He started out brilliant, and even when you think he's turned heel, he consciously didn't rape Maria, and only goads Joseph on about it, among other assholeries, because he's preconditioned against people of higher status from being looked down as a moor all his life.

The airing threads almost always get 500 replies, so among the group that does watch it, it's talked about a fair bit. The problem is that people get put off by the wonky title, and it takes a few eps for the good part to become apparent. Galfagate didn't help any either.

It's a show that really deserves a Madoka level of critical praise, but is destined to be forgotten except for some great webms.

Joseph represents everything Galfa lacks from an honor and dignity standpoint. Galfa's the kind of guy would rather eliminate that source of shame than work to better himself. You don't have to feel guilty about screwing someone over if that person's dead.

That's why Lotte walks in on the battle later. Lotte has no honor, and doesn't care. She's the good version of Galfa. The lovable scoundrel we were all hoping Galfa would turn out to be.

The reasoning is the same. He's just more specific.

Maria as a witch can act outside of the rules of humans and therefore shouldn't interfere in human activities as her intervention is concidered an external impetus. If you leave the humans to their own devices they'll eventually be able to solve their problems on their own, but if you keep interfering they'll never get to that level.

First you have to understand that faith=power. Aside from his morals, he also has an ulterior motive to suppress wide spread worship of other deities. (Maria gets her powers by invoking pagan gods, though there might also be a genetic component to her witchery).

Manga:

The anime leave it up to the viewer to figure out what "natural order" means. There's some hints, there's a lot of references to the The Great Chain of Being, and there's this idea that there's this natural flow to the human ecosystem, part of which is war. But ultimately these philosophies are undermined by the thing I said at the beginning. Michael is a thug protecting his boss's territory. Viv calls him out on this.

This problem is also present in the Manga, but it comes across as more reasonable because Michael brings up the concept of freewill, makes a clear distinction between the doctrines of the church of the earth and the church of the heavens.

It remains to be seen how what Michael's reaction to the latest events of the anime will be. It could have a big impact on how to interpret his character.

I feel like the clearer manga explanation may come up in the finale. Seems that it'd fit best in the end, as up to now, the show has only seemed to play up the image of the all-oppressive Christianity. If they were justified before, things like Viv declaring God knows no love and that Michael is his bitch would be slightly weaker with the knowledge that the heavens actually have solid reasoning for what they do.

The problem is that we're left with the question of whether this God is actually created the world or not.

You can't take credit for freewill if you didn't create humanity, and the anime has been implying that humans created God, or at least empowered him.

I suppose God could simply be allowing free will to continue to exist, even if he didn't directly create it.

I'm guessing Michael with either snap and try to fight (probably only to be stopped by God again), or Michael will simply congratulate Maria and leave.

I'm thinking that since Maria was doing everything solo and wasn't actually a good representation of the "civilian" her actions were considered outside of the natural order.

Now that she's tried to assimilate herself as part of the world(getting a boyfriend) god might let her do what she wants. The other witches still treat humans like they're seperate, lower beings, and Maria wasn't really all that different a while ago.
