely need Fuko's arc, and Kotomi's unless you want to overlook the supernatural shit at the end. Everything to do with Tomoyo is pretty worthless though. If they didn't call it After Story, a name implying that Clannad is two separate series and not one 47 episode long superseries, most of the complaints about the first season would disappear.
>>
>>122985586
>My biggest gripe with the series is the way that characters were written off and became irrelevant after their arcs.
I completely, 100% agree and this is exactly why Clannad left me with a sour taste in my mouth. This is a huge issue, Anonymous. Especially when the show dedicates 5 or so episodes to a character only to toss them away and make them legitimate side characters.

>>122985580
>It juxtaposes the whole school life with this sudden almost nihilistic emptiness.
That doesn't change the fact that there are entire episodes that are straight up boring or end up being irreverent come AS.
>Season 1 could definitely have been handled better, but it really needed to be there.
Maybe it did, maybe it didn't. All I know is that I was left with the impression that AS could have stood up on it's own and with an extra 2 or 3 episodes could have made all of season 1 vanish.
>>
>>122985665
But it is. It's a continuous story. The start of AS even takes exactly the same format as S1.
>>
>>122985716
As such, it is improper to say you didn't like Clannad but you did After Story since they are all the same series. The fact that the first half of the series being noticeably worse than the second could have been due to Kyoto Animation sucking at everything but animation, but I haven't read the visual novel so I cannot be certain.
>>
>>122985834
But I don't even like all of AS. I like pretty much everything after it stops with the arc-based structure. So the final 2/5ths or so of the entire thing. You can certainly make a distinction, because the tone (though not the themes and purpose - those are built throughout) does change. But it's still the one story.
>>
>>122985933
>AS finally becomes watchable after Nagisa dies
Why is this?
>>
>>122985948
No way, the stuff with Tomoyo living by himself, the proposal etc were amazing.

But because melodrama. It's very obvious, but very effective.
>>
I think this is one of those shows that your enjoyment of it is largely due to how well you can self-insert into Okazaki, how much you can relate to the cast of high-school friends, and how much family values mean to you.
A lot of the shortcomings of the show I can easily overlook due to how well the themes and events reverberated with me. But I can understand how someone who is unable to really connect with these themes and characters would just find it boring.
>>
>>122986021
>Tomoyo living by himself
Sure it was interesting to adapt to that. Still wasn't that entertaining.
>the proposal
What, the one that felt forced?
>etc
That doesn't sound really reassuring, Anonymous.
>>
I like this thread. /a/, you have done me proud.
>>
>>122985834
Nah the first couple hours in the VN suck too. Seriously if I have to sit there and click through Sunoharas dialogue for an hour one more time
>>
>>122986049
I can 'connect with the themes' but the story is hamfisted and blatantly just doing everything it can to be a tearjerker to the point that it just falls flat.
>>
>>122985948
It stopped being arc-based before Nagisa graduated. I'm still not sure what people have against addressing every character in the series in a linear fashion, is what I would have said if I didn't also hate harem anime, but it fit together and didn't distract from the show's main themes. Can someone who has read the VN chime in on which parts were Key's doing and where KyoAni fucked up?
>>
>>122986096
Well, my experience was different. The proposal, for instance, was a product of this intense building pressure from the living by himself and adult life and so on. I suppose Clannad's atmosphere really captured me, to the point where I could easily ignore forced anything - though I was quite aware of it.
>>
>>122986137
This this this a million times this.
It tries too gooddamn hard. Even Nagisa's death wasn't sad because of how predictable the series is. This is why Episode 18 of AS is incredible. It breaks that mold, takes the viewer by surprise, and tackles emotional trauma in an innocent and bittersweet manner. It was at that point where I felt like watching Clannad as a whole was worth it. Then it goes back to being it's hamfisted self episode 19+.
>>
>>122986217
I have a feeling that somewhere someone completely missed the point but I can't figure out where or who.
>>
Maybe it's me being petty, but there were times where I even felt the love between Nagasa and Tomoya was just forced.

What, you expect me to believe these two are banging when they never shared a kiss, sleep in different beds, and still have a difficult time holding hands?
>>
>>122986462
>Nagasa
>>
>>122986488
Typo.
Nice dubz though
>>
>>122986499
You too, anon. You too.
>>
>>122986137
The point is that if you can connect with and become absorbed into the themes and characters, the aspects you think are 'hamfisted' aren't noticeable. Sure if you sit back afterwards and look at certain points, it might seem quite forced, but while actually watching the show itself, I was enjoying it too much to notice.
And that's my point; if you can't connect enough with the story and characters while actually watching the show, your enjoyment will be obstructed by elements you find 'forced', but for a lot of people with who the story deeply reverberated with, these 'forced' elements weren't an issue.

I guess at the end of the day, it's just subjectivism. But I find Clannad to be a show where subjectivism really heavily effects people's opinions due to how vastly different an experience it can be depending on your personal engagement during watching.
>>
>>122986462
I still don't get that decision, they had Ayu kiss in Kanon, why not in Clannad? Just a bit?
>>
>>122986540
This. I genuinely think Clannad is 'bad', but it is simultaneously amongst the greatest film/TV I have ever watched.
>>
>>122986462
While I didn't find the love forced, I admit that I found it weird how they showed almost no intimacy between them. Like even just one kiss would have been enough.
>>
>>122986563
Not even a peck on the cheek.
I'm not asking for fan service. I'm just asking to make their romance believable. A sexual, romantic relationship that doesn't involve a simple kiss or holding hands without blushing like crazy makes no sense to me.
>>
>>122986598
>>122986602
LEWDISTS PLS GO
>>
>>122986628
A romantic kiss between lovers isn't lewd.
>>
>>122986540
It's anime, it's all terrible. If you don't enjoy the characters, setting and basic plot, there isn't any point in watching it at all.
>>
>>122986594
Yup. The art-style is unappealing, the story predictable, the melodrama forced, and the characters clich├ęd.
And yet it's the most enjoyment I've ever experienced watching a TV series.

Although the music is objectively great.

It was, but now I don't actually mind it quite so much.
>>
>>122986768
Meh, the VN loops are fine for everyday SoL scenes. The music was outstanding when it needed to be.

the AS ed though was an abomination in the latter part. It really should have been changed, goddamn.

A lot of anime always has the bland MC that the viewer can self-insert to, and I feel that how well the individual viewer can self-insert into the MC has a lot to do with their enjoyment of the overall show.
Clannadman, while having a fair few 'bland MC' traits, is also a well-enough fleshed out character, who's proactive and has motivations. I think that if a viewer can then self-insert into him, you end up getting pulled long with his motivations and convictions to a much stronger degree than with most anime MCs.
A lot of Clannad's enjoyment comes from this, I think.

It's incurable.
